The Bluebirds are expected to confirm the signings of Junior Hoilett and Sol Bamba as well as Chamakh, in time for the opening game under Warnock at home to Bristol City, on Friday, October 14.

Pole vault world champion Shawn Barber was right to compete at the Olympic Games despite earlier testing positive for cocaine ingested during a sexual encounter, says Athletics Canada.

Barber, 22, posted an online ad seeking a casual encounter with a woman who was "drug and disease free" the night before the Canadian Olympic trials.

He won the title and set a national record, but will have to forfeit both.

His case on 5 August heard that the drug was passed on through "kissing".

That was some performance from Johanna Konta, winning 12 straight games against Chinese number one Shuai Zhang, after losing the first four.

  9. Is #ThisGirlCan campaign still working?published at 13:54 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

    Women's Sport Week

Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft is with BBC Sport today as a guest editor as part of Women's Sport Week.

"One story I have been interested in, is the This Girl Can campaign, launched by Sport England in January 2015 to encourage more females to take up sport and exercise," she told us.

"I loved it! It was such a ground-breaking campaign and something which had not been done before.

"It has had an impact. The video has been viewed 37 million times and 1.6 million women have taken up sport as a result.

"But are these women still engaged as the campaign isn't as visible now?

"Sport England told me the latest results will be out in December but they are expecting to see a further increase in female participation. They hope to see a reduction in the gap between the amount of men and women who are getting active.

"What they've learned is that the campaign is helping women manage their fear of judgement when it comes to getting active.

"It's really encouraging and I'm pleased to hear there is an increase in confidence as well as activity."

  11. Cockroft questions use of TUEspublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Five-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft has questioned the use of therapeutic use exemptions by able-bodied athletes as the debate continues around Sir Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky.

"The difference between Paralympians and able-bodied athletes is that we can get lifetime TUEs but as an athlete who doesn't use a TUE, you do think 'are they gaining anything?'

"I realise Paralympians need it for their disability but does that give them an advantage over those that don't need it?

"I can't really think of a reason why an able-bodied person would need one. I don't know if I agree with them but ask me again if I ever need one and I probably will."

Konta reaches China Open semi-finalpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Johanna Konta 6-4 6-0 Shuai Zhang

Can Zhang get back into this? I feel compelled to remind you that she led 4-0 in the first set before Konta roared into life...

At 40-15 up she seems well set to avoid a whitewash in the second at least. But an absolutely smoking Konta forehand stops that in its tracks. We go to deuce, and there's only one winner. 5-0.

So, Konta to serve for the set, and the power is too much. Game, set and match.

That match would have been double bagels if she'd played like that from the start - massively impressive from the Brit.

No Scotland targets - Strachanpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Scotland v Lithuania (Saturday, 19:45 BST)

    Chris McLaughlin
    BBC Sport Scotland at Hampden

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan says he hasn't set any targets for the upcoming World Cup qualifying double header against Lithuania and Slovakia.

He also says his squad are looking good in training but he's yet settle on his starting XI.

Scotland are favourites to beat Lithuania at Hampden tomorrow night but Strachan says recent international results across the world suggest few teams completely dominate matches.

China Open quarter-finals latestpublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Johanna Konta 6-4 4-0 Shuai Zhang

It's hard to see where Shuai Zhang is going to win a game from here, as Johanna Konta rushes into a 0-30 lead on the home favourite's serve.

I speak too soon! Zhang pulls it back. Can she cling on to the game? No, nine in a row for the Brit. I doubt this one will last much longer.

At 30-30 Zhang is doing her best to prove me wrong, neither player helped by what looks like a problem with the pressure in the balls.

But Zhang's best isn't quite enough to stop Konta's charge to the ice baths. 4-0 in this second set.

  15. 'Luck is when preparation meets opportunity'published at 13:27 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Scotland v Lithuania (Saturday, 19:45 BST)

"Luck is when preparation meets opportunity."

So says Confucius Strachan at the Scotland press conference.

But what isn't down to luck is selection, and the Scotland gaffer has been impressed by his options before Saturday's match against Lithuania.

"Some of our [team areas] are very strong. Left-back - incredible. As good as I have ever seen, the three of them training.

"I have to pick the most rounded team. I've been watching body language, selection is a bit harder."

England make 309-8published at 13:21 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

    England v Bangladesh

England have finished their innings on 309-8 over in Bangladesh, and they have stand-in captain Jos Buttler largely to thank for that, after he provided the end-of-innings fireworks with customary gusto, smashing 63 off 38.

Earlier, Ben Stokes hit a maiden limited overs international century, and debutant Ben Duckett impressed with a level-headed 60.

    Follow the Bangladesh retort here.

China Open quarter-finals latestpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Johanna Konta 6-4 2-0 Shuai Zhang

This is hard work for Shuai Zhang now. She's playing good tennis, but she's up against a player in the form of her life, and with more momentum than a runaway juggernaut.

More massive strokeplay, more Zhang scrabbling, more Konta celebrations. 1-0 in the second set and another break to the Brit.

And the service game is even more one-sided, Konta hammering down blows, Zhang powerless to resist.

'It doesn't faze us being favourites'published at 13:12 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Northern Ireland v San Marino (Saturday, 19:45 BST)

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has been talking about his side's World Cup qualifier with San Marino on Saturday, which will be the first game played in the redeveloped Northern Ireland National Stadium at Windsor Park.

"It doesn't faze us being favourites," says O'Neill. "We approach it with positivity and the stadium is also looking brilliant.

"The stadium is on a par with others but the reality is what will the atmosphere be like? It'll be fantastic."

China Open quarter-finals latestpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

    Johanna Konta 6-4 Shuai Zhang

Johanna Konta is firmly on the charge now, as not even a rather keen spectator charging through the stands to her seat can halt her momentum.

She wins her sixth straight game to claim the set, after losing the first four of the match.

Talk about a set of two halves...

    'Let's get Hampden rocking'published at 13:09 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Scotland v Lithuania (Saturday 19:45 BST)

West Brom midfielder Darren Fletcher is talking to the media to preview Scotland's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania tomorrow.

And the 32-year-old, who said it will be an "amazing honour" to make his 75th appearance for his country tomorrow, is calling on the Scottish fans to supply his teams with a "rocking" atmosphere at Hampden.

"Our fans get behind us every game and that's great," he said.

"Everyone expected us to beat Malta but it's not easy. It was a good performance and we're high on confidence."
