Summary

  1. Postpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 324-5 v Middx

Middlesex delayed for a couple of overs before accepting the offer of a new ball, but they have now done so and skipper Toby Roland-Jones is sharing it with Tom Helm.

So far, no joy for the experienced seam duo as they attempt to prise out Jonny Bairstow, whose partnership with George Hill has now grown to 82.

Hill has just clobbered Helm to the fence to reach 43, while Bairstow has 78 to his name.

  2. 50 runs

50 partnership between Hain and Rhodespublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks 147-2 v Kent 156

Hold your horses as we're going to have a few milestones at Edgbaston in quick succession.

First up...a controlled outside edge and then a clip off the pads in successive balls take the third wicket partnership past 50.

Will Rhodes is on 44, Hain on 18 - neither have given a sniff of a wicket.

  3. wicket

WICKET Burns c James b Ahmed 161published at 17:21 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 308-3

There will be no back-to-back double hundreds for Rory Burns.

The Surrey skipper tries to go big again off Farhan Ahmed but he gets it too high on the bat and it is well caught high up by Lyndon James back towards long-on.

A second victim for Ahmed, but Burns' total for his last two innings is a mightily impressive 388 runs.

  4. 50 runs

50 for Will Jackspublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 307-2

Will Jacks reaches his 50 in the only way he knows - by launching Farhan Ahmed for six.

His half-century comes up off 64 balls.

  5. wicket

WICKET Brown c Wells b Aspinwall 40published at 17:16 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 261-5

The new ball only needs eight balls to work for Lancashire.

Ben Brown goes to pull Tom Aspinwall, but he can't clear the tall figure of Luke Wells at midwicket.

Possibly a slightly lazy shot as it was more steered rather than forced and Brown takes an age to walk off.

He had done a lot of hard work to get to 40.

  6. Postpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex 15-0 v Worcs 266

A really good over from Tom Taylor.

He beats Dean Elgar with a snorter, which barely misses the stump.

And then to end of the over, Taylor squares up Elgar and finds his edge. There was a worried spin around from the South African but it doesn't carry to second slip.

Things happen with new Kookaburra balls.

  7. 100 runs

100 partnershippublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 301-2

A beautiful shot off the back foot from Will Jacks gets him four runs with two deep offside fielders both beaten.

That is Surrey's 300 and a second batting point.

Jacks then adds a quick single to bring up the 100 partnership between him and Rory Burns.

Jacks has 45 and is looking threatening.

  8. 50 runs

50 for James Rewpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 338-6 v Durham

Lovely shot from James Rew, clipping Ben Raine through the leg side for four, takes him to his fourth half-century of the summer.

The left-hander gets there from 71 balls and becomes the third Somerset player (so far) to pass 50 in this innings.

  9. Players still off the pitch in Bristolpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 29 August

    Glos 125 v Northants 116-2

The pitch has currently been deemed to dangerous to play on, we gather from our BBC Radio Bristol commentary team.

There were a few deliveries that started to spit up off the ground with Rob Keogh in particular reeling away from one, dropping his bat in the process.

Officials are going to have to make a decision one way or the other about whether the pitch is safe.

It feels quite an odd situation and many people inside the ground are wondering what happens now - will we get a resumption today, tomorrow, or is that it for this match?

  10. new ball

New ballpublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 259-4

We have a new ball at Old Trafford, too.

Tom Bailey will get to use it first and Lancashire will hope that they can find something with it in this last hour of play.

Daniel Hogg has just taken the wicket of debutant Archie Vaughan in the second over after the new ball was introduced.

He got his England U19 colleague LBW for 30, after he'd put on 68 for the sixth wicket with James Rew, who has 42.

It was the first wicket to fall since tea. The two wickets to fall before the break came in consecutive overs from left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson, who claimed Tom Abell for 124 and Tom Banton for 73.

Both were caught at first slip by Durham skipper Scott Borthwick. Their partnership of 185 was Somerset's highest fourth wicket stand against Durham.

Can Durham now take further advantage of this new Kookaburra ball, to see off the rest of the Somerset tail, before it softens and brings more hefty partnerships?

  12. Postpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 290-2

A new ball also flies off the bat that bit harder and Rory Burns hits successive boundaries off Brett Hutton.

Burns then gets a couple more through the offside.

10 off the over and the Surrey skipper now has 160.

  13. Postpublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex 8-0 v Worcs 266

Jamie Porter walks off with the match ball after taking five wicketsImage source, Rex Features

A largely tight pair of opening overs from Joe Leach and Tom Taylor.

But can either of them impart a similarly destructive opening spell as Jamie Porter?

The Essex fast bowler (pictured above) ended up with 5-52.

  14. new ball

New ballpublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 280-2

Brett Hutton has removed his cap and he has a new ball in his hand.

Notts' bowling has been unthreatening for large periods this afternoon and they will be delighted to have a new Kookaburra to try to grab a couple of late wickets.

  15. 150 runs

150 for Rory Burnspublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 280-2

Rory Burns knocks one up to long on and the single sees him reach 150.

He now has 377 runs in his last two innings and he's still going strong.

This has come off 258 balls and is putting Surrey into a wonderful position.

  16. Play suspended at Bristolpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 29 August

    Glos 125 v Northants 116-2

We have an interesting stoppage at Bristol.

When I saw play suspended I thought it was our first rain delay of the day, but it transpires the umpires have called for a delay because they are worried about the state of the pitch.

Umpires and ground staff are out inspecting the track and the commentary team are busy leafing through the rulebook to see what happens in cases such as this.

Current options seems to be moving the game to another strip on the same ground, moving it to another ground, or abandoning the match for safety reasons.

  17. wicket

WICKET: Vaughan lbw b Hogg 30published at 17:00 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 328-6 v Durham

The new ball does indeed bring dividends for Durham as Archie Vaughan's maiden County Championship innings comes to an end for a well-made 30.

It's fellow teenager Daniel Hogg who does the trick with a ball pitched on middle and leg and Vaughan, trying to turn it through midwicket, is struck on the pads.

Kasey Aldridge replaces Vaughan in the middle.

  19. Batting pointpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 250-4

Ben Brown grabs a single off Tom Hartley and that sees Hampshire pick up their first batting point.

He has 36 and has been joined at the crease by Liam Dawson.

  20. new ball

New ballpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 326-5 v Durham

Not for the first time today, Durham find themselves in need of a wicket-breaking delivery as James Rew and Archie Vaughan take their partnership to 66.

The visitors have the new ball at their disposal now, though, so Ben Raine and Daniel Hogg are back in tandem and running in to try and achieve the breakthrough.
