Britain's Eilidh Doyle speaking to BBC:

"I didn't quite get it perfect. On the last hurdle I switched off a bit but I'm in the final so I'm happy with that. I just want to go and execute my race. I will be happy if I leave the track giving it everything - whatever that means."

This is a great sign that Eilidh Doyle is returning to her best form and her best shape. She looks like she is in the right place and is giving it a go.

Britain’s Kirsten McAslan is in lane two.

McAslan is the daughter of Fiona Hargreaves who ran for Scotland at the 1986 Commonwealth Games.

    Women's 400m hurdles

    Very solid from Eilidh Doyle.

The Scot came off the final bend with a clear lead over Danish Olympic silver medalist Sara Slott Petersen and, without anyone to push her to the line, trotted home with plenty to spare.

Petersen is out of contention qualifying spot as she fades badly to fifth. Belgium's Hanne Claes is second.

Eilidh Doyle is a perennial global championships finalist, but has fallen short of the podium on the biggest stage.

Fifth, sixth, eighth, eighth are her results from Moscow 2013, Beijing 2015, Rio 2016 and London 2017.

But she struck gold at the Europeans in Zurich 2014 in the Europeans. She has Sweden's Sara Slott Petersen, who inherited her title at Amsterdam 2016, outside her.

What a day and a half it has been for Tim Duckworth.

The 22-year-old - who was born to British parents in the United States where he is still studying - finds himself top of the decathlon standings with just two events remaining.

Unfortunately they are two of his weaker events.

First up the javelin, where his personal best is nearly 15m shy of a hyped Arthur Abele in front of his home crowd.

This is the top three that Duckworth is trying to remain in:

    1. Tim Duckworth 6930 pts

    2. Ilya Shkurenyov 6860

    3. Arthur Abele 6832

The fans in the grandstands will all have sore throats tomorrow. They have been cheering for the Brits all afternoon.

On the final 50m of that 200m IM, I was convinced the noise coming from behind her would give her an extra 10% and lead her to a medal but sadly it wasn’t quite enough for Siobhan-Marie O’Connor.

'That was all heart'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 8 August 2018

Swimming: Women's 200m individual medley final

GB swimmer Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, who missed out on the medals, says: "It's disappointing but I live and learn. It's just one of those things."

Hungarian gold medallist Katinka Hosszu told BBC TV: "I can barely stand now. I haven't been able to train properly this year, so I knew coming into tonight I knew it was going to be a fight and that's what it was. That was all heart."

Gosh. That didn't pan out how we thought it would.

Katrinka Hosszu was pushed so hard throughout. Siobhan-Marie O'Connor's swim was about a second slower than it was in the semi-final which is very unusual for a swimmer of her quality.

Swimming: Women's 200m individual medley final

Katinka Hosszu, The Iron Lady, had not even been in the top three with 50m to go, but had to dig deep and just about takes the gold.

Ilaria Cusinato of Italy is eight hundredths of a second behind Hosszu, with Switzerland's Maria Ugolkova edging Siobhan-Marie O'Connor out of the medals.

Two hundredths of a second come between Siobhan-Marie O'Connor and a medal. She was first after 50m, then third at the 100m and 150 mark but just, agonisingly, misses out on a medal in fourth.

    Aimee Willmott comes seventh.

    Swimming: Men's 200m backstroke final

Gold for Evgeny Rylov of Russia, and a new European record, in the men's 200m backstroke event. But he has to sweat a bit as the officials gather round in a small room looking at the footage for any potential infringement.

They don't find anything that annoys them too much and Rylov gets the gold, Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland the silver and Matteo Restivo of Italy the bronze.

Morgan Lake is concentrating on the high jump rather than the multi-eventing these days.

The 21-year-old is having a good season as a specialist as well having picked up her first senior medal with a Commonwealth silver in Gold Coast and a personal best of 1.97m in victory at the British Championships.

She comes into this as the fifth best jumper in Europe. She, and team-mate Nikki Manson, need either a 1.92m jump or to finish in the top 12 to book a place in Friday's final.

Lake, Manson and event favourite Mariya Lasitskene are all over 1.81m.
