    Former England scrum-half Scott Bemand has been appointed head coach of the England women's team.

    Bemand, 36, turned out for Bath, Harlequins and Leicester during his playing career.

    England won the World Cup by beating Canada last August but the Rugby Football Union parted company with winning coach Gary Street in January just before the start of the Six Nations.

  4. Norwich fan reported for abusive language by TV viewer

    Football

    A Norwich City football fan was reported for "racially abusive" language by a television viewer during the play-off match at Ipswich Town.

    The Bolton viewer phoned Suffolk Police alleging that Ipswich player Tyrone Mings had been abused during the 1-1 draw at Portman Road.

    Officers scanned footage and arrested a 17-year-old during the match who admitted using non-racist but abusive language. He will not go to the final under a community resolution.

  5. Sheringham sympathy for Allardyce

    Newly appointed Stevenage manager Teddy Sheringham has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about his decision to leave his role as attacking coach at West Ham alongside manager Sam Allardyce to move to the League Two club.

    "If Sam would have asked me 3 or 4 months ago, 'Look I've got a couple of more years here and I want you to stay' then I probably would have said 'oh yeah that's fantastic I'm enjoying my time there, let's do it'," he said

    "But things have been uncertain for Sam for the last six months which has left an empty corridor for myself.

    "He is still hopeful that something will happen, it happened like that the last time he was out of contract at West Ham, and it happened to Steve Bruce at Birmingham. I don't think it's been any mystery or secret that they have been trying to look for other managers."

    Italy's Francesco Molinari leads the way on six under with one hole of his round remaining while Sweden's Robert Karlsson holds the clubhouse lead on five under.

    Kumar Sangakkara scored his second Championship century for Surrey as their Division Two match with Northants ended, as expected, in a draw.

    Persistent rain during days one and two wrecked any hopes of a positive result.

    But the visitors were keen to secure maximum bonus points and did so thanks to Sangakkara (111) and a career-best 140 off 145 balls from Jason Roy.

    BBC Radio Wales Sport's Nick Webb at Cardiff: "Glamorgan recorded their first Championship win of the season beating Essex by 89 runs despite valiant visitors' resistance on the final afternoon.

    "Ryan ten Doeschate was unbeaten on 74 but ran out of partners as Essex were bowled out for 274 just after tea.

    "There were three wickets each for Andrew Salter and Michael Hogan."

  11. Figo pulls out of Fifa presidency race

    Figo's withdrawal from the race for the Fifa presidency means there are just two candidates remaining - current president Sepp Blatter, who is bidding for a fifth term, and Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan.

    Luis Figo is dropping out of the election for president of Fifa, saying the 29 May ballot is "not a normal electoral act".

    In a statement sent to the Associated Press, the Portugal great and former Fifa world player of the year says that he refuses to go along with an election process that is designed "for the delivery of absolute power to one man" - indicating Sepp Blatter.

    Figo's announcement came hours after another candidate - Dutch soccer federation president Michael van Praag - also withdrew.

    Former England international Graham Dawe has hailed hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie as a "special player" following the 21-year-old's inclusion in the 50-man England training squad for the World Cup.

    Cowan-Dickie is one of four uncapped players in the squad, along with Exeter clubmate Henry Slade, rugby league convert Sam Burgess and Saracens forward Maro Itoje.

    "He's a special player, so let's hope he goes well," Dawe told BBC Radio Cornwall. "Being a Cornishman as well - for anybody this far west it's great news to get into the England squad."

  15. Gilbert wins Giro stage

    Belgian Philippe Gilbert of the BMC team timed a solo attack to perfection on Monte Berico to win Thursday's rain-hit 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia.

    Race leader Alberto Contador finished second three seconds adrift on the uphill finish to the 190km ride between Imola and Vicenza, with main rival Richie Porte from Team Sky a further three seconds behind.

    After earlier wins for Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta, Naomi Broady's qualification bid at the French Open is over after she was thrashed 6-1 6-1 by Australia's Anastasia Rodionova.

    Joe Denly and Sam Northeast shared an unbroken partnership of 208 at Bristol as Kent secured their first Championship victory of the summer.

    Paceman Craig Miles and Liam Norwell claimed a wicket each for Gloucestershire, who had won their two previous games, and now have a combined total of 47 for the season.

  23. England coach may not start before Ashes - Strauss

    Meanwhile, cricket director Andrew Strauss says the new England coach may not be in place before the Ashes start in July.

    Strauss is set to hold talks with Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie over succeeding Peter Moores, who was sacked in May.

    "There is a ticking clock ahead of the Ashes, but we won't rush it," Strauss told Test Match Special. "In an ideal world we'll have someone in place before that, but not if it's not the right man."

  27. Yorke interested in Sunderland job

    Former Manchester United and Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke says he would be interested in starting his managerial career at the Stadium of Light.

