Having taken over last summer, Blues owners Knighthead have not let the grass grow off the field.

In April they revealed the full extent of their plans to become a global footballing force with the announcement that they had bought land close to Blues’ current home on which to build a new stadium and sports complex.

But that is all due to take up to five years to complete - and will now have to be undertaken from a place back in the third tier.

It makes for a sombre sight seeing the stunned locals take in Birmingham City's relegation back to the third tier for the first time since Barry Fry brought Blues up in 1995.

A line of police across the pitch - but, aside from an initial surge by a small section of home fans, there was little bother.

Most Blues fans were mentally prepared for this after such a shambolic season.

And the loyal fans who have stopped on at least got the chance to "show their appreciation" to the team, boos as well as cheers, after they returned to the pitch.

Leeds United fully played their part in making the automatic promotion race one for the ages.

They have finished the season in third place on 90 points - that is the highest ever points tally by a team not to get automatically promoted from the division.

    Talk about unwanted records.

Ipswich Town have joined an exclusive club with promotion today.

Since the inception of the Premier League, they have become just the fifth side to earn promotion from the third tier to the top flight.

They follow Watford (1998-99 and 1999-00), Manchester City (1999-00 and 2000-01), Norwich City (2010-11 and 2011-12) and Southampton (2011-12 and 2012-13).

Their points tally of 96 is the second highest they’ve ever recorded in a single campaign, only behind the 98 they attained in League One last season.

Plymouth Argyle's players and staff and their families have come onto the field to acknowledge the crowd.

It's a celebration of sorts for then Pilgrims, who despite having one of the lowest budgets in the second tier have sealed survival.

They face Norwich, who finished sixth, over two legs in the semi-final.

  8. 'Atmosphere flat'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 4 May 2024

FT: Birmingham 1-0 Norwich - Blues relegated to League One

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport at St Andrew's

A half-hearted pitch invasion greeted the final whistle at St Andrew's after Birmingham's relegation was confirmed.

Most seemed to want to take selfies, some grabbing a picture with goalkeeper John Ruddy, although there were a couple of scuffles with stewards.

Some young fans even started playing football before the pitch was eventually cleared. It was all a bit unnecessary and the atmosphere is understandably flat now.

There is an incredible amount of positivity with what chairman Tom Wagner has promised and could produce in the future - he has vowed plans for £3bn Sports Quarter and new stadium will not change with relegation - but it has not been reflected on the pitch.

  9. 13 is unlucky for Bluespublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 4 May 2024

FT: Birmingham 1-0 Norwich - Blues relegated to League One

After 13 straight seasons in the Championship, the division's longest continuous run, Birmingham have gone.

The crown of longevity now belongs to Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers and Bristol City, who have all been in the division since the start of 2015-16.

While Leicester prepare to get their hand on the Championship trophy, word filters through that Ipswich also have a piece of silverware waiting for them.

Yep, the second-placed trophy is theirs to celebrate with.

Sure, it's automatic promotion but surely a ceremonial shield or plate would do the job?

Oh, and I'm fully aware of my misery gut vibes right now.

    FT: Leeds 1-2 Southampton

    Simon Grayson
Ex-Leeds manager on BBC Radio Leeds

You are now finishing third, you've got the opportunity to get into the Premier League. Would you have took that at the start of the season? Absolutely.

Everybody in this stadium will be absolutely devastated how it's ended up because they wanted automatic promotion but, this season has had plenty of highs and it can still finish on one.

They've got a second opportunity and that's got to be the message. From Daniel Farke especially.

    FT: Leicester 0-2 Blackburn

Leicester have lost the day, but they have the Championship trophy to lift now.

Defeat has maybe taken a little shine off the celebrations, as they fall short of the 100-point mark, but that will soon be forgotten.

    FT: Leeds 1-2 Southampton

    Ian Woodcock

The full-time whistle is greeted by quite a few boos, mainly aimed at the referee I should say, and a pretty big exodus.

The fans who have stayed roar their encouragement at the applauding players. Leeds must lift themselves now and go again against Norwich in the play-offs.

For Southampton, who were good money for their win here, West Brom await in the post-season.

Could these pair meet again at Wembley in just over three weeks?

It's sad, disappointing. There's some fantastic players there and they shouldn't be in this position. There's so much quality in the team and they've had some outstanding performances this season.

It's a sad end to the season and it could have been very different.
