    Birmingham 0-0 Norwich

Jay Stansfield saw a low strike blocked but the ball broke to Koji Miyoshi whose drive down the middle needed to be parried away by the Norwich keeper.

  2. 'The crowd are singing'published at 12:38 British Summer Time 4 May 2024

    Birmingham 0-0 Norwich

    Kerys Harrop
Ex-Birmingham City women defender on BBC Radio WM

It's a nice, positive start for Blues. They've got the crowd singing already.

They have high energy and are getting the ball up into Norwich's half. You can tell as a player that they've come out positive and that energy will spread across the team.

    Plymouth 0-0 Hull City

First sight of goal at Home Park comes for the visitors as Jaden Philogene cuts inside from the left and unleashes a shot which is blocked by the head of Dan Scarr.

    Leeds 0-0 Southampton

    Ian Woodcock
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

There's a great atmosphere here, with Leeds knowing all they can do is win and hope for a massive favour from their local rivals Huddersfield.

An early goal might just put a bit of pressure on Ipswich and fans were irate moments ago when a restart was delayed while one of the assistant referees got some technical support.

  5. 'Ipswich will get the job done'published at 12:35 British Summer Time 4 May 2024

    Ipswich 0-0 Huddersfield

Mick Mills was Ipswich captain under the late, great Bobby Robson.

He is a voice so often heard on BBC Radio Suffolk. He has lived Ipswich Town for so much of his life.

Before kick-off, he didn't mince his words when giving a prediction.

"I’m looking forward to seeing the team get the job done," he said.

"And I say get the job done because I have no feeling whatsoever that we are going to disappoint anyone today."

The Ipswich supporters have played their part but top of my list is the manager. What Kieran McKenna's done in these last two years.

I expected him to do reasonably well in this division but I didn't expect he'd put us where we are today.

    Leeds v Southampton (12:30 BST)

    Ian Woodcock
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

The weather here in West Yorkshire today matches the mood of most of the fans turning up for today's game, overcast.

Leeds have been almost perfect here at Elland Road but their sole defeat came in their last outing as struggling Blackburn came away with a 1-0 victory.

If that result was damaging then the 4-0 battering at QPR last week was a nightmare.

Few fans think near-neighbours Huddersfield, all-but relegated and in disarray, are likely to do them a favour and Ipswich but, it's the final day and stranger things have happened.

A few weeks ago this game looked like it could potentially be a win and in for either side but it's all fallen apart when it really matters.

Today might look like a dead rubber for play-off bound Southampton, who are guaranteed to finish fourth, but they head here on the back of three straight defeats and wont want to go into the post-season off a quartet of losses.

I see the sun's shining in Suffolk...

There are of course a few games in which fans can simply sit back and enjoy their team's final day of the league campaign.

A relaxing final day with little riding on it can be an almighty blessing if you just saved yourself from relegation, but for teams with more lofty ambitions it is often the sign of a disappointing campaign and there will be envious glances aplenty at the sides battling for promotion above.

Coventry are one of those sides thinking about what might have been. They were in the play-off mix before a loss of form saw them drop out of contention and then came within a toenail of reaching the FA Cup final. They face a buoyant QPR side who saved themselves from any final day relegation nerves with that massive 4-0 win at Leeds.

Middlesbrough and Watford are two sides who probably expected better this season. A win here would secure eighth spot for Michael Carrick's men, while it's been a season of strife for the Hornets who will finish in the bottom half whatever happens today.

Two wins in a three-match unbeaten run have moved Stoke clear of danger at just the right time. Steven Schumacher's Potters host one of the division's form teams in Bristol City, who are unbeaten in seven. Unfortunately, that run has come too late to allow them to threaten the play-off spots and it will be another mid-table finish for the Robins.

West Brom v Preston (12:30 BST)

    Alex PalmerImage source, Getty Images

It’s also a nervy day for Baggies fans after their recent form took a major dip, with three defeats on the bounce putting their play-off prospects in doubt.

Carlos Corberan's side had been fifth for five months before a 3-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Sheffield Wednesday last week saw them slip to sixth.

That defeat has opened the door for Hull City to potentially pinch a play-off spot on the final day if they can win at 21st-placed Plymouth.

Albion are still in the driving seat though and goal difference means they need to avoid losing to 10th-placed Preston to be sure of a play-off berth.

Ryan Lowe's team actually come into the game in worse form than their opponents, losing their lost four games without scoring, with an aggregate of 8-0.

Their last Championship goal came on 9 April and surely they won't want to finish off the campaign with another blank so it could get interesting this afternoon.

  14. Millers look for crumb of comfort against Bluebirdspublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 4 May 2024

Rotherham v Cardiff City (12:30 BST)

Rotherham have had a season to forget.

Their relegation back to League One was confirmed weeks ago and Matt Taylor and Leam Richardson have both been sacked as manager.

