A final word from Mark Hughes on tomorrow's opponents.

"When you remind yourself of the playing staff Newcastle have and the quality - they have invested heavily too - you would expect them to be doing better," says Hughes.

"They are an accomplished group of players, but to be fair to Steve injuries have hampered them.

"In terms of talent, when everybody is fit, they are really strong.

"They find themselves in a position that they wouldn't have expected to have been in, but I think they have more than enough quality to move away from the where they are currently."

And that's it, all over here. Should be a good game tomorrow.

Before beating Bournemouth and Stoke in their last two outings, Stoke had lost three on the bounce.

"There were a few questions asked from outside of the group and within to be fair. But we have turned things around very quickly," says Hughes.

"e weren't prepared to have people saying that we were on the beach already. We are very much in the mix for reaching our targets, and nobody here sat the Club will be taking their feet off the gas.

"We have plenty to play for. We have big fixtures coming up - most notably Newcastle United tomorrow night. If we can win that then it will be three successive wins which could really kick us on. "

Stoke v Newcastle (Wed, 19:45 GMT)

On to coin-throwing next, a hot and slightly disturbing topic at the moment. It happened at the Britannia on Saturday during the game with Aston Villa, when a coin was allegedly hurled at Jack Butland.

"I think the referee was reporting it, I don't know if he has officially, but truth is I haven't had an update," Hughes says.

"We know something was throw in Jack's direction and the referee needed to make a note of it. Some idiot has seen that it has happened before and thought it would be funny to do it here.

"Unfortunately there are people out there who take pleasure and amusement from hurting other individuals. It's a sad state of affairs. I was the victim of it myself when I was a player - it is something that has always happened unfortunately."

    A little injury news.

Geoff Cameron, according to Hughes, came through the Aston Villa game "OK but has been a little sore since".

"We hope that will settle down in the next 24 hours," says the boss.

Meanwhile, Phil Bardsley will have a scan on his calf, but it is hoped he will feature tomorrow.

"Ryan Shawcross will miss out, although he is very, very close," adds Hughes, who also says Charlie Adam is back in training but "probably needs a bit of work".

"The dream is over for one of Brazil's highest profile sportsmen, as three-time Olympic beach volleyball medallist Emanuel Rego misses out on a place at this home Games.

"Rego - who'll be 43 in April - won gold at Athens 2004, bronze at Beijing 2008 and silver at London 2012 and Rio would have been his sixth Olympics.

"Multiple world champion Rego and partner Ricardo Santos are the third-highest Brazilian pair on the World Tour this season, but only the top two can gain Olympic selected."

Another man Stoke want to tie down for the long-term is Marko Arnautovic.

The striker has scored nine goals in 23 Premier League starts this term and has become a key man, but he is yet to sign a new, extended deal.

"That is where it is. It is difficult to get everybody in the same room at the same time," says Hughes.

"It can take a while to sort that out. After one meeting concludes it takes a while to sort another. We are in between meetings at the moment."

Which seems to indicate that, as yet, Stoke have made little progress in tying the big man down.

Newcastle remain in the relegation zone and boss Steve McClaren admits he is getting annoyed at his side's inconsistency.

"It's the most frustrating team I've worked with," says McClaren. "We were fantastic against WBA and then lost 5-1. It's one extreme to the other.

"We've talked a lot about character, fight and attitude and realising the situation we are in before it's too late.

"It's about the here and now and winning matches. We have to keep clean sheets and score goals - that hasn't been the case for us."

Very talkative is Mark Hughes today and now he's on to the possibility of keeper Jack Butland signing a new contract.

"I wouldn't be adverse to it. Jack has recently signed a long-term deal but that was prior to him being the number one," Hughes said.

"The circumstances have changed somewhat and that is why we are looking at that.

"He is one of the best goalkeepers in the country and he has shown that in the games he has played this season.

"His form hasn't plateaued at all. His manner and personality, he is very calm, makes sure that he takes everything in his stride."

Mr Mark Hughes has just arrived to air his thoughts ahead of Stoke's home game with Newcastle and airing his thoughts he is.

First up, he's talking about Steve McClaren and the job the former England boss has done at St James' Park.

"It always seems a difficult job for anybody up at Newcastle. From the outside looking in, seeing their stadium and the fan-base you would have to say that it is one of the biggest jobs in the Premier League," says Hughes.

"There always seems to be something happening up there though, and it never appears calm and settled. If they can get it settled then I am sure results will follow. It is a difficult job for Steve just as it has been for other previous managers."
