Summary

  1. Postpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 93-3 v Durham

By Tom Banton's standards, it's been a quiet start, but he eases neatly into a Ben Raine half-volley and redirects it to the cover fence as Somerset look to build a partnership before lunch.

Banton has been in for around half an hour now and he's moved on to 13, with Tom Abell on 25.

Durham will be delighted if they can part these two prior to the interval.

  2. 50 runs

50 partnership between Compton and Evisonpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks v Kent 95-3

At 44-3, Kent looked in deep trouble.

But Ben Compton and Joey Evison have dug in, found some boundary options, and found a way to build a partnership.

  3. 50 runs

    Sussex 130-0 v Derbyshire

While the wickets have been tumbling elsewhere, Sussex have been making serene progress.

Daniel Hughes passed his half-century and has since raced on to 72, and opening partner Tom Haines has just reached 50 as well.

They are 130-0 from 21 overs.

  4. 'Hants made to work hard'published at 12:32 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 49-1

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Hampshire have been made to work hard this morning. There has been some good Lancashire bowling all round.

The mark of how well Lancashire have bowled is how little has gone square. Generally the batters have had to hit the ball pretty straight.

  5. Good view for fans in the Hollies Standpublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks v Kent 69-3

View of Edgbaston from the standsImage source, BBC Sport

Those in the Hollies Stand at Edgbaston are getting a closer than expected view of the action today.

The wicket being used is two tracks down from the one used in Warwickshire's last home game and makes it a pretty short boundary on that side of the ground.

  6. Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 64-1

Never mind, spin at one end, we have spin from both ends now at Trent Bridge.

That's right, Nottingham, the place for swing and seam. This is not Colombo, Delhi or Karachi.

Liam Patterson-White's left-armers are now complementing Farhan Ahmed at the other end.

  7. Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex v Worcs 71-5

What a stunning piece of fielding from Robin Das at midwicket.

The Essex youngster sprawls to stop the ball, and if that isn't enough he directly hits the stumps.

There is interest from the other Essex fielders, but Ethan Brookes was well back despite a mini mix-up.

  8. 50 runs

for Adam Lythpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 88-1 v Middx

Henry Brookes pitches one up outside off stump, it's asking to be cover driven and Adam Lyth obliges to reach his half-century from 56 balls.

It's the seventh time the prolific left-hander has passed 50 in the Championship this season and you certainly wouldn't bet against him converting that into a hundred.

  9. Postpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex v Worcs 67-5

Ethan Brookes reverse sweeps Simon Harmer to the boundary. You don't see that too often in the Championship!

Brookes, with Brett D'Oliveira, has countered nicely to put on 25 for the sixth wicket so far.

One thing in the batters' favour at Chelmsford this week is the lightning outfield.

  10. Postpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 84-1 v Middx

You don't often see spin introduced until the final over before lunch, certainly not on day one.

Maybe it's a reflection of how sparse the seamers' success has been, or maybe Middlesex feel there's some turn in this Headingley track - but either way, Luke Hollman proves there is in his first over.

The leg-spinner turns one sharply past the edge of James Wharton and presumably the eyes of both Dan Moriarty and Dom Bess, waiting in the Yorkshire dressing room, will have lit up at that sight.

  11. Ouch!published at 12:21 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 48-1

A worrying sight for Lancashire as number three Josh Bohannon hurts his hand while fielding at mid-on.

After some treatment from the physio, he is OK to continue for now.

He may need more treatment before he can bat, though.

  12. Postpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 57-1

A cracker off the back foot from Ryan Patel gets him four runs through extra cover off Lyndon James.

Patel is now into double figures, while his captain Rory Burns is on 35.

  13. Bowlers on top in early exchangespublished at 12:12 British Summer Time 29 August

I make that 20 wickets to fall in little over the first hour of play across the two divisions.

    It's been a busy start!

  14. Postpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks v Kent 61-3

Ben Compton demonstrates the difference between a soft-handed edge and a hard-handed edge.

The soft-handed one falls just short of second slip.

The hard-handed one whooshes past third slip and zips to the boundary.

Both good deliveries from Michael Rae, just well played by the batter.

  15. Postpublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex v Worcs 50-5

    It is Simon Harmer time!

It isn't usually too long before the off spinner trundles in from the Sir Alastair Cook End at Chelmsford. Just the 14 overs today.

The second ball turns from almost the return crease to a fourth stump line.

This could be fun to watch...perhaps not for Worcestershire followers.

  16. 'I like the look of Farhan'published at 12:08 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 47-1

    Dan Whiting
    BBC Radio Surrey

I like the look of Farhan Ahmed. He's given it a little bit more air.

He has a nice action. For spinners, everyone thinks it's about the fingers, but the action is very important.

Rob Lord has been very impressive, too. He's not bowled much rubbish, he's bowled in good areas, a nice line and length.

  17. wicket

WICKET: Goldsworthy c Robinson b Carse 38published at 12:07 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 68-3 v Durham

There's a first wicket for Brydon Carse since May!

Good delivery by the Durham seamer and Lewis Goldsworthy is a little static in the crease as he feathers it through to Ollie Robinson.

As so often with Somerset, there are now two Toms at the crease, with Banton emerging to join Abell.

  18. Postpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks v Kent 56-3

Ed Barnard comes into the attack and immediately tests Joey Evison in the channel of uncertainty.

Kent would have been happy to have seen the back of Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Chris Rushworth but there is very little let-up in Division One.

The head-banded Michael Rae is the other change bowler in operation.

  19. wicket

WICKET: Bean b Brookes 27published at 12:03 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 68-1 v Middx

It was hard to see where a wicket might come from - but the source is a miscued pull by Finlay Bean that deflects onto his leg stump.

Henry Brookes is the beneficiary as Middlesex finally break this opening stand of 68 and James Wharton joins Adam Lyth in the middle.

  20. Postpublished at 11:59 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 68-0 v Middx

It was a double bowling change for Middlesex, with Henry Brookes asked to operate in tandem with Tom Helm - but no joy whatsoever for either seamer as Yorkshire continue to dispatch the Kookaburra ball to all corners of Headingley.

Adam Lyth has just flayed Helm for three fours in his last over, two through the covers and the other a crisp straight drive.

He's on 39 not out, with Finlay Bean 27.