Club legend Steve Evans is back for another spell in the dugout and he's bullish about them challenging for promotion next season.

He wants to give the fans something to cheer today as they bring down the curtain on a miserable campaign.

They've not scored a goal since 1 April so that might be somewhere to start.

Opponents Cardiff also have nothing to play for as they're bound for a mid-table finish and boss Errol Bulut's future remains unclear.

  15. The battle to be best of the bottom?published at 12:12 British Summer Time 4 May 2024

    Swansea v Millwall (12:30 BST)

Ok, so there's no point pretending much rides on this but Millwall fans will be delighted that's the case.

A few weeks ago it looked like they could still be dragged into trouble at the foot of the table but four successive runs have seen them climb to 16th and depending on results elsewhere today they could usurp Swansea to finish 13th.

The Swans have had a topsy-turvy campaign after Michael Duff's short-lived and unhappy period in charge.

They also come into the game in fine form, with three wins and a draw from their past four games.

The battle to finish 13th is on!

Sunderland v Sheff Wed (12:30 BST)

Of all the fans involved in the relegation battle, you’d imagine Sheffield Wednesday supporters slept the best last night.

The Owls’ five-match unbeaten run, earning them 11 points, could not have been timed better, and Danny Rohl’s men now need only a point to ensure survival at the Stadium of Light this lunchtime.

This is the side who took just seven points from their first 18 games, won one league game before December (at home to Rotherham) and spent the entire season in the relegation zone until last week.

While they are now odds-on to beat the drop, Wednesday don’t have a great record at Sunderland, losing seven of their last 11 visits there, winning only once in 2017-18.

However the visitors will take hope from the fact the Black Cats have been off-colour, winning just two of their last 14 games and only scoring one goal in five matches.

If Wednesday can finish with a win that would be an incredible 46 points from their last 28 games - play-off form really - and give plenty of cause for optimism going into next season.

Plymouth v Hull City (12:30 BST)

Walking to Home Park this morning you could feel a real sense of tension in the air.

The home fans know survival is in their hands - but there is also that nagging thought that even with defeat they could still be safe if Birmingham City fail to win

They have had a tough time since Christmas after the bad run under short-lived boss Ian Foster saw them drop closer and closer to the relegation places.

Meanwhile Tigers fans are similarly tense.

It is the best part of a 350-mile trip down to Plymouth from Humberside and even victory for them today may not be enough to make the play-offs should Norwich City and West Brom pick up points.

  18. Edgy afternoon in storepublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 4 May 2024

Plymouth v Hull City (12:30 BST)

Only one thing is for sure at Home Park today, no fan is going to be sitting comfortably.

Plymouth have survival in their hands but, if they can’t find a priceless win, then keeping it tight looks imperative with Birmingham waiting to pounce.

Hull meanwhile still have a play-off dream alive which requires them to win, and ideally win big.

The Tigers have a fine record against the Pilgrims, whose last win in the fixture came in 2007 under Ian Holloway.

The equation is simple enough, win and you’re safe, for Plymouth, whereas Hull need to win and hope West Brom lose or Norwich lose with a big goal difference swing.

Come 14:45 BST you could have either set of fans celebrating, both, or neither, such is the nature of the world’s most ludicrous division.

    Birmingham v Norwich (12:30 BST)

    Ged Scott
BBC Sport at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park

This may or may not be the day when Birmingham City - the Championship's longest survivors - come to the end of the road after 13 years in the second tier.

But whatever happens this lunchtime, Blues fans have made sure they don't miss it.

Two hours before kick-off at St Andrew's the usual traffic chaos in the roads round Small Heath and Tyseley was in evidence.

And the pubs, bars and snack kiosks around the ground are already doing a roaring trade.

It's going to take a lot more than just pre-match fuel to roar Blues to the must-win performance they need this afternoon - and even then the fans will be anxiously refreshing their hand-held devices to check how games elsewhere are going.

All they need is a victory - and one result in the three 'other games' to go their way! And to 'keep right on til the end of the road ... as they say in these parts!

    Birmingham v Norwich (12:30 BST)

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the last time Birmingham were relegated to the third tier of English football.

Blues went down with a fight in May 1994, their final day win at Tranmere making it 17 points from their last seven games, though it was too little, too late.

This afternoon Gary Rowett's men welcome Norwich having taken only nine points since February and knowing even victory might not be enough to avoid relegation.

The omens look gloomy for the hosts, the Canaries have won the past six in a row against Birmingham, who have taken just a point off Norwich from their past 10 encounters.

While they have picked up two wins in their last three at home overall, Blues have also lost their final game in the last four seasons.

Norwich also need something from this, in theory at least. A win would seal fifth place, a point would guarantee a play-off spot and, so long as there are no eight-goal swings, even a loss would likely see them pip Hull to the play-offs.
