Imagine gearing up for four years and then spending just 26 minutes out on court in your opening match. That's what happened to England's top seeds Chris and Gabby Adcock earlier - and they were delighted.

Because the husband-and-wife pairing, who received a first-round bye, needed less than half an hour to clinch a 21-12 21-13 win over Northern Ireland's Tony Murphy and Alannah Stephenson.

"It was about getting the job done today and saving as much energy as we can for the later matches," says Gabby, 24.

"Nicola Adams looks really sharp and boxed that these first two rounds beautifully. She put Erandi de Silva down on the canvas at the end of the first round and this should be pretty straightforward. She looks totally dominant and has far too much skill."

Cracking atmosphere at the SECC as England's Olympic champion Nicola Adams heads out for her 51kg quarter-final bout with Sri Lanka's Erandi de Silva. Huge cheer when Adams' name is read out and a trademark beaming smile from the flyweight boxer.

"Max Whitlock will finish the competition off from here and he deserves the gold medal.

"Nile Wilson, his coach will have told him just to ignore the pressure. We knew it would be close but never this close. He is such a classy gymnast to watch and he has nothing to lose. This is his first year in the senior ranks and I think it is a given he will come away with at least a bronze."

England's Nile Wilson is the junior world champion on the high bar and qualified better than Dan Keatings on that piece of kit.

This battle for silver is going to be very tight indeed.

England's Nile Wilson's routine is less ambitious than Dan Keatings' but it is more slickly executed.

An age-old dilemma for the judges. How do they weigh Wilson's effort? They slap a 15.433 on it and that make the battle for silver squeaky tight with one apparatus to go.

    Standings after five apparatus:

    1. M Whitlock (Eng) 75.531

    2. D Keatings (Sco) 73.532

    3. N Wilson (Eng) 73.199

Tom Daley will compete in the 10m synchro event alongside 20-year-old James Denny on Friday, announce Team England.

The pair have not competed together before but Leeds-based Denny has recently spent time training with 20-year-old Daley in London.

Daley, reigning Commonwealth champion in the event, had struggled to find a suitable synchronised partner since the retirement of Pete Waterfield last year.

Daniel Keatings muddled through the parallel bars rather than excelling like he normally does. He looks disappointed on dismount. A score of 14.766 when he is capable of touching up towards 16 won't have improved his mood.

England's Alison Waters and Peter Barker beat Tesni Evans and Peter Creed from Wales in the Mixed Doubles Pool D match 11-9 10-11 11-5. The victory puts the English pair clear at the top of their pool with two wins out of two.

"Dan Keatings is very good on the bars and scored well in qualification, but I don't think it will be enough to challenge Max Whitlock. I think it's safe to say Max will pick up the gold today. But there's a good battle on for silver with Nile Wilson."

  15. Gymnasticspublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 30 July 2014

Right, what can Scotland's Daniel Keatings pull out on the parallel bars. Can he keep at least a little pressure on leader Max Whitlock heading into the final piece of apparatus? And keep himself out of the range of Nile Wilson behind him?

"When the gymnasts are performing it's a bit like a cricket match: polite applause as they approach the apparatus, followed by silence and, then, slightly louder cheers, as if a cover drive has gone for four, when they dismount. That's unless you're a Scottish gymnast. The rules change if you're in blue and white. If you're Dan Keatings or Dan Purvis it's as if you've smashed 36 in one over after every twist and twirl."

  17. Gymnasticspublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 30 July 2014

Scotland's Daniel Purvis is attempting to leapfrog England's Nile Wilson to move into third. He may have to rely on his performance in the high bar because a score of 14.200 on the parallel bars leaves him vulnerable to slipping further behind.

Wilson is the last man on the parallel bars.

She has had to battle through several matches already at Glasgow, but Wales' Megan Phillips finally books her spot in the second round of the women's singles. A hard-fought 4-3 win over Guyana teenager Chelsea Edghill sticks her into the last 32, where she will face Ye Lin of Singapore later on.

"Michaela Walsh is going to be tough to beat in the semi-finals after coming through her quarter. The only person out there who can beat her is Nicola Adams. It's all shaping up for a gold medal fight with her. But I'm really delighted that Michaela's guaranteed a medal for Northern Ireland because she works so hard."

Historic moment for Michaela Walsh as she ensures she will become the first Northern Ireland female to secure a Commonwealth Games boxing medal after beating Jamaica's Sarah Joy Rae to book her place in the flyweight semi-final.

That guarantees a bronze medal at the very least, but Walsh has her eye on going even further, telling BBC Sport: "I feel strong in the weight and I am flying at the moment."

Walsh could meet Olympic champion Nicola Adams in the final and has already described the Englishwoman as "beatable".
