    "It's a bitter blow for Steven Finn," added Cook. "He bowled really well in that warm-up game, and over the last 12 months he's made huge strides back to where we'd like him to be.

    "We'll monitor him, and hope he could be right for the second Test - but we'll have to wait and see."

    Cook also confirmed that Finn had been very much in contention to face Pakistan, after impressing with figures of four for 16 against the second string.

    "Absolutely, he was," he added. "His performance in that warm-up game was good. But after that game, he complained of a pain in his foot and obviously it's got worse."

    An in-form Johanna Konta will play her final qualifier for the WTA event in Linz against Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic at around 10:00 BST (in other words, now).

    Victory for the new British number one would make it 24 wins in 25 matches, following her second-round qualifying win against France's Julie Coin on Sunday.

    Just when Newcastle fans thought things couldn't get worse, keeper Tim Krul has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

    Krul ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during theNetherlands' 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifying win in Kazakhstan on Saturday.

    He posted on Twitter: , external "I'm devastated the scan has confirmed my biggest fear . . . My recovery and hard work starts now to fully recover."

    Southampton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has been added to the Netherlands squad for their final Euro 2016 qualifier against Czech Republic on Tuesday.

    Japan - the team that lit up the World Cup with their thrilling win over South Africa - made unwelcome history as the first team to exit the tournament having won three matches after beating the United States.

    After beating South Africa, Japan went on to add the scalps of Samoa and the US.

    But their heavy defeat by Scotland left them third in the group, and they miss out on a place in the last eight.

    Japan, who got a standing ovation after beating the US 28-18, host the competition in four years' time.

    Pakistan leg spinner Yasir Shah has limped away from practice on the eve of the first Test with a suspected back problem.

    Shah was expected to be Pakistan's major bowling threat in the series against England, which starts on Tuesday (07:00 BST).

    He is the fastest Pakistan bowler to reach 50 Test wickets.

    Lewis Hamilton may have got the headlines for Sunday's win at the Russian Grand Prix, but BBC Sport also thought Toro Rosso rookie Carlos Sainz Jr staked his claim for the gutsiest shift over the three-day race weekend.

    Following a sickening crash in practice that left him in hospital, he rallied himself to take part in the race and climb up the grid, only to have his brakes give out. Even then he tried to continue. 

    Here's Alan Jewell's assessment of how the 21-year-old, son of former world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr, aka 'El Matador', more than lived up to his father's nickname.

    "I can't really explain it. All I know is that I will need to work hard in order to bounce back. At Chelsea we have concerns both as a team and individually.

    "But Mourinho is the best coach in the world when it comes to dealing with pressure. I am an optimist, and I know I can learn a lot from tough spells."
