Historically, there has been no tougher place for a Lions team to tour than New Zealand; just six Test wins over 113 years, with 29 defeats.

The only team to emerge with a series win from a meeting with the All Blacks was the class of 1971, led by Welshman John Dawes.

After sharing a win apiece from the first two Tests, the Lions won the third 13-3 and then just about held off a New Zealand side intent on levelling things in the fourth, drawing 14-14.

It was a tour that featured some of the icons of the game.

Second row Iain Henderson started only two of Ireland's five Six Nations matches, apparently slipping behind Devin Toner and Donnacha Ryan in coach Joe Schmidt's thinking.

But the 25-year-old's towering performance from the off in Ireland's win over England on the final weekend has reportedly won over Warren Gatland.

Second row is one of the most competitive positions in the squad with England fielding four credible candidates in Maro Itoje, Courtney Lawes, Joe Launchbury and George Kruis, Scotland's Richie and Jonny Gray and Wales' Alun Wyn Jones mentioned as a possible captain.

Two of England's less-experienced players - prop Kyle Sinckler and centre Ben Te'o - have been widely tipped to be shock inclusions with the Lions however. , external

Harlequins prop Sinckler, 24, is yet to make a Test start for England with eight appearances off the bench.

Worcester's Te'o, a former Samoa rugby league international, has the same number of caps, but only one was as a starter.

Both men are heavy-duty ball carriers. Is Gatland hoping to over-power the All Blacks on home turf?

Wales centre Jamie Roberts - a veteran of the 2009 and 2013 tours - was playing student rugby a little over a year ago.

But if reports are to be believed, then the 30-year-old will be back for a third Lions trip from midday.

Roberts - who didn't start a single match of this year's Six Nations - was a cornerstone of Lions coach Warren Gatland's most successful Wales teams.

Warren Gatland's British and Irish Lions squad announcement is due at high noon.

Who could be the highest-profile players to miss the plane?

Well, with the England squad to tour Argentina to be named on Thursday, rumours have slipped out of which of Eddie Jones' men have made the cut.

Centre Jonathan Joseph - who was joint-top try-scorer in the Six Nations - and second row Joe Launchbury - who came fourth in the player of the tournament vote - are both set to miss out.

Flankers James Haskell and Chris Robshaw, and fly-half George Ford, are also thought to be unlikely to be picked, with hooker and captain Dylan Hartley rated as unlikely.

They are firmly in the relegation mire but Middlesbrough's Adam Clayton insists his team are better than their 19th place indicates.

Boro have not won in the league since mid-December but the 28-year-old said: "If you asked the other teams 'Are Middlesbrough one of the three worst teams in the league?', I don't suppose many would say we are."

"We've played against teams and we have been in most games and have been pipped by that extra bit of quality that we need to have."

    Snooker

Staying with snooker and in case you missed it last night (I'm not doing the popular acronym) Ronnie O'Sullivan issued a statement on the infamous bully-gate.

    Here's his original news conference:

    And here's his statement:

"There has been some speculation and commentary around the answers I gave when questioned by the media at my press conference on Sunday.

"Any outstanding issues with the snooker authorities will be addressed by my legal team following the conclusion of this great event, when I hope a sensible resolution can be reached.

"I will not be making any further comment about this during the World Championship. I request the press and media respect this position in all further interviews."
