My finest memory of Syd is ripping Kepler Wessels' middle stump third ball for a duck, in front of a packed Bristol crowd and the England selectors in 1985. The stage was beautifully set for him to perform and he rose to it. Smiling all the way. RIP Syd.

    Rob, Oxford.

I met David Lawerence as an eight-year-old at the County Ground in Northampton. He was eating in the restaurant and could see I wanted his autograph. He called me in and had a 10-minute chat with me about my cricket playing and why I should follow Gloucestershire. A wonderfully kind, spirited person who gave time to others. A sad loss.

(Via my personal statistician, Steve Pittard from the Rose and Crown in Huish Episcopy)

Josh Davey has gone 60 innings without a duck, that is the longest by any current cricketer since Mike Burns went 64 innings without being dismissed for 0.

    Lancashire v Kent 21-0

Big appeal from Tom Bailey as one keeps straight to flummox Ben Compton.

Nothing doing from the umpire though - height the issue most likely.

Jaydn Denly cuts James Anderson to the boundary the following over. Steady start from Kent in this battle of Division Two's bottom pair.

DROPPED CATCH & SIXpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 22 June

    Worcs 15-0 v Surrey

Nathan Smith drops one short and home skipper Jake Libby swivels and pulls for six - just!

Matthew Fisher circles around at long leg and actually seems to take the catch but then loses his balance and as he tries to throw the ball back, ends up over balancing and steps over the rope.

Technically it's a dropped catch but...

  5. Division Two updatepublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 22 June

Liam Guthrie of Northamptonshire Steelbacks celebrates after taking the wicket of Max Holden of MiddlesexImage source, Getty Images

Two early Middlesex wickets have fallen at Northampton.

Liam Guthrie has taken both for Northants, removing opener Josh de Caires for just two and then Max Holden (16) with the visitors flailing on 24-2.

It's an emotional day in Bristol following the sad news of the death of David 'Syd' Lawrence. Gloucestershire will be hoping to add to the many tributes with a win - and they are 17-0 against Derbyshire.

Glamorgan also untroubled, 24-0 at leaders Leicestershire as first hosts third in the table.

  6. Postpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 19-0

As you would expect, the Kookaburra ball is not doing much with the small seam on a flat pitch that was only used for the T20 double header here on Friday.

Also as you would expect, Tom Kohler-Cadmore is the aggressor whilst Josh Davey is playing as the old fashioned opener he was back in the day at Middlesex, that role that has been resurrected this year.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby is getting some bounce to TKC, with still three slips desperately hoping for an early chance.

  7. Postpublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 22 June

    Notts 2-0 v Yorks

It's been a tidy start from Yorkshire's opening bowlers Jack White and Will O'Rourke on what looks to be a typically good Trent Bridge pitch.

There have been only two runs from the opening five overs, both from the bat of Haseeb Hameed. Ben Slater is yet to get off the mark.

    Walter c Orr b Abbott 6 (Essex 19-1 v Hants)

It's an innocuous delivery from Kyle Abbott that delivers the first wicket for Hampshire.

On the pads of Paul Walter and the left-hander can only guide it to Ali Orr at forward square leg.

  9. Three maidens - but no wickets yet - for Andersonpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 22 June

    Lancashire v Kent 6-0

    James AndersonImage source, Rex Features

James Anderson, skippering winless Lancashire for the next two Championship games, has given himself and Tom Bailey the opening bowling duties at Blackpool against Kent.

No real sniffs of an early breakthrough, although Anderson has bowled three overs - and all three have been maidens.

  10. Postpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 22 June

    Worcs 5-0 v Surrey

Matt Fisher strikes the pads of Gareth Roderick and implores, demands, pleads for the umpire to raise the finger - not out - as you were.

The pitch at New Road has a greenish tinge to it and Fisher is getting some swing as well.

As a nine-year old in 1988 my first cricket memories are watching the West Indies terrorise England and being in awe at their bowling - I will still argue with anyone that Ambrose is the best I have seen. Then late that summer Syd Lawrence played against Sri Lanka and I remember thinking we had a bowler who could bowl like the West Indies. The only difference seemed to be he smiled while doing it! Sad loss.

    Rob from Warwick

As a 12-year-old just getting into cricket at the time, the 1991 WI series is the first one of which I have super sharp memories. I can still recall my disbelief at the pace with which Big Syd delivered the ball, and all with such evident joy in being able to play for his country. Lovely to learn that he was a great man as well as a splendid cricketer, and someone who clearly inspired such affection in his colleagues and friends. I hope the many joyful memories sustain those who loved him as they mourn his loss.

    Kirsty, Cardiff.

