    This was Somerset and England keeper Craig Kieswetter after he broke his nose and damaged his eye socket and cheekbone when a ball went through his helmet grille while batting against Northants last July. Kieswetter today announced his retirement from playing.

    Somerset director of cricket Matt Maynard says:, external "This is sad news for all concerned. At his best Craig was one of, if not the most explosive 'keeper-batsman' in the game.

    "He is an extremely gifted cricketer who could win a game on his own. His record speaks for itself and the game will miss him. I would have loved to have worked with him this year but it just wasn't to be."

    "Eibar manager Gaizka Garitano resigned at the end of the season after failing to keep them up. Does that mean he'll now un-resign?!"

    Former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick says Jerry Collins "epitomised everything an All Black should be".

    "He was as tough as old boots on the field, very uncompromising but off the field he was the nicest guy you could meet," adds Fitzpatrick. "A loving man and very caring off the field. He is not someone you want to play against.

    "He epitomised everything an All Black should be and will be remembered fondly. They say in the All Black, a good man makes a great All Black and he was a very, very good man."

    Somerset says wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter has been forced to retire at the age of 27 because "of the horrific eye injury" he suffered last summer.

    This is an image of former All Black Jerry Collins playing for Barnstaple seconds against Newton Abbott in 2007. They had asked him to play after learning he was on holiday in Devon.

    Late in the game a Newton Abbott player was injured and Collins - playing several gears below his level - stood over him to see he was all right. Awaiting a stretcher the player asked for a picture with Collins and he obliged.

    Upon returning to the clubhouse Collins asked the Barnstaple team if he could wear their club socks when he played for the Barbarians against South Africa at Twickenham.

    Newly-promoted Watford are expected to confirm the appointment of former Atletico Madrid boss Quique Sanchez Flores as their new manager later on Friday.

    The Hornets had been in talks to extend the contract of Slavisa Jokanovic, who had guided the club into the Premier League.

    However, after those negotiations broke down over the Serb's salary demands, Watford moved to secure the services of Sanchez Flores. The 50-year-old Spaniard won La Liga with Real Madrid as a player in 1994-95.

    George Farr: Duncan Ferguson's goal for Everton against Villarreal ruled out for a "foul" by Marcus Bent. Would have taken the game to extra time but Everton were out and potentially lost £30-40m by missing out on Champions League group stages.

    That's more like it, George. The incidents are great, but we want you to put a compensation figure on them, too.

    Real Madrid issue a statement denying they are about to sign Paris St-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti.

    Reports, external suggest the deal for the 22-year-old is close. But Real's statement, external says: "These rumours are completely untrue."

    Former Fifa vice-president Jim Boyce is "astounded" 5m euros was paid to the Football Association of Ireland to stop legal action after a World Cup exit.

    FAI chief executive John Delaney said they believed they had a case after French striker Thierry Henry's handball beat Ireland in a play-off in 2009. Boyce has called for Fifa's executive committee to launch an investigation.

    "How anyone can authorise a payment of 5m euros (£3.6m) to stop legal proceedings is totally beyond me," says Boyce.

    Outgoing Fifa president and Olympic member Sepp Blatter will not attend an International Olympic Committee meeting in Lausanne next week.

    The 79-year-old Swiss became football's representative on the IOC in 1999, shortly after first becoming Fifa boss.

    "In April, the Fifa president informed the IOC that he would not be taking part at the meeting in Lausanne. He has not changed those plans," a Fifa spokesman says.

    The North Devon Journal remembers the day former All Black Jerry Collins turned out for Barnstaple's second XV side against Newton Abbot while on holiday in Devon in 2007.

    "Collins agreed to coach some of the club's youth players on a Friday evening and asked if he could play for one of Barnstaple's teams the next day," reports the newspaper., external

    "He ended up turning out at No 8 for the Barnstaple Development XV in a match at Newton Abbot. Mark Manley, one of his team-mates on the day, said: 'It was awesome, I was like a kid in a sweet shop. The guy is a living legend and he was calling me by my nickname for the ball - it was the best rugby day ever'."

    Jerry Collins's last match for the All Blacks was the 2007 World Cup quarter-final loss to France in Cardiff. Later that year, Collins famously turned out for Barnstaple's second XV side against Newton Abbot while on holiday in Devon.

    "New Zealand had exited the World Cup earlier than thought and he got in a lot of trouble for playing with us in that game," former Barnstaple head coach Kevin Squire tells BBC Radio 5 live.

    "He was just a fantastic guy and I was so upset to hear the news. For the guys that played that day with him is an experience they will never forget. My overriding feeling from that time was what a terrific fella he was, he was rugby nuts.

    "He was so down to earth, he gave us all advice on the game. His influence on Devon and Barnstaple rugby will never be forgotten."
