  4. 'Pietersen can forget return if Strauss is appointed'published at 09:34 British Summer Time 5 May 2015

Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott says Kevin Pietersen does not stand a "cat in hell's chance" of returning to the England team if Andrew Strauss is appointed as the new director of English cricket.

"If that is the best that Tom Harrison, the chief executive, can come up with, God help us," writes Boycott in the Daily Telegraph., external "Why? Because Alastair Cook calls him "Straussy", they opened the innings together for a long time, are best mates, shared dressing rooms.

"So Cook will be safe and captain for ever, as will some other players Strauss played alongside. He is too close to so many of the current players to take an objective view.

"And if his comments on air about Kevin Pietersen last year are anything to go by, there is not a cat in hell's chance of him returning."

  5. 'Mentally tough game'published at 09:30 British Summer Time 5 May 2015

Former England bowler Derek Pringle:, external Trott's retirement shows what a mentally tough game Test cricket is and how difficult it is to remove doubt once it is taken hold.

  6. Carver offered to gopublished at 09:28 British Summer Time 5 May 2015

Then again, according to reports elsewhere - especially in the Daily Mail, external - it seems John Carver offered to resign during a day of fraught meetings at St James Park yesterday.

Apparently Carver told owner Mike Ashley he would stand aside if the club could find a replacement, and Newcastle approached Derby manager Steve McClaren to ask him to take over with immediate effect.

McClaren turned down the offer, say the Mail, at which point Newcastle gave Carver their public backing and announced he would continue as manager.

The long and short of it? These are not happy times in the north-east.

    See.

Mind you, if you were manager of a side that had lost 12 of the last 17 games then you'd be pretty cheesed off too.

But Carver has had some good news, told that he will keep his job at Newcastle for the final three games as the club fights to avoid relegation.

It's going to be a close-run thing. The Magpies - who host West Brom on Saturday - are 15th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.

  9. Pacquiao to have surgerypublished at 09:13 British Summer Time 5 May 2015

For those doubting whether Manny Pacquiao - who lost the so-called fight of the century (yeah right) to Floyd Mayweather - really did have a shoulder injury... the news is that he did.

According to American broadcasters ESPN, external, Pacquiao is to undergo surgery on his right shoulder later this week to repair a "significant tear" in his rotator cuff.

'His rotator what?' we hear you cry. Well, obviously didn't hastily Google it but it's quite a vital part of the shoulder and, if you damage it, surgery is required.

Medics say Pacquiao will be out of action between nine months and a year - assuming the surgery and rehabilitation go well.

Bad news for Manny - but possibly good news for Amir Khan, who is hoping for a shot at Mayweather later in the year.

  10. Saving the daypublished at 09:09 British Summer Time 5 May 2015

Here's a big statement from Phil Neville.

Arsenal could challenge for the Premier League title if they sign a "world-class" goalkeeper, he reckons.

"I look at David de Gea and he has won five or six games for Manchester United with important saves," said Neville.

"If Arsenal get a keeper in, they can be a championship-winning team."

McKenzie won the IBF flyweight title on 5 October, 1988 with an 11th round knockout over Rolando Bohol, and added the WBO bantamweight title with a 12-round decision over Gaby Canizales three years later.

OK, that's a terrible headline but it's our way of saying, get a load of these shorts.

In beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Munich Open final on Sunday, Andy Murray became the first Briton to win an ATP-ranked event on clay since Buster Mottram in Palma in April 1976.

But, better still, as part of his prize, he was presented with a pair of lederhosen - and then, good sport that he is, put them on. Here's what happened next...

  19. I regret missing Premier League - Buffonpublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 5 May 2015

So then, there's a rather big Champions League game coming up tonight - Juventus hosting Real Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final.

Marid are the favourites but Juve have had a hell of a season, securing a fourth consecutive Serie A title at the weekend and facing Lazio in the Coppa Italia final as they chase a treble.

It has been extraordinary, says captain Gianluigi Buffon, in this very good article - in which the 37-year-old also talks about his regret at never playing in the Premier League.
