Summary

  1. Six-wicket haul for Broadpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 29 August

    Glos 123-9 v Northants

A maiden five-wicket haul for Justin Broad has now become six as he does for Dom Goodman.

Only one more wicket to do for Northants who have blown the hosts away.

  2. Postpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex v Worcs 123-6

Logan van Beek has joined Brett D'Oliveira - it turns out they are related!

BBC Hereford and Worcester's Frank Watson takes over: "Basil D'Oliveira, Brett's grandfather, had a brother who married a lady called Elizabeth. Elizabeth has a first cousin called Sally, who is Logan's mother."

Small world! They have added six together so far.

  3. 100 runs

100 for Daniel Hughespublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 29 August

    Sussex 190-0 v Derbyshire

Daniel Hughes hits his first century for Sussex and the way his side are going you wouldn't back against opening partner Tom Haines joining him - he's on 71 at present.

Derbyshire are really struggling to find a breakthrough as Sussex approach 200.

  4. Postpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 29 August

    Yorks 136-2 v Middx

It's been a somewhat sedate start to the afternoon session, with Yorkshire adding just 15 from the first seven overs.

Four of those runs came courtesy of a loose ball from Tom Helm that careered past Jack Davies for four byes, but overall he and spinner Luke Hollman have done well to apply the brakes.

James Wharton is on 28, with Will Luxton yet to increase his lunchtime tally of eight runs.

    Notts v Surrey 108-1

The clock has just struck two and Nottinghamshire have already raced through 40 overs!

It helps when 24 overs of spin have been bowled.

  7. 50 runs

for Tom Abellpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 147-3 v Durham

Good knock by Tom Abell, who strokes another cover boundary off Brydon Carse to reach his half-century from 92 balls.

It's the fourth time this season that Abell has scored 50 or more in the Championship and his partnership with Tom Banton has now brought Somerset 79.

Banton was a little fortunate to survive earlier in the over, miscuing a pull off Carse that dropped safely between two fielders.

  8. wicket

WICKET Parkinson c Burgess b Rushworth 8published at 13:59 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks v Kent 129-8

That is a premium wobble seam delivery from Chris Rushworth.

The ball oscillates through the air while coming in, it then hits the seam and moves away.

Far far far too good for Matt Parkinson, who can only edge behind.

  9. wicket

WICKET Brookes c Pepper b Porter 46published at 13:55 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex v Worcs 118-6

For the 19th time in his career, Jamie Porter has a first class five-wicket haul.

Ethan Brookes can't leave a ball nibbling towards his stumps, but really really doesn't want to play it. The upshot is a thin edge and a third catch for Michael Pepper.

    High skills from Porter.

  10. Postpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex v Worcs 113-5

For the third time in this innings, Ethan Brookes has reverse-swept Simon Harmer for four.

He really has found a way to deal with the most imposing spinner on the circuit.

And now he hammers a cover drive to one which is floated up.

  11. Postpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 29 August

    Lancashire v Hampshire 83-1

Tom Bailey is into his third spell of the match as he resumes after lunch for Lancashire.

His 11 overs have gone for just 13 runs as he has been very accurate, but the Red Rose would love a couple of wickets in the column.

Bailey has been a consistent wicket-taker down the years, but he has just 15 Championship victims this summer.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Ben Comptonpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 29 August

    Warks v Kent 127-7

Ben Compton has been the calm in Kent's storm.

The opener hasn't done anything special, other than protect his wicket and not dangle away from his body - unlike many of his team-mates.

Compton's fifty comes in 74 balls, with Joey Evison's 28 the only other Kent batter to reach double figures.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Rory Burnspublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 95-1

Excellent stuff from a man in form in Rory Burns.

The Surrey captain backs up last week's 227 against Lancashire with a half-century here, his fourth 50 of the summer.

This comes off 104 balls with four fours and one six.

  14. Postpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 131-3 v Durham

Tom Abell and Tom Banton are looking to pick up where they left off before lunch, adding 11 in the first two overs of the afternoon session.

Abell, who cut a widish ball from Brydon Carse to the boundary, has moved on to 42, while Banton has 32 to his name.

  15. Postpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 29 August

    Notts v Surrey 93-1

A first boundary of the afternoon session at Trent Bridge.

Lyndon James, coming round the wicket, is pulled to the deep square leg fence by Ryan Patel.

An excellent shot as he dissects two fielders on the boundary down there.

  17. Abell and Banton steady Somerset after nervy startpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 29 August

    Somerset 120-3 v Durham

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Somerset have recovered well from the shock of losing Andy Umeed to the very first ball of the day, caught in the slips off Ben Raine.

Tom Lammonby top-edged a lifter from the impressive Daniel Hogg, but Lewis Goldsworthy justified his recall with a fluent 38 before Tom Abell and Tom Banton put together a partnership of 52 to take Somerset to lunch without further damage.

Durham had spin from both ends for the last 20 minutes, which suggests that they at least feel that this pitch may turn.

  18. Van der Gugten double has hosts on toppublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 29 August

    Glamorgan v Leicestershire 96-3

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

With the dual experiment of a hybrid pitch, for the first time in Cardiff, and a Kookaburra ball, it looked a good toss to win and Timm van der Gugten took advantage by cleaning up both openers, Rishi Patel and Ian Holland, with just 27 on the board.

Ajinkya Rahane was dropped at square-leg off Ned Leonard on 16 and that looked crucial to the balance of the morning’s play as he went on to 38 by the interval.

Van der Gugten, carrying far too much responsibility, was back for a second spell by 12:35 BST and responded by trapping Lewis Hill lbw for 25.

Glamorgan are giving a championship debut to young Jersey batter Asa Tribe, in the problem opening position, while seamer Sam Wood is making a maiden first-class appearance and Chris Wright a red-ball comeback for the Foxes.

  19. Porter stars before Pears fightbackpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 29 August

    Essex v Worcs 100-5

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

Worcestershire are fighting back after a horrendous start.

Although Essex lost a significant toss, the home side reduced Worcestershire to 10-4, before skipper, Brett D’Oliveira, together with the adventurous, Ethan Brookes, rescued their team to get to lunch at 100-5.

Essex’s opening bowlers bowled beautifully as Jamie Porter and Sam Cook kept it straight and made Worcestershire’s top order play every ball.

Porter has four of the five wickets to fall, with Cook taking the other.

Word of caution: Dean Elgar did drop D’Oliveira at slip off leggie, Matt Critchley, in the very last over before lunch was taken - how costly could that be?

  20. 'Sky's the limit' for new England bowler Hullpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 29 August

While we have a break, here's a bit of light reading for you on new England call-up Josh Hull.

He's not involved in the second Test against Sri Lanka, which started today, but has been picking up some invaluable words of wisdom from James Anderson in the nets.

Hull was a surprise inclusion in England’s Test and white-ball squads having played just 10 first-class matches in Division Two.

The 20-year-old came through the Leicestershire academy, where he was spotted by the county's head of talent pathway, Jigar Naik, who believes "the sky's the limit" for the seamer.

“He was an incredibly hard worker and thought about the game, which stood out really well,” Naik told BBC Radio Leicester’s Talking Foxes podcast.
