Northern Ireland - already qualified of course - conceded a late equaliser away to Finland but the point means they finish top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group.

Michael O'Neill's men had looked like ending a triumphant campaign with a win having led for most of the match through a Craig Cathcart header, the defender's first goal for this country.

Central defender Paulus Arajuuri got Finland's equaliser in the 87th minute.

"I'm disappointed not to win the game but we're delighted to top the group and everyone in the dressing room feels exactly the same," said O'Neill. "We've certainly not got there by any good fortune."

Lewis Hamilton looks nailed-on to win a second successive Formula 1 drivers title - but, wisely, he's taking nothing for granted, at least publicly.

The Brit needs to beat Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel by nine points and his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by two in the US on 25 October to seal a third title.

"I've never felt it's ever been done and dusted. There are still a lot of points available," Hamilton said.

"I'm going to take my time and, at the next race, work as hard as ever."

And some quotes from Republic boss Martin O'Neill: "It is disappointing because beating Germany gave us a run at it.

"We maybe did not have the same energy in this match, but it was always going to be difficult with the short turnaround.

"We had a chance to score with Richard Keogh (a header, 10 minutes from time, put straight at Poland keeper  Lukasz Fabianski) But we didn't take it, it is gone and we move on."

The result means Poland qualify automatically behind Germany with the win - but a Republic of Ireland victory or draw of 2-2 or higher in Warsaw would have put the visitors through instead.

The Republic will learn their play-off opponents when the draw is made on 18 October.

The Irish reached Euro 2012 via the play-offs, Giovanni Trapattoni's side beating Estonia 5-1 over two legs.

Switching sports, and over in Poland, the Republic of Ireland fell one goal short of automatic qualification for Euro 2016 and will now have to enter the play-offs.

Grzegorz Krychowiak gave Poland an early lead with a fine strike but Jon Walters quickly equalised with a controversially awarded penalty.

In-form Robert Lewandowski powerfully headed in what proved to be the deciding goal late in the first half - parking celebrations like this.

Worse still for the Republic, skipper John O'Shea was sent off late on for a second booking.

The Irish picked up what looks like three serious injuries in the win over France.

Paul O'Connell's international career may be over after the captain was forced off with a hamstring injury.

Fly-half Johnny Sexton is also set for a scan on a groin strain, while Peter O'Mahony suffered a suspected knee injury.

In addition to the injury worries for next Sunday's quarter-final against Argentina in Cardiff, flanker Sean O'Brien could face a citing for an alleged punch on Pascal Pape.

    Not good news.

Let's talk Ireland for a few moments though because, boy, what a day Sunday was for that nation.

At the rugby World Cup, Joe Schmidt's side produced a heroic performance to beat France 24-9.

It was a crucial victory for it ensures Ireland, as group winners, set up a quarter-final against Argentina, while France - as a result of losing - must meet favourites New Zealand next ... a tough ask in anyone's book.

Victory for Ireland, though, came at a serious cost...

    Lithuania v England (19:45 BST)

So, England play tonight (19:45 BST). You might not be aware of this for two reasons - one, it's been buried under a deluge of much more exciting sport and, two, it doesn't really matter.

Roy Hodgson's men are, of course, already safely qualified for next year's Euro's in France but they can do something special this evening in Lithuania - namely make it 10 wins from 10 and complete a clean sweep.

It will be a much-changed team,Everton defender Phil Jagielka captaining England for the first time with Jack Butland, Phil Jones and Jonjo Shelvey all starting.

We will build-up to the match during the course of the day...
