Some stout defence, and good judgement, from Wayne Madsen to Ben Mike in the final over of the day sees Derbyshire through to stumps without any further loss.

A flurry of wickets gave Leicestershire a sniff of wrapping up victory today, especially after some daft shots from Derbyshire's top order in their second innings.

So credit must go to Derbyshire duo Madsen (59 not out) and Alex Thomson (46 not out) who provided some stern resistance to blunt the Foxes attack in the evening session and make it to the close.

The pair shared an unbroken stand of 80 for the seventh wicket and will resume on day four with Derbyshire 183 runs behind.

With some rain forecast tomorrow Derbyshire may yet will escape with a draw.

It's been an intriguing day's cricket.

  5. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 21 April

    Kent 244 & 120-5 v Surrey 543-7 dec

Without help from the weather, Kent are going to need to produce something special to prevent champions Surrey registering their first victory of the season.

Ben Compton, though, glances Kemar Roach for four in the final over of day three as he and Joey Evison hang on for the home side.

Surrey built a 299-run first innings lead before declaring on the back of centuries by Dom Sibley (150) and Dan Lawrence (112).

And Dan Worrall took 3-18 as Kent's top order was dismantled in the final session, including the wicket of England's Zak Crawley for four.

    Kent 244 & 114-5 v Surrey 543-7 dec

Cameron Steel is back for the penultimate over of the day.

His earlier struggles continue as a half-tracker is pulled for one by Joey Evison.

Steel thinks he has Ben Compton lbw but it may have pitched outside leg-stump.

  8. Postpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 21 April

    Kent 244 & 112-5 v Surrey 543-7 dec

Block or leave - that was the approach of Ben Compton in these final overs of the day at Canterbury.

But he tucks one away to square leg for two runs to get off the mark following 29 dot balls.

The left-hander then tries to pull Kemar Roach but doesn't make a clean contact.

Two more overs to survive and then he can get some more attention from the Kent physio for his sore neck.

  9. Postpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 21 April

    Derbyshire 167 & 209-6 v Leicestershire 574-7 dec

Six overs until stumps in Derby.

Joey Evison drives Kemar Roach through the covers for four in the next.

    Four more to come.

A gritty knock, mixed in with the odd moment of flair, from Wayne Madsen as he notches his second County Championship fifty of the season shortly before the close.

The Italy international reaches his half-century with stylish cut for four through point off the bowling of Scott Currie.

  12. Postpublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 21 April

    Kent 244 & 102-5 v Surrey 543-7 dec

Kemar Roach almost has another for Surrey as he pierces Ben Compton's defence but it just misses the stumps.

Compton is batting with an off stump guard and Roach ends the over with an lbw appeal, but the umpire says it is missing.

  13. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 21 April

    Sussex 479 v Gloucestershire 417 & 81-6

Ollie Robinson and Jayden Seales took two wickets each as Sussex ripped through the Gloucestershire batters on day three.

Miles Hammond ends the day not out on 25 and will start day four alongside Zafar Gohar, with Gloucestershire hoping to turn their very slender 19-run advantage into a total that could potentially be a match-winning one.

And Kent are now looking down the barrel.

    That's a big, big wicket.

  15. Close of play at Northamptonpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 21 April

    Northants 605-6 dec v Glamorgan 271 & 104-3

Glamorgan are content to block out the final 15 overs of play after the loss of three wickets following an afternoon of ball-chasing at Wantage Road.

Colin Ingram and Kiran Carlson will resume on 11 and 10 respectively, with a lot of batting to do if Glamorgan are to extricate themselves from this game with a draw.

Following Ricardo Vasconcelos' departure for 182, Karun Nair provided a sparking batting exhibition for Northants, scoring an unbeaten 202 - with Saif Zaib also making 100 - before the declaration came.

  16. 'A fruitless day for Somerset'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 21 April

A great day for Nottinghamshire, 380-1 is the Notts tally during the day.

It's been a long, hard and apart from the one wicket of Haseeb Hameed, fruitless day for Somerset's bowlers and fielders.

Dan Worrall bends his back and a little extra bounce finds the shoulder of Jack Leaning's bat, with Dom Sibley taking the catch at slip.

There are still seven overs left. Can Surrey get this done this evening?

  19. Close of play at Southamptonpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 21 April

    Hampshire 365 v Warwickshire 455 & 46-0

Early in the afternoon this match looked to heading for a draw as Fletcha Middleton and Nick Gubbins both compiled centuries.

Middleton's was his maiden first-class hundred while Gubbins made his 17th.

But Warwickshire's bowlers, spearheaded by part-time offie Rob Yates who finished with 4-37, battled back in the afternoon to give themselves a glimmer of a hope they can force a result on the final day.

With a lead of 136 heading into tomorrow Warwickshire skipper Alex Davies, who finished the day 34 not out, will have to get his declaration spot on.

  20. Postpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 21 April