    Yorke, 43, who completes his coaching qualifications this year, says he would be interested in the Sunderland job if manager Dick Advocaat leaves at the end of the season.

    "I feel that one day given the chance the opportunity may come along at Sunderland it would be a team of great interest to me because I feel I've got unfinished business there, " he said, speaking to Kicca.

    More now on Raheem Sterling and Liverpool say they cancelled a planned meeting with the winger in response to his agent's comments today.

    Aidy Ward reportedly said the England forward, 20, will not sign a new deal even if offered "£900,000 a week".

    The club believe there would be no point in having a meeting when the player's representative is quoted as saying a new deal would not be signed regardless of the figure.

  38. Partick Thistle winger banned for betting

    Partick Thistle winger Steven Lawless has been handed an immediate two-match ban for breaching Scottish Football Association rules on betting.

    Lawless was found in breach of the SFA's zero-tolerance rules by betting on 513 games between December 2012 and 3 March this year, although there was no evidence to suggest he was involved in any of the games.

    The 24-year-old was handed a six-match ban in total, but four games are suspended until the end of next season.

    After Stephen Gallacher pulled out of the PGA Championship before the start of the opening round, we have news of another withdrawal at Wentworth.

    Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington's round lasted just two holes before being forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury, meaning the Irishman is a doubt for next week's Irish Open.

    Britain's Carl Froch could fight middleweight king Gennady Golovkin rather than retire, according to Froch's promoter Eddie Hearn.

    Froch was recently stripped of his WBA super-middleweight belt and was thought to be close to ending his career.

    But Hearn said the 37-year-old is tempted by the prospect of one last big-money fight at Wembley Stadium.

    Mercedes team director Niki Lauda says world champion Lewis Hamilton deserves all the money he earns from his new three-year contract which could be worth up to £27m a year.

    "They work for the money and they earn it. When you see how they drive and what they achieve, how Lewis has been driving, it is really something."

    Sangakkara has a century in his sights on 75 not out at lunch, with Jason Roy unbeaten on 42.

    The 35-year-old has won 23 trophies in 17 seasons at the Nou Camp including three Champions Leagues and eight La Liga titles.

    Ouch! Chelsea striker Eden Hazard won't be able to pick up his Football Writers' Association player of the year award tonight - and is a doubt for the final match of the season. This from the association:

    "Footballer of the Year Eden Hazard has had emergency dental surgery and will be unable to collect his award in person tonight.

    "Hazard tried to delay the surgery but had to have three wisdom teeth removed on Wednesday and is still in considerable pain.

    "Previous winner Gianfranco Zola will pay tribute to Hazard and Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck will deliver a message from the player. Hazard will almost certainly miss Chelsea's final game against Sunderland - the first Premier League game he will have missed this season."

    We now have a four-way tie at the top of the leaderboard at the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

    Spanish pair Jorge Campillo and Miguel Angel Jimenez and England's Chris Wood are all in the clubhouse on four under while Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts is also on four under with two holes of his round left to play.

    Defending champion and world number one Rory McIlroy has moved onto one under with one to play.

    Among the absentees for Hodgson are goalkeepers Ben Foster and Fraser Forster, who both have long-term knee injuries, while injuries have also ruled out Spurs defender Kyle Walker, Manchester United pair Luke Shaw and Michael Carrick and Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

    There was also no recall for in-form Manchester United winger Ashley Young, who last played for his country in 2013.

    Strikers Harry Kane (Spurs), Saido Berahino (West Brom) and Danny Ings (Burnley) were all named on Wednesday in the Under 21 squad for the European Championship.

    Britain's Brydan Klein has lost in the second round of French Open qualifying as he was beaten 6-3 6-1 by Argentina's Facundo Arguello.

    The Australia-born 25-year-old, ranked 195, has never reached the main draw at Roland Garros and struggled to find his rhythm against 139-ranked Arguello, who is a clay-court specialist and dominated throughout.

    "It was disappointing but I'm playing a player close to the top 100 who has grown up on clay courts in Argentina," Klein said.

    "I tried to mix it up but I wasn't completely feeling the ball. I just didn't find the corners or angles enough to give myself a decent chance."

    Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been awarded £188,250 in damages from Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) over phone-hacking.

    The pay-out was announced at the High Court in London after a three-week hearing in March to determine the extent of the wrongdoing at the group and what level of compensation was appropriate.

    But we have just heard that Stephen Gallacher has pulled out with a wrist injury.

    The 40-year-old Scot had hoped that a cortisone injection would ease the tendonitis that forced him to miss Wednesday's pre-tournament pro-am.

    He will be replaced in the field by 32-year-old Englishman Robert Dinwiddie.

    Gallacher, who made his Ryder Cup debut last year, had recorded two top-five finishes in the past five years at the tournament.
