When asked how pleased he was on a scale of 1 to 10 with the business Sunderland had done in the window, he said: “That’s a difficult question. I will give you this answer: With the people we have brought in there is more competition in the squad... but we have to find the right balance in the squad.”

Advocaat added that he did not think it would be until December that his team found its potential and that it is vital they stay in touch with the teams above while the team gels.

Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat has been discussing the return of Fabio Borini to the Stadium of Light, after the Italian made a transfer-deadline day switch to the Black Cats.

“Borini is a player the fans like and he is a hard-working player," said Advocaat.

“People like that here and it is the same a little bit with Danny Graham – when he is in the team and he works hard the crowd get behind him."

“[Wayne] Rooney and [Michael] Carrick came to me and said the dressing room is flat – they told me to help me. I then go to my dressing room and discuss with my players and we discussed a lot of aspects – but not what some have written. “The fans are shouting every week 'Louis van Gaal’s army' [sings this]. They are very satisfied and the players satisfied. “Some players are coming to me to apologise about what has been said in the papers."

Claudio Ranieri confirmed all of his 14 internationals have returned injury-free and are available for selection ahead of Sunday’s game, along with Nathan Dyer, who signed from Swansea on deadline day.

Ranieri confirmed Swiss international Gokhan Inler is fit and being considered for his first Premier League start, although leaving out either Andy King or Danny Drinkwater would be harsh given the form they are in as a pair.

The impression Ranieri gave of Villa is that they are an unknown quantity with the additions to the squad throughout the summer. This is not one that jumps out of the fixture list, but it could prove a crucial three points for either side.

"I imagine the fans shout 'he cost £50m, he has to score'. No. He is 19-years-old. He has to adapt. Angel Di Maria struggled. He was 27. Also Radamel Falcao. He is 29. He is the best of his age but we must not give him too much pressure."
