    Newspaper editors and football club secretaries across the country breathe a collective sigh of relief as the Football League confirms the summer transfer window will close at 18:00 BST on 1 September.

    Fax machines (do people actually still use them??) are usually buzzing right up to 23:00 on transfer deadline day, but not this year.

    The time has been changed to allow clubs competing in next season's Champions League - Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United - to get their teams for the tournament to Uefa by their 23:00 deadline.

    Gordon Reid wins his first Grand Slam title by winning the French Open wheelchair doubles with Shingo Kunieda of Japan.

    However, Jordanne Whiley - and her Japanese partner Yui Kamiji - failed to win their sixth consecutive Grand Slam title as they were narrowly beaten in the women's final by the Dutch pair of Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot.

    Scotland manager Gordon Strachan has told his players to avoid heavy tackles in Friday's friendly against Qatar.

    Scotland prepare for next weekend's Euro 2016 qualifier with Ireland by taking on the 2022 World Cup hosts at Easter Road, and Strachan is keen to have a fully-fit squad ahead of the Group D clash.

    "They have to be sensible," he says. "But when you let players go and enjoy a game then you never know."

    The game, which kicks off at 19:45 BST, will be live on BBC Radio Scotland, with live text commentary online.

    "Lewis Hamilton set the pace as Mercedes dominated the first practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix.

    "Hamilton, in impressive form throughout, was 0.415 seconds quicker than team-mate Nico Rosberg.

    "Lotus's Romain Grosjean and Force India's Nico Hulkenberg made it a Mercedes-engined top four, ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel. The four-time world champion, third overall this year behind Hamilton and Rosberg, was 1.6secs off the pace."

    Jessica Ennis-Hill withdraws from Sunday's Birmingham Grand Prix as she bides her time before a possible World Championship bid later this year.

    Ennis-Hill, 29, made a successful return to action at the Hypo Meeting in Gotzis last weekend in her first heptathlon since winning Olympic gold at London 2012.

    "I have missed a volume of training over the past few months, since having my baby, due to problems with my Achilles and there is still a lot of work to do," she says. "So we have made the decision for me to take the usual week off post a heptathlon to recover and then to get back into solid training."

    "Blatter hates the English. He hates the FA. And he hates the British media. Blames them for everything," Dyke said.

    The first of the Champions League news conferences is under way ahead of Saturday's final between Barcelona and Juventus. Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon says it is a "very nice surprise" for the Italian team to be in the final.

    "We thought it would take two or three years to reach the Champions League final," he adds.

    "After the first five or 10 minutes we'll see the real teams - and what they've done to deserve to be in the final. Barcelona are favourites, but we have a chance."

    Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci is speaking now in the pre-Champions League final news conference, and he talks about how he disappointed his son by getting to the final.

    He explains: "When I left home this morning my son said 'Where are you going?' 'I'm going to Berlin.' 'That's tough, I wanted to go to the beach.'"

    Bonucci's team-mate Gianluigi Buffon also has some family-related concerns to deal with.

    The four-year-old filly, a 7-1 shot, is trained by former England and Southampton striker Mick Channon.

    LeBron James shot a personal best 44 points but it was not enough to prevent Cleveland from losing 108-100 to Golden State in the opening game of the NBA Finals on Thursday.

    The Warriors came back from a 14-point deficit to secure the win in overtime, although James could have won it for the Cavaliers in the last seconds of regulation time, but missed a long jumper.

    "I got to where I wanted to get, I've made them before," James said. "It's a make or miss league, and we had our chances."

    Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka beats Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 6-7 7-6 6-4 to reach the French Open final for the first time. The 30-year-old will face the winners of the other semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray which begins in the next few minutes.

    Middlesex and England one-day captain Eoin Morgan describes the current county schedule as "terrible".

    Middlesex are midway through a two-week spell of Championship and T20 cricket, with just two rest days in between.

    "The schedule at the moment is terrible and doesn't benefit anybody," Morgan tells BBC London 94.9. "It could get to a point, if it continues like this, where it becomes dangerous. Travelling and playing is a recipe for disaster."
