That is a very early undercut but I still think Max Verstappen can make a two-stop work, but that is much earlier than expected.

Kimi Antonelli pulls alongside Max Verstappen but the Dutchman peels off and comes into the pits instead to dump his medium tyres for a set of hards.

Tyre chat is the hot topic now. Max Verstappen is asked how he is getting on with the medium tyres and it's not good news, like the rest of the field.

We're now getting into quite a critical phase of the race.

People wanted to try and scrap for positions early on but it looks like everybody has calmed down now and is just in a tyre saving phase.

Trust me, they're busy working very hard in the cockpits of these cars making sure they keep their tyre life in perfect order.

    Lap 10/70

Polesitter George Russell will be happy if the rest of the race pans out like this. The Mercedes man is 1.8secs clear of Max Verstappen in second place.

Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari reckon tyre degradation is worse than expected. The Monegasque driver is on the hard C4 compound.

  12. 'Verstappen gives his tyres a break'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 15 June

    Sam Bird
Formula E driver on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

I think Max Verstappen is giving his tyres a bit of a break, you heard him lift and coasting into Turn 10 quite heavily and taking it nice and steady.

He doesn't want to be in too much turbulent air behind George Russell.

    Lap 7/70

Alex Albon's start was a scrappy affair as he got caught in a mess trying to fight with the Alpine of Franco Colapinto. The lush grass was well and truly cut by the Williams.

    Lap 6/70

A clear head is needed for George Russell now and as we reach lap six, the Mercedes breaks the DRS attack of Max Verstappen, so he can relax the shoulders slightly.

At the back of the field, Yuki Tsunoda has gained one place to P17 and Lance Stroll has dropped to P19.

  15. 'Not worried about Piastri'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 15 June

    Sam Bird
Formula E driver on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

We've seen time and time again that the McLarens are good on tyre usage.

We also see them hanging back a bit and waiting until other people hurt or destroy their tyres and then they come charging through.

I'm not too worried about where Oscar Piastri is. He's going to be conserving his tyres but expect to see a charge towards the end of this opening stint.

    Lap 5/70

The fight is intense for the lead and George Russell's tyres are going through a workout they probably didn't want so early in the race. The Mercedes also likes the cooler temperatures, so these hot track conditions in Montreal might start to bite for Russell.

Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are sitting in fifth and sixth respectively on their medium tyres, while Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, the hard runners and keeping up with the pace.

George Russell is holding onto the P1 but four-time world champion Max Verstappen is creeping ever closer to the Mercedes.

    Lap 3/70

George Russell is leading Max Verstappen by seven tenths as we reach lap three in Montreal but the Dutchman is clocking fastest laps in the Red Bull. Kimi Antonelli is losing a bit of ground on the front two and now has Oscar Piastri's McLaren starting to breathe down his rear wing.

It looks like the top eight are already making a bit of a break away from Nico Hulkenberg, and I expect that gap to grow.

Alex Albon has dropped from ninth to 12th after running across the grass while battling in the midfield. Nico Hulkenberg, who scored a fifth-placed finish in Barcelona, is up to Albon's ninth place in the Sauber.
