He may not be everyone's definition of a team player but Cristiano Ronaldo gave a mention for his mates after the win over Bayern, which takes them through to the semi-finals for the seventh consecutive season - the longest streak in Champions League history.

"We are just winners," Ronaldo said. "Making six goals against a team like Bayern is not easy and we deserve to move through to the semi-finals. "We played very well, obviously I am very happy to score all three goals, but the team has been great."

    Real reach semi-finalspublished at 08:32

Last night's other quarter-final was a classic encounter at the Bernabeu as holders Real Madrid saw off Bayern Munich, who had midfielder Arturo Vidal sent off in the 84th-minute, with a 4-2 win in extra-time and a 6-3 aggregate.

There was more than a hint of offside about Cristiano Ronaldo's second goal - and BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko pulls no punches in his in-depth match report - but it was another hat-trick for the fleet-footed former Manchester United and another match ball for the mantelpiece - in the unlikely event he keeps them on a mantelpiece.

That return will not happen next season, given Leicester's current league position of 12th, 27 points behind fourth place, but as BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty explains, the Foxes gave it their all - on and off the pitch - against Atletico, with dry ice dropped from the rafters of all four stands, a giant banner displaying the face of a fox rolled down behind the goal and a spectacular display of pyrotechnics and fireworks.

It's not a time for weak literary references in headlines, but a challenge from Craig Shakespeare to his Leicester squad after their elimination. "I've just said to the players that they should want more of this and they've agreed that that's what they want," the new boss said.

"All players want to play at the highest level and the Champions League is the highest level but we have to get back to winning ways in the Premier League now."

Foxes fall at quarter-final stagepublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 19 April 2017

    Football

So Leicester bowed out of the Champions League at the last eight stage. That lack of the away goal in Spain proved crucial as Saul Niguez's 26th-minute header left them with the proverbial mountain to climb.

Jamie Vardy scored at the far post just after the hour to equalise on the night but the Spaniards went through 2-1 on aggregate.
