The train approaching the football ground is...published at 18:08

    Football/travel

What's the last thing you expected when you go to a football match?

Granted there are quite a few different answers to that question, but how about this one - a steam train chugging down the touchline.

Well, we kid you not, it happens on a regular basis at the home of Slovakian amateur side TJ Tatran Čierny Balog.

As this story in The Mirror, external explains, the train chugs past during matches, proving an ever-so-slight distraction for both those on the pitch and in the stand. On the upside, if you're a football fan and a trainspotter, what could be be better?

Southgate praises keeper Butlandpublished at 18:00

    Lithuania v England, 19:45 BST

England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate has said keeper Jack Butland's second senior call-up is proof of the FA's development system in action.

The 22-year-old captained the youth side in their latest Euro campaign and will step out for Roy Hodgson against Lithuania on Monday night.

Southgate told the FA website, external: "He’s a real example of how the England development system has worked. I think England has been as big a part of his development as his club career has, there have been certain periods when we have almost kept things alive for him in a playing sense and been a focus for him.

"He was a terrific captain for us last year and we’re all looking forward to watching him in Lithuania."

World Rugby has said the injury numbers in this year's World Cup are not "extraordinary in any way" despite 21 withdrawals so far.

The figure was 19 for the entire 2011 tournament, however chief executive Brett Gosper said the high profile of some of the most physically intense matches - namely England v Wales and Ireland v France - has given the impression that the competition has been more brutal than usual.

At the 2007 World Cup, 37 players were forced home early through injury. Mr Gosper said: "Our early indications are that England 2015 is not tracking any differently to any other tournament in the past.

"Visually it is looking more serious because of the size of two of the games where injuries have been happening, but our monitoring is not showing the number to be extraordinary in any particular way."

Pitch (just about) perfectpublished at 17:10

    Football

Newcastle say they have no worries about the pitch at St James' Park, declaring it will be in "fantastic" condition for Sunday's Premier League clash with Norwich.

Since the Magpies' last home fixture on 26 September, the stadium has been used for three rugby union World Cup matches.

But Newcastle's deputy head groundsman Andrew Tully told the club's website: "At the end of the day it's a football pitch - not a rugby one - and we are in the process of a quick turnaround to get it ready for football again.

"The pitch hasn't gone anywhere - it's still there. You've got the rugby markings and a bit of damage from the games. But by Sunday it will be looking fantastic."
