The last time Crystal Palace won away at Manchester City was 1990, when current Eagles manager Alan Pardew was a player at the club.

But it took a late goal for City to win a closely-contested league meeting between the two teams this season at Selhurst Park.

And while Palace go into this match following consecutive league defeats, they have been playing the kind of football this season that might make them believe they can win at the Etihad, especially with the hosts missing some big players.

You can listen to commentary of the only capital club left in the competition on BBC Radio London 94.9 FM.

With the club's hierarchy apparently preoccupied with sifting through CVs of French coaches, one of the Aston Villa's most dependable characters, Kevin MacDonald, takes the squad to Southampton later on Wednesday.

The Scot has been caretaker manager before, and there was a brief point in history when a number of Villa fans thought he was worthy of the job full-time. He can count on the enthusiastic backing of Villa supporters for as long as he is left minding the shop.

Whether he will choose to rotate a team that seems to have been in rotation almost every week so far this season remains to be seen.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has stated he wants to repay the fans at a sold-out St Mary's by putting in a strong performance and by fielding a strong side against Villa.

Last season they suffered the low-point of their campaign in this competition, when losing in the quarter-finals to Sheffield United. This time around the club have stated their aim is to do well in the domestic cups, and that desire has only been heightened by their disappointing exit from the Europa League.

They head into the tie on a five-match unbeaten run, and they are starting to find some consistency in their performances after a difficult first month to the campaign.

Manchester United named a full strength side for their win over Ipswich in the last round of the League Cup, but with Wednesday's tie with Middlesbrough the fourth of seven games in 22 days, Louis van Gaal may take the opportunity to give some key players a rest.

Right-back Antonio Valencia will miss the game with a foot injury, while Ashley Young and James Wilson will hope to feature after injury and illness respectively.

Middlesbrough will not fear the tie though - they won at Manchester City in the FA Cup last season.

Middlesbrough head to Old Trafford in good spirits and with nothing to lose.

There will be 10,000 fans cheering them on and it will be interesting to see Aitor Karanka’s team selection. He is without Cristhian Stuani and Albert Adomah through injury while Adam Clayton and Grant Leadbitter are both one booking away from a ban.

Karanka has used the League Cup run so far to rest some of his regulars. The priority is promotion to the Premier League and, with Championship home matches against Charlton Athletic and Rotherham United coming up, he needs to get the balance right.

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal's hinted he may return to the transfer market in January to add more pace and creativity to his squad.

"I have said that we need creative, speedy players in attack. You have seen which players I have bought; I like that profile, but we need more," he said.

The former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss also says United are still a big attraction to top talent.

"I think that all the players I want do want to come. It is not a question of the players, it is a question of the clubs who are stopping them."

One addition to the news we brought you a little while ago regarding Leeds owner Massimo Cellino lodging an appeal against his Football League ban.

BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope has spoken to the League, who have informed him that Cellino has applied for ban to be stayed until end of appeal process, ie. a request to allow him to remain in charge until his appeal is decided upon.

What they have not confirmed yet is if that “stay” has been granted.

Cellino says he hopes he can stay in charge until the appeal for "the sake of the club".

Blues will stay focused - Kuszczakpublished at 17:24

Birmingham City should not see the end of their winning run as too much of a setback as far as their Championship promotion ambitions are concerned, says goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Sixth-placed Blues had won four games in a row before losing 2-0 at Hull on Saturday, but are still only one point off second place.

"We are still in good form and very focused," Kusczcak, 33, told BBC WM.

"There are many games to go and if we keep working like we are we'll be in a very good position."
