You have to remember Tim Duckworth has been competing in combined events since February and he's dropped some points in long jump and the hurdles - but he has done superbly well.

He'll come out of the college system now and learn and learn and learn because he'll be competing in international events now.

The fifth place is actually a good achievement.

Finally GB have someone in the decathlon. Tim Duckworth has a lot to learn and that's the beauty of multi-event competitions.

But he's put together a solid decathlon at the European Championships after a long season and he can be proud.

I hope Katarina Johnson-Thompson was watching that before she takes on Nafi Thiam, because anything can happen in multi-eventing.

You just can't have a weak event at this level. That's the lesson Tim Duckworth will learn and it possibly makes it worse that it's the last one.

He's a very good high jumper and he's come fifth which is a great achievement for someone so young. But ultimately nine events is not good enough.

At the end of a mammoth season that began indoors in the American collegiate system in February that is a huge effort.

Nothing left out there by Tim Duckworth.

He collapses over the line in somewhere a shade under five minutes.

It is not going to be good enough for a medal I don't think, but it is a personal best.

Only Tim Duckworth knows what he's got in his legs. But it's an almost impossible ask. He'll have to run the race of his life. He's biding his time and will hopefully wind it in - if he's got the legs.

Great Britain's Tim Duckworth is not doing anything stupid in a febrile atmosphere.

He is running his own race, dropping back while Arthur Abele hits the front to sent the volume knob up to 11.

I suspect at five minutes (1500m personal best), Tim Duckworth's not a runner, he's more of a jogger.

But he's had a positive few days and he's shown he belongs among the European elite. He started so well but we've seen his weaker events come through at the end. He knows there's things to work on so we'll see what he can do in the future and maybe he can be around the medals.

I think he's got a big future. He's been competing since February - now it's August - so it's almost impossible to compete at the elite level for that amount of time. I think the last couple of days have really played on him and now he's really tired.

If we give him some time and let him grow into the event - he's learning a lot here - there is a lot he can improve on. But I have no doubt that if he can put a decent decathlon together he can win something big in the future.

However things end up it's been a great season for Tim Duckworth and I think there's a great future for him.

Now he can put his collegiate career behind him and properly concentrate on international events.

It's his first major international event and he hasn't made any real errors so he's done pretty well to get close to the medals.

He has to run out of his skin. He has to turn into Seb Coe. He is going to struggle to hold onto a medal position, but he has to give it a go and see what shakes out.

So what does Tim Duckworth have to do?

A lot.

His personal best is more than 30 seconds worse than the rest of the top four.

That is a points difference of 185 points.

After placing seventh in the women's shot put, Britain's Sophie McKinna spoke to BBC: "I'd have loved to have thrown 18m - that's what I was here for.

"But I'm delighted - British people don't get in the top eight for shot put at the Europeans.

"It's one of the most consistent competitions I've had in my career so I'm shocked. It puts me in a great position going forward and I've got a long way to go, I hope.

"I won't have much time off this summer - I'll go into winter training pretty much straight away and after that hopefully I can come out and catch some of these girls up."
