Barcelona are to appeal the red card shown to Javier Mascherano in Sunday's 3-1 victory over Eibar.

The Argentina international was sent off for dissent (and apparently used some pretty colourful language), but Barca believe the dismissal should be overturned.

"We have asked the player what happened and he says that it was no more than an act of frustration," vice-president Jordi Mestre said.

The club's director of professional sport, Albert Soler added that “there is a difference between what he really said and what it says in the referee’s report”.

Victory saw Barca move level on points with league leaders Real Madrid, who beat Celta Viga 3-1 on Saturday.

Stephen Miller is one of the veteran of the British team in Doha and will be bidding for gold later on Monday in the F32 club throw event, which gets underway shortly as the sun starts to set here.

The 35-year-old is appearing in his sixth World Championship and started his career by winning gold in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics - before some of his current team-mates, including world medallists Sophie Hahn and Maria Lyle were even born.

Miller has a form of cerebral palsy which affects his balance and co-ordination but this year has thrown the club (which looks a bit like a baseball bat but has a weight at the bottom) a distance 32.63m.

He goes into the 13-man field, which also includes fellow Briton Thomas Green, with the third longest throw this season.

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey says Jose Mourinho should apologise for some of his comments made towards officials this season.

Mourinho is appealing an FA fine for saying referees are afraid to award Chelsea penalties after the defeat by Southampton and he was sent off at half-time in the 2-1 loss to West Ham on Saturday.

“I’ve known him a long time and he wears his heart on his sleeve but sometimes you have to take a step back and think about what you are saying,” Halsey said.

“When you are criticising the ref and his integrity then we can’t do that. You have to be honest with yourself and sometimes it would be good to see Jose be honest and apologise for what he sometimes says to referees.”

Mercedes are set to hold talks with Lewis Hamilton about his first-corner incident with Nico Rosberg in Sunday's United States Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who sealed his third Formula One world title after a thrilling race in Austin, was accused of going "one step too far" and "extremely aggressive" driving by Rosberg after they almost came together on the opening lap.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff seemed to side with Rosberg, saying: "I think Nico has reason to be upset for that particular incident. It was too hard and we need to pick it up and discuss it.

"It is important that we sit down in a couple of days and discuss it - because we don't want it to escalate in to something bigger."
