After last season's heartache, the Seagulls have quickly rediscovered their love for football culminating in sealing promotion to the top flight for the first time in 34 years.

It looked like the Monte Carlo Masters last-32 match would finish in quick time after multiple Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal waltzed through his first set against Britain's Kyle Edmund 6-0. However, the young Brit battled back to win the second 7-5.

Sadly for "Eds" having broken the world number seven in the final set, the Spaniard hit back to take the decider 6-3, and victory.

Essex have become the second county to announce their intention to stand against a new city-based Twenty20 competition, planned for 2020. 

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) rules need to be altered to remove the right of all 18 counties to play in the new tournament. 

Essex follow Middlesex in their refusal to support the change. 

But Durham chairman Sir Ian Botham said his county were fully committed in their support for the new tournament. 

He said: "It's financially very sensible to do it and if we prepare properly and come up with the right formula throughout the summer - just look at the success of the Big Bash in Australia and the IPL - then it's proven that the format has great benefit." 

Meanwhile, Essex chairman John Faragher said the County Championship, one-day and T20 competitions "must be protected".

Ben Smith has had a busy couple of years.

In 2015 he started the 401 project, external - to run a marathon every day for 401 days - which he completed in October, 2016.

His achievement earned him the Helen Rollason award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.

Ben will be the special guest of Darren Campbell and Mark Chapman in Radio 5 live's Get Inspired running special at 21:00 BST tonight ahead of the London Marathon on Sunday.

They will also hear from Prince Harry - about how exercise helped him through mental health issues - and be joined by Dawn Nisbet, whose photograph of her finishing a parkrun went viral on social media.

"Just your average Wednesday... what a fantastic day!"

The words of former Olympic and three-time world heptathlon champion Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill who received her damehood from none other than the Duke of Cambridge, who might well have been a bit nervous too.

Britain's Kyle Edmund has levelled his match with clay court supremo Rafael Nadal. He lost the first set 6-0 in 28 minutes but has taken it to a decider by winning the second 7-5. 

Staying with fast bowlers and New Zealand's Tim Southee is to join Middlesex for this season’s NatWest T20 Blast campaign.

The 28-year-old will link up with compatriot Brendon McCullum as Middlesex’s second overseas signing.
