And Michael Conlon is right! The Northern Irishman wins in an unanimous decision, giving silver to England's Qais Ashfaq. He skips over to his corner where his old man John, also his coach, scoops him into his arms.

What a finish to the round and the contest. Michael Conlan pounces on Qais Ashfaq, pins him to the ropes and batters his opponent's body in the final 20 seconds. The Irishman thinks he has won it...

    Richie Woodhall
BBC Sport boxing expert & 1990 Commonwealth champion

"Michael Conlan has got the longer reach but he is conceding that and that is suiting Qais Ashfaq, who is a counter puncher and boxes well on the back foot. Conlan knows he has got to get to his man, he is taking risks and this fight is scrappy."

Michael Conlon is finding his rhythm nicely as Qais Ashfaq looks hesitant in round three. The Irishman lands a left then slaps in a right, before sparking Ashfaq with another stab with the right.

Despite setting two world records, England's Ali Jawad wins bronze in the men's Para-sport lightweight powerlifting competition.

Jawad, who was born without legs, lifts 191kg and then 194kg for 209.4 points and a new world record in his 59kg category and celebrates by doing a cartwheel.

Nigerian pair Paul Kehinde (221.0pts) and Rolland Ezuruike (220.2) win gold and silver.

Michael Conlan shows his frustration in round two as he shoves over England's Qais Ashfaq. But the Irishman is always on the front foot and is rewarded in the final 30 seconds with a couple of quick combinations. Another close round but it is Conlon who edges the scoring on all three cards.

    Amir Khan
Former world boxing champion and BBC Sport expert

"I have a big interest in Qais Ashfaq, he is a friend of mine. I went to see him in the dressing room today and he seems very calm and confident. He and Michael Conlan have never fought before but they have sparred.

"Ashfaq was one of my favourites to win the gold before the Games and he looked really good in the semis. I've got my money on him for this one. Conlan's cut has healed up well, the backroom staff have done a good job and I am sure he will be fine."

England's Ashfaq shades the judges' card as Conlan's trainer slaps loads of vaseline on that weeping cut. One good punch from Ashfaq and the wound is ready to burst.

England might have the big names in Laura Massaro and Jenny Duncalf but India's fifth seeds Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa absolutely boss the opening game of the gold-medal match, taking it 11-6 with a far greater variety of shot. "Push, push, push," says the Indian coach at the changeover.

I think Andrew Maloney's ringwalk song has just been trumped by Northern Ireland's Michael Conlan. The patched-up Conlan, with stitches above that badly-cut right eye, bounds out to Jimi Hendrix.

And there's not much cross-ring traffic as Conlan and Ashfaq exchange plenty of flurries in a lively opening round. Hard one to call...

    Anthony Ogogo
BBC Sport boxing expert, on BBC Breakfast

"Northern Ireland's Michael Conlan sustained a bad cut in the semi-final, raising the age-old debate about head guards. He is going to wish he had one and will have to negate his way through the final against Qais Ashfaq of England.

"Ashfaq looked really good in his semi-final and will go for Conlan's cut. If he can re-open the wound and make it bleed the referee will be forced to award him the fight."

"There we have it, the first rendition of Danny Boy at this year's Commonwealth Games and it's Northern Ireland team captain Paddy Barnes atop the podium. This next fight could be an absolute crackerjack, Michael Conlan of Northern Ireland, a bronze medallist at London 2012, up against slick English southpaw Qais Ashfaq, one of the revelations of the Game."

"Most boxing gloves are made in Pakistan but they don't have any equipment over there at all. I was speaking to the Pakistan team and they were saying they had no facilities to train, just a big field. So I said look I am going to try and help you guys. I want to build a boxing academy over there, like the one I have one in Bolton. There is so much talent there but it's not being used."

England's world champion Ali Jawad makes a solid start in the Para-sport lightweight powerlifting competition with an opening lift of 186.0 which gives him 200.8 points and puts him in third place with two lifts to go and there looks like there is more to come from the 25-year-old.

And they are guaranteed another one. But will it be gold or silver? Laura Massaro and Jenny Duncalf are walking out to face India's Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa in the final. Watch the match here.

"Paddy Barnes is in a great position now but if I was him I would wait another two years before turning professional and try for the gold at the Olympics in Rio. He would be much more marketable that way, but the main thing is he would get more experience and then when he does turn professional he will be nice and strong."
