Dull cricket with the Kookaburra ball? Not a bit of it!

Rory Burns' big hundred put County Championship leaders Surrey in a strong position at Trent Bridge, despite four wickets for Nottinghamshire's 16-year-old spinner Farhan Ahmed.

There were also tons at Taunton, for Somerset's Tom Abell against Durham, and at Old Trafford, where Fletcha Middleton top-scored for Hampshire against Lancashire.

But the ball held sway at Chelmsford, with Jamie Porter's five-wicket haul for Essex against Worcestershire and at Edgbaston, where struggling Kent were rolled over for 156 by Warwickshire.

In Division Two, England outcast Jonny Bairstow shone for Yorkshire with an unbeaten hundred against Middlesex, while Sussex's Dan Hughes also reached three figures against Derbyshire.

And the most bizarre story of the day unfolded at Bristol, where concerns about player safety prompted the umpires to declare the pitch unfit and abandon the match between Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire.

    Glamorgan 114-2 v Leics 251

Rehan Ahmed sends down the final over of the day and Glamorgan will feel fairly happy with the state of play, trailing Leicestershire by 139 with eight wickets still intact.

The Foxes might have picked up a wicket just before the close, with Colin Ingram sweeping in the vicinity of backward square leg, but the left-hander survives to finish on 63, with Kiran Carlson 42 not out at the other end.

    Glamorgan 109-2 v Leics 251

Glamorgan v Leicestershire is the only match still ongoing as the clock moves towards 7pm.

Colin Ingram (60) and Kiran Carlson (40) look pretty well set and they have two overs to negotiate before the close.

They're still playing at Cardiff, where veteran Glamorgan batter Colin Ingram has just completed his fourth half-century of the season.

The 39-year-old pulls Ian Holland to long leg for four to get there and his partnership with Kiran Carlson has pulled the Glamorgan innings around after losing both openers cheaply.

  7. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks 207-3 v Kent 156

    No, he can't.

It is hard to see how today could have gone much worse for relegation-threatened Kent.

They were bowled out for 156 before tea, with only Ben Compton (70) and Joey Evison (28) reaching double figures.

Warwickshire then dominated the new ball, but only Will Rhodes (82*) has managed to reach a half-century so far. The end the day with a lead of 51.

One over to go at Edgbaston.

Matt Parkinson to bowl it. Can he pilfer a late wicket?

  9. Glos will assist expected ECB investigationpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 29 August

    Glos 125 v Northants 116-2 - match abandoned

Gloucestershire have released a club statement in the last few moments after their home game with Northants was abandoned because the pitch was deemed to be dangerous by the umpires.

They said: "Whilst we acknowledge that this is not something anyone would have wanted to happen, we need to see, understand and discuss the match referee’s report before making further comment on the decision.

"We expect there will be an ECB investigation and we will of course assist them at all stages of that investigation."

    Warks 201-3 v Kent 156

Having watched Matt Parkinson get some spin, Jack Leaning decides he fancies a go.

Not a great deal of spin for the offie, but Leaning does get a few "ooos" with an arm ball that beats the bat.

It is a maiden, a scruffy one, but the Warwickshire run rate is now sub-four runs an over. It has been a much better defensive session for Kent.

  11. 200 runs

200 up for Warwickshirepublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks 200-3 v Kent 156

Alfie Ogborne gets a yorker wrong with the final ball of the over and Will Rhodes slices it away for four.

Five overs to go at Edgbaston.

  12. Postpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks 191-3 v Kent 156

Matt Parkinson is making this a nervy end to the day for Will Rhodes and new batter Jacob Bethell.

The leg spinner is getting the ball to turn sharply out of the footholds.

Although oddly he doesn't have men around the bat.

  13. Close of playpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 330-9

Liam Dawson faces the last over of the day and makes sure he keeps Mohammad Abbas off strike.

Then from the fifth ball, he clubs Luke Wells for six over long-on and then crashes the final ball through the offside for four.

Dawson ends the day on 46 not out, a very useful knock after Fletcha Middleton and Nick Gubbins had put on 151 earlier for the second wicket with Middleton hitting 109 and Gubbins 75.

An interesting day's play at Old Trafford.

  14. wicket

WICKET Hain b Ogborne 32published at 18:16 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks 190-3 v Kent 156

Sam Hain has been stepping down the pitch to meet the ball further up the pitch, but it has been his downfall.

Alfie Ogborne has done him for pace and a little inside edge rattles into the stumps. That ends an 94 run stand.

Kent will be happier with this final session, in particular the way they have held the rate much better.

Seven overs still to come tonight, another wicket or two and they won't feel quite as far out of this match.

  15. wicket

WICKET Turner lbw b Wells 0published at 18:12 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 317-9

Liam Dawson is carefully shielding John Turner from the strike as he turns down a couple of runs.

He takes a single off the fourth ball of Luke Wells' over, leaving Turner two balls to survive.

The Hampshire number 10 is incapable, as he is trapped LBW on the back foot by Wells on the first of those, turning it past the bat.

  16. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex 50-1 v Worcs 266

Jamie Porter celebrates with his team-matesImage source, Rex Features

When Jamie Porter had the top-order 10-4, Worcestershire would have been fearing the worst.

But despite grabbing 5-52 (pictured celebrating above), the visitors rallied and even got to a batting point.

Captain Brett D'Oliveira led the rearguard with 68, with Ethan Brookes (46), Tom Taylor (62*) and Amar Virdi (42) also heavily contributing.

Dean Elgar and Robin Das batted out 18.3 overs with little trouble, but with the last ball of the day, Taylor pinned Elgar lbw for 29.

  17. wicket

WICKET Abbott lbw b Balderson 0published at 18:07 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 314-8

Two wickets in the over for George Balderson.

South Africa bowler Kyle Abbott is not known for his batting and he goes for a duck.

    Absolutely plumb in front.

A fourth wicket with the new ball for Lancashire.

  18. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 372-5 v Middx

George Hill takes a single from the final over of the day, delivered by Leus du Plooy and then Jonny Bairstow plays out the last two balls to round off an excellent day for the home side.

Bairstow, who reaches stumps unbeaten on 107 and Hill, who has 58 to his name, have shared a partnership of 130 so far - and that leaves Yorkshire very much in the driving seat going into day two.

  19. wicket

WICKET Fuller c Hurst b Balderson 23published at 18:06 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 312-7

There are no more lives left for James Fuller.

The dangerous lower-order batter steers one into the hands of the wicketkeeper and George Baldrson has his man.

  20. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 339-5

The end of day one where it has been a fascinating mix of experience and callow youth.

Rory Burns' experience saw the Surrey captain make 161 after deciding to bat first and put his team in a wonderful position at 308-2.

But three wickets in a short burst from Farhan Ahmed, Notts' 16-year-old off-spinner on debut has pulled the day back.

He will have a chance to claim a maiden five-for tomorrow, while Surrey will aim to push on well past 400.
