Great start by Gatlin and he opened up a sweet gap coming round the bend. He will need that in the final to put pressure on Bolt."

It was a complete contrast to his training partner Isiah Young (who failed to qualify). Gatlin took control of the race really early.

  3. Gatlin through in 20.19published at 12:52

There are no surprised to talk of here. Justin Gatlin strolls through to the next round in 20.19. He controlled the race from the get-go.

Incredibly,16-year-old Abdul Hakim Sani Brown finished second in 20.35. He might be the next Usain Bolt afterall. Third was Jamaica's Nickel Ashmeade (20.40).

  4. Gatlin in actionpublished at 12:52

Justin Gatlin does a military salute for the cameras as he waits for the start of his 200m heat. There's a 16-year-old competing against him, double world youth champion Abdul Hakim Sani Brown of Japan. He's the next Bolt apparently. They're everywhere.

  5. 'Nice and easy for Bolt'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 25 August 2015

That was very smooth. He probably shut down about 50-60m out and started coasting. It was nice and easy - I wish I could have run like that. He has a lot of confidence after winning the 100m and it will take a big effort from Gatlin to beat Bolt."

  6. 'Bolt not that smooth'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 25 August 2015

400m world record holder on BBC TV

    Quote Message

It was a good start by Bolt - better than in the 100m. Not as smooth around the curve. He probably would have hoped he had more of a gap between himself and the competitors.

  7. Men's long jumppublished at 12:48

World number one Jeff Henderson takes off about 30cm behind the board and still records 7.95m. The world leader has more in his locker, but is currently fifth overall. China's Jianan Wang leading at the moment with a 8.18m effort.

  8. Bolt wins heat in 20.28published at 12:44

Usain Bolt easily catches Rolando Palacios on his outside, is out in front coming out of the bend and has time to look up around and ease off the accelerator before the finishing line.

While Bolt looks up to the big screen, Roberto Skyers (20.29) and Yabcarlos Martinez (20.34) close the gap but the finishing line comes too soon and they must make do with second and third respectively.

  9. Bolt on the trackpublished at 12:42

The cameras are focusing on Usain Bolt which must mean the Jamaican, who is mimicking the photographers, is ready to go in the third 200m heat.

No-one really knows what the six-time Olympic champ can produce in the 200m here but, as always, he doesn't seem too concerned as he fools around by his blocks.

  10. Edwards & Lemaitre throughpublished at 12:40

Panama's Alonso Edwards (20.11), Churandy Martina (20.22) of the Netherlands and France's Christophe Lemaitre (20.29) have progressed from the second 200m heat.

In the long jump, defending champ Aleksandr Menkov is asking the crowd to clap before he takes off. They do as he says. It's a solid effort, a legal one, of 8.02m which is good enough for third so far.

Greg uses his feet perfectly. You have to control your emotions and be very focused. You can’t count out Aleksandr Menkov, he’s not been jumping great this year but he's still the world champion.

I'm looking forward to it - it's between two outstanding athletes in Greg Rutherford and Jeff Henderson. I think they're the cream of the crop. This year Greg will want to prove he can win that fourth major championship.

  13. Foul for Rutherfordpublished at 12:37

    Greg Rutherford fouls

Greg Rutherford glares down the tunnel to the sand pit. No Briton has ever won long jump gold at the World Championships.

The mechanical rake makes the pit look picture-perfect, the one-minute countdown begins...

Rutherford sets off and flies a mighty distance - but the red flag goes up and he was way over the takeoff board.

He was awfully bad. He trains alongside Justin Gatlin. He’s a bright hope. He was struggling and tying up in the straight.

  16. Day four schedulepublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 25 August 2015

We're going to need eyes here, there and everywhere for the next hour or so because not only is Greg Rutherford in action, but the men's 200m heats have also just begun.

There's already been a bit of a shock as America's Isiah Young, a training partner of Justin Gatlin who has a season's best of 19.93, dips home in sixth and fails to qualify.

The race was won by Turkey's Ramil Guliyev (20.01) and joining him as the top three qualifiers are Japan's Kenji Fujimitsu and Cuba's Reynier Mena.

    Quote Message

The most important thing is he wins a gold medal. There’s a title here that completes the set for Greg. That’s historic. If American Jeff Henderson puts a mark of 8:35m or 8:40m then that might be out of reach of Greg. It promises to be great battle. The key in the first round is to avoid a foul. I hope Greg can nail it on the board.

  18. Rutherford ready for actionpublished at 12:27

That's the 400m semi-finals done and dusted. What's next? Greg Rutherford in the long jump final, which is set to start at 12:30.

The Briton pats the British flag on the chest and blows a kiss to the cameras as he awaits to begin his possible leap into history.

Briton Anyika Onuora, who missed out on the 400m final but ran a personal best of 50.87 seconds, talking to BBC Sport:

"I gave it everything in that lane. Beijing has been incredible. I ran back-to-back PBs. I guess it makes me a proper quarter-miler. I'm looking forward to the relays - I'm sure we'll do some damage."

That was close to 48 seconds if she went all the way to the line. Alison Felix is definitely trying something different after picking it up when the Jamaicans got close. To the naked eye it looked like she went through the first 200m at 22 seconds and a bit.
