Wales crashed out too - beaten by South Africa in another thriller - and what a shocker of a day for Ireland.

They were crushed by an inspired Argentina - and then Daniel O'Donnell was voted off Strictly.

It doesn't get worse than that.

    Australia 35-34 Scotland

So to Scotland, who, as we all know by now, suffered the most heartbreaking of defeats at the Rugby World Cup, being beaten 35-34 by Australia with the last meaningful kick of the quarter-final clash.

It means not a single northern hemisphere side make the last four - not exactly great considering the tournament is being hosted by England and Wales.

Scotland's defeat was controversial, referee Craig Joubert calling a deliberate offside when replays seemed to indicate the ball had come off a Wallaby player.

At the final whistle Joubert ran for the tunnel to a deafening chorus of boos, Scotland's players and vast support shattered by the cruel finale.

If you can bear to relive it again, you'll find the match report here.

But for one fumbling line out (and possibly a bit of dodgy refereeing) Scotland could today be in the midst of a giant party.
