If anyone knows about making the difference in a game of rugby, it is New Zealand great Jonah Lomu. And he fears David Pocock and Michael Hooper will give Australia a critical edge at the breakdown in Saturday's World Cup final.

"If there's any team who can give New Zealand a run for their money then it's Australia because they're the only team to have beaten them this year," Lomu said.

"The difference at the moment is that New Zealand only have Richie McCaw in their back row, while Australia have Hooper and Pocock working together. Their speed into the breakdown will give the All Blacks a real headache. It will be interesting to see how they deal with that."

David Weir has pulled out of the New York Marathon on Sunday due to a stomach bug.

The wheelchair racer, who picked up the illness in the days leading up to the 5000 metres final at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha on Monday, said: "Wearing the British vest is something I do with pride, and I wanted to give it my all despite the way I had been feeling in the build-up and indeed during the race.

"I'm now going to take a bit of time off before getting another strong winter season under my belt, which will put me in the best possible position to challenge for the medals in Rio [at the Paralympics] next year."

Zafar Ansari is to miss the start of England's Performance Programme this winter as he continues his recovery from a broken thumb.

The 23-year-old all-rounder suffered the injury last month, fielding for Surrey against Lancashire, within hours of being called up for his maiden Test tour - England's trip to the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan.

National selector James Whitaker says the thumb on left-arm orthodox Ansari's bowling hand has not healed sufficiently yet for him to take his place on the batting and spin camp in the UAE as initially scheduled on 11 November.

Loic Remy wants Jose Mourinho to stay at Stamford Bridge and backed the Chelsea boss to lead the Blues to a top-four finish.

Remy told the London Evening Standard: "It's important for him to stay and we don't want to give up.

"We were champions together only last season and he is a really great manager. Of course I don't want him to leave. I think all the players don't want that.

"The spirit is good and we are not affected by the situation. We will just keep training well. I'm sure the opportunity to win games will be here sooner rather than later, but obviously it is better for us if it is sooner."

How much do you think you can make from collecting golf balls from the bottom of a lake? Couple of hundred quid? Try $15m. This is the figure that American Glenn Berger claims he has made from fishing balls out of the water at Florida courses.

Berger sells the balls at $1 a go and claims to retrieve “between 1.3 and 1.7 million golf balls per year”. That is a lot of balls. And it is quite a testimony to the standard of the average Florida golfer.

Getting to the first round of the FA Cup doesn't seem to be proving a particularly joyous experience for FC United.

The club is involved in a row with the FA, who have ordered United to play their tie against Chesterfield on a Monday.

    gImage source, Getty Images

"Monday is a working day as is the following day and Monday night football is a TV invention," say the club, among many other things in a lengthy statement on their website.

FC United are also unhappy about being ordered to charge a minimum ticket price of £10. "FC United’s usual price is £9. If the minimum adult price of £10 is applied, FC United will be issuing a £1 voucher to all adult ticket holders that they can spend on food and drink or merchandise at the ground," the statement added.

An admirable stance (even though the FA won't be having any of it) - read the full statement here., external

Former world number one Rory McIlroy believes he is close to full fitness as he seeks to end an injury-disrupted season in style by claiming a third Race to Dubai title.

McIlroy ruptured a ligament in his left ankle during a game of football with friends in July, ruling him out of the the defence of his Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational titles.

"I'm more concerned about form than fitness at this point. My fitness is totally fine," McIlroy said. "I'm pretty much back to where I need to be.

"So I'm trying to get my game back into the shape that I know that I can and I feel like I've made a few steps in the right direction."
