Summary

  1. Glos v Northants abandonedpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 29 August

The umpires have decided that the game will be abandoned due to a "forseeable risk to the batters" and in the opinion of the officials it would be "unreasonable to continue".

Basically saying the pitch is too dangerous to play on - extraordinary.

We can expect to hear plenty more about this.

There is a huge feeling of disappointment within the ground.

There will be a sanctions to come - possibly a points deduction for Glos - when an investigation is carried out by the cricket regulator.

Northants will take 11 points from the match and Glos will not take any points.

  2. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 395-6 v Durham

James Rew will come back in the morning just 11 short of a hundred, with Somerset firmly on top after day one.

Rew slapped a long hop from Brydon Carse to the boundary in the final over of the day to reach 89, with Kasey Aldridge alongside him on 12.

Tom Abell's 124 and that knock of 73 by Tom Banton have also more than justified Somerset's decision to bat after winning the toss.

  3. Ahmed finishes his day's workpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 335-5

Farhan Ahmed gets a generous round of applause as he rounds his 28th and final over of his first day of Championship cricket.

He has figures of 4-69, which is a superb effort from the 16-year-old.

  4. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 308-6

George Balderson is left to rue this one as he gets an edge from James Fuller.

It flies low and fast towards captain Keaton Jennings, who is in a very forward slip position and he cannot hang on.

  5. 100 runs

100 for Jonny Bairstowpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 365-5 v Middx

What a message for Jonny Bairstow to deliver to the England selectors!

Dropped after the winter tour of India, Bairstow has just completed a majestic hundred, punching Luke Hollman through the covers for four to prompt roars of applause from the Headingley crowd.

The 34-year-old's hundred comes up from 122 balls and this stand with George Hill has put Yorkshire in command of this vital promotion clash.

  6. Postpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 332-5

Sai Sudharsan and Jordan Clark are in safety mode as Surrey play out the last few overs.

That burst from Farhan Ahmed has really changed the complexion of the day.

But that is beautiful from Sudharsan as he sends Ahmed's latest ball away for four.

  7. Postpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex 42-0 v Worcs 266

Dean Elgar and Robin Das aren't rushing themselves but aren't unafraid to unleash the odd luxury cut or drive.

They've seen no need to go out aggressively, they've simply seen off the new ball and set a platform for the rest of the innings.

Six overs left in the day at Chelmsford. If they are still no wickets down, you'd fancy to see plenty of smiles on Essex faces at close.

  8. Second point for Hantspublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 301-6

A cracking shot from James Fuller gets him four through the covers off George Balderson.

The runs tick the scoreboard past 300 and a second batting point for Hampshire.

Fuller and Liam Dawson have scored quickly since they came together, adding 38 already.

  9. Postpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 370-6 v Durham

James Rew has batted with assurance this afternoon and Somerset would love him to be at the crease when day two gets under way.

With Durham rattling through their overs, we have just four more scheduled for tonight - so there might even be a bonus over or two.

Rew is 77 not out, with Kasey Aldridge keeping him company on six and Somerset in a very strong position.

  10. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 290-6

Tom Aspinwall's full toss almost gets him a wicket.

James Fuller hits it aerially towards a wide mid-on where a diving George Balderson just fails to take a one-handed catch.

That would have been spectacular, but it goes down as a drop.

  11. Umpires and referee discussing Bristol pitchpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 29 August

    Glos 125 v Northants 116-2 - play suspended

An update of sorts from Bristol.

Gloucestershire have just posted on social media: "We are currently awaiting the outcome of conversations between the umpires and the match referee.

"We will update you as soon as possible."

The players have been off for about 40 minutes or so now and it's hard to see play resuming tonight.

Fingers crossed the match will continue at some point - safety permitting of course.

  12. Postpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex 29-0 v Worcs 266

This is Amar Virdi's second match for Worcestershire, but he's finally getting his first bowl.

He is bowling from the Simon Harmer End, more officially known as the Sir Alastair Cook End.

The Surrey loanee begins with a couple of testing deliveries.

  13. 50 runs

50 for George Hillpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 336-5 v Middx

George Hill (Yorkshire)Image source, Rex Features

George Hill becomes the third Yorkshire batter to pass 50 today and he gets there in style, unleashing a straight drive for four off Tom Helm and then pulling another boundary later in the over.

Hill and Jonny Bairstow have swung this very much back in the home side's favour during the evening session.

  14. wicket

WICKET Jacks c James b Ahmed 59published at 17:35 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 317-5

    Four for Farhan Ahmed!

Will Jacks hits him for six but Ahmed is not fazed. He tosses the next ball up, inviting Jacks to try again.

The batter takes up the challenge - six or out?

And it is brilliantly caught right on the rope by Lyndon James as he is only inches in front of the boundary.

    Can the 16-year-old grab a five-fer?

  15. Postpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks 159-2 v Kent 156

And to end this speed run of Warwickshire achievements...they have a first-innings lead.

Possibly the least expected of the trio, based on how low the bar was set by Kent.

They will be expecting to drive up a humungous lead from this position, and hope to only bat once.

  16. Hat-trick ballpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 311-4

Will Jacks comfortably sees off Farhan Ahmed's hat-trick ball.

Still, Ahmed is doing more than anyone to drag something out of the day for Notts.

  17. 50 runs

50 for Will Rhodespublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks 154-2 v Kent 156

Next up on Edgbaston's milestone corner...

Will Rhodes reaches fifty for the 37th time in first-class cricket.

Rhodes has paced the innings based on when the bad balls have come. The 71 balls it has come off looks pacier than it has felt.

  18. 50 runs

50 for Tom Alsoppublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 29 August

    Sussex 369-4 v Derbyshire

Tom Alsop reaches a half-century for Sussex as they look to get to a fourth batting point before the close.

  19. wicket

WICKET Prest c Iyer b Aspinwall 1published at 17:25 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 263-6

Wickets in successive overs with the new ball for Tom Aspinwall.

He induces a loose drive from new batter Tom Prest and the catch is taken at point.

A third wicket for Aspinwall and a second bowling point for Lancashire.

  20. wicket

WICKET Foakes c Verreynne b Ahmed 0published at 17:24 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 308-4

The 16-year-old Farhan Ahmed is on a hat-trick!

Ben Foakes is out first ball, tickling one through to the wicketkeeper.

Ahmed has 3-55 on his Notts debut. A brilliant day for him.
