The Green Bay Packers will be kicking themselves tonight as there was nothing in that game, and in fact they were the better side for most of it.

There's a lot of positives for them to take out of that though, not least their young QB Jordan Love, who could well have a few more games like this to play in against Brock Purdy over the coming years.

Just two of what seem an excellent crop of young QBs set to make headlines over the next decade or so.

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy had a tough night but just managed to do enough to get San Francisco over the line in the end, but Christian McCaffrey was the man for the 49ers overall.

McCaffrey had 98 yards rushing, 30 receiving and ran in those two touchdowns in another all-action display, which was made even better by the fact Deebo Samuel wasn't there for most of the day to help him out.

They'll have to clean up a lot before next week, but as long as San Francisco have that defence and McCaffrey, they'll always feel they have a chance.

  4. 'Purdy delivered'published at 04:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

Jason Bell, former NFL cornerback, on Sky Sports: "It was the moment for Purdy, it was in his hands. What was he going to do? He delivered in this clutch moment. The offence recognised that this guy could take them on a winning drive."

  5. Defence key for 49erspublished at 04:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

Phoebe Shecter, former Buffalo Bills coach, on Sky Sports: "The defence is really what made that victory happen. Stepping up when it mattered."

  6. Full-time - Instant classicpublished at 04:22 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers will play in the NFC Championship game for the fourth time in five years in the most dramatic fashion.

They never really looked likely to progress until right at the death, when they took the lead with just over a minute left.

Jordan Love was excellent in the main but the game ended with his second interception as he desperately tried to get the Packers in field goal range late on.

So the 49ers hang on, get out of jail and somehow sneak through - and they'll host the Detroit Lions or Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week for a place in the Super Bowl.

  7. Interception!published at 04:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

Dre Greenlaw again! Jordan Love doesn't really need to pull out the desperate throw back across his body on first down with still some time left, but he tries it on the run and its picked off by Greenlaw.

And that'll be the game, the 49ers get out of jail!

  8. First downpublished at 04:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

Luke Musgrave catches a pass for a first down at the Green Bay 36, and the Packers call a timeout with 52 seconds left.

The raining is streaming down and there's a rookie Green Bay kickers on the sideline nervously waiting for his chance.

  9. A minute leftpublished at 04:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

Can Jordan Love now strike back? They need some quick yards to at least get into field goal range and they have all three timeouts remaining.

  10. touchdown

Touchdown - 49ers!published at 04:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-24 San Francisco 49ers

Christian McCaffrey puts the Niners ahead! Brock Purdy set that up with a nine-yard scramble to get inside the 10-yard line.

San Francisco take their time, and Green Bay decide not to stop the clock, and the next play McCaffrey takes the hand off and dances through tackles for a six-yard score.

  11. Two-minute warningpublished at 04:10 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

This is tense isn't it? San Francisco are in the red zone - amazingly for the first time today - and need a touchdown to take the lead.

Can Brock Purdy handle the pressure? Let's find out....

  12. Postpublished at 04:09 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

Chris Conley takes in just his fourth catch of the year, and what a time to do it as he gathers for 17 yards and a first down at the 26.

George Kittle then makes amends with a catch that he takes inside the Green Bay 20.

  13. Drop!published at 04:06 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

George Kittle drops an easy catch right in the bread basket, he's already turned his head to see where he's going but he just needed the catch for a first down. Pressure.

  14. Go time for Purdypublished at 04:05 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

Five minutes left, four points down, this is time for Brock Purdy to show us what he's got as the top NFC seeds are staring down the barrel of defeat here and they've not really looked like getting too much change out of this Packers defence all night.

  15. 'Purdy must be clinical'published at 04:04 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

Phoebe Shecter, former Buffalo Bills coach, on Sky Sports: "Purdy is going to have to be clinical in his decision making now and he’s going to have to be more accurate than we’ve seen."

  16. field goal

Field goal - No good!published at 04:02 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

Jordan Love couldn't convert on third down when the 49ers brought all kinds of pressure on him, so they run out the field goal unit for Anders Carlson to hit one from 41 yards.

But he's missed! He's just tugged it wide left and there's a big sigh of relief around Levi's Stadium although it doesn't really change too much.

    The Niners need a touchdown.

  17. What a run!published at 03:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

From the very first play, Aaron Jones gets a good couple of blocks and explodes out for a massive 53-yard run, with him gaining a few extra yards with some nifty spin moves at the end.

Quick as a flash the field has been switched and this game changed yet again, and once again it's the Packers just having all the answers. They're closing in on a huge win now.

  18. Purdy missespublished at 03:55 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy can't make the big completion next time though, with Ray-Ray McCloud going the wrong way before turning to try and take the catch on the dive, but he can't get there.

Again though that's down to facing third and long yet again for San Francisco, who should maybe lean on Christian McCaffrey and run the ball a bit more on those early downs and get more manageable third downs for Purdy to go at.

San Fran have to punt and the Packers will begin on their own 10.

  19. Postpublished at 03:52 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

Play of the day from Brock Purdy so far, as he dances about a bit before launching a high ball into a tight window that looks to be heading right into a group of Packers only for Jauan Jennings to rise and gather for a 21-yard gain.

Purdy takes a huge hit as he lets fly, and Jennings takes an even bigger one as he coms down with the catch. Great play.

  20. Run CMCpublished at 03:49 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Green Bay Packers 21-17 San Francisco 49ers

Not many running backs slice through gaps up the middle quite like Christian McCaffrey, who changes direction at such speed that at times he looks impossible to stop.

He gets 10 yards from his latest run, and with Deebo Samuel out and Brandon Aiyuk being shut down the game could rest on McCaffrey's shoulders.