  12. Postpublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset 8-0

Ethan Bamber and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, the two main seamers in this side, open up in front of a scarily sparse crowd, almost as if England's second city has forgotten the Championship returns for two rounds today.

A couple of early shouts for lbw against Tom Kohler-Cadmore, then him trying to get down the wicket to the pitch, but being beaten, has the home side particularly excited.

A good breakthrough for the home side.

Tom Haines is dished up a wide one by Ben Raine but gets an inside edge and drags the ball back onto his stumps.

  15. Bethell in for bowling Bearspublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 22 June

    Warwickshire v Somerset (11:00 BST)

    Harry Everett
    BBC Sport from Edgbaston

Warwickshire are back in action at Edgbaston, now with the red kookaburra ball, after their one-wicket win over local rivals Worcestershire in the Blast Friday evening.

England southpaw Jacob Bethell did not play vs the white ball then, but is permitted to play here the next four days, providing none of the Test top six (or Bashir arguably with no other specific spinner in the squad) need a concussion sub before the conclusion at Headingley.

Jake Lintott is not in the squad after helping Sam Hain over the line from a lowly number 11 Friday evening. Bethell could supply a left-arm spin option but whilst Taz Ali is in the squad, Warwickshire have gone for another two match signing option, this one specifically for the Kookaburra ball in the form of Western Australian off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli.

Rocchiccioli has taken 114 wickets in 34 first-class games and finished the last Sheffield Shield season as the third highest wicket-taker with 38.

Somerset have their skipper Lewis Gregory missing this week on paternity duty with his wife expecting. Expect Tom Kohler-Cadmore to come in and be the aggressive opener again that he attempted to be alongside Andy Umeed much of last season.

  17. Contrasting fortunes at Trent Bridgepublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 22 June

    Notts v Yorkshire (11:00 BST)

Division One leaders Nottinghamshire welcome Jonny Bairstow's Yorkshire to Trent Bridge having had vastly different starts to the County Championship season.

Notts lead the way with four wins and just one defeat from their seven outings, while Yorkshire have struggled following promotion from Division Two, winning just once and losing four of their seven matches.

Ishan Kishan makes his Nottinghamshire bow having signed earlier this month, but Yorkshire are without overseas signing Abdullah Shafique due to a visa delay.

It was a comfortable 163-run victory for Notts when the sides met at Headingley last month as seam duo Dillon Pennington and Mohammad Abbas took 14 wickets between them.

  18. Can Anderson lead Lancashire to first win?published at 11:00 British Summer Time 22 June

    Lancashire v Kent (11:00 BST)

James Anderson in action, bowling for LancashireImage source, Getty Images

There are not many boxes James Anderson has not ticked during his illustrious career - but captaining Lancashire in a County Championship game is among them.

Not for much longer, however - that item will be checked off in just a few minutes when he leads the Red Rose out for their Division Two basement battle with Kent.

With Marcus Harris back in Australia, awaiting the birth of his second child, Lancs have turned to Anderson in the hope he can help end their winless start to the season.

Elsewhere, Division Two's top two are protecting unbeaten records - leaders Leicestershire host third-placed Glamorgan and second-placed Derbyshire visit Gloucestershire, who are fourth.

Northamptonshire entertain Middlesex in the other second-tier match on the menu.

  19. Cook returns for Essex; Verma debut for Hantspublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 22 June

    Essex v Hampshire (11:00 BST)

    Sam CookImage source, Getty Images

Both Essex and Hampshire come into this game seeking a win that would catapult them up the Division One table, having struggled for consistency in the red-ball format.

Hosts Essex are winless in their past four Championship outings, while Hampshire have tasted victory only once in their past six, losing two of their past three.

Sam Cook will lead the Essex attack having made his England debut earlier this summer, but they are without fellow seamer Jamie Porter who has a minor calf strain.

Mackenzie Jones, 20, has been in ODI and T20 action for Scotland in recent weeks and makes his debut at county level.

For Hampshire, Indian batter Tilak Verma makes his debut.

  20. Surrey starting to tickpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 22 June

    Worcestershire v Surrey (11:00 BST)

Surrey captain Rory BurnsImage source, Rex Features

Unbeaten and tucked in nicely in second place, things seem to be chugging along nicely for the champions Surrey as they look to become the first side to win the title four years in a row in the modern age.

But wins have been hard to come by for Rory Burns' side with five draws in their seven matches so far and they are yet to win away from the Oval.

Dan Lawrence returns from injury for the game at New Road while Mitchell Santner has extended his contract to make himself available for red-ball cricket.

That all sounds rather daunting for a Worcestershire outfit who survived comfortably last season despite being tipped for the drop.

This season is a different story as they sit bottom of the table, 16 points adrift of safety albeit they are unbeaten in their past two championship games including 225-run hammering of Essex.
