He has put in a good show so far, finishing in the top six in the previous four disciplines, but Wales' Clinton Purnell has had a bit of an shocker there in the parallel bars.

"Surreal scenes between the rounds at the SECC. As the trainers of heavyweight rivals David Light of New Zealand and Charles Okoth of Kenya attempt to steel their men for the three minutes of bombing to come, the crowd bursts into a rendition of Sweet Caroline, complete with swaying hands. "Where it began, I can't being to knowin'..."

Scotland's Stephen Lavelle booked his place in the 91kg semi-finals earlier and he now knows his opponent after New Zealand's David Light beat Kenyan Charles Okoth.

BBC Sport's boxing expert Barry McGuigan jumps at the chance to make a groan-worthy pun, telling BBC Radio 5 live: "He knocked his opponent out in a previous round so he should be called David Lightsout. He is quite a puncher.

"However, Stephen is very determined and he definitely has a chance against any of the guys here."

"Go on Max," says a voice, possibly belonging to a coach, off camera.

All-around leader Max Whitlock looks like someone could shout it down his ear via a megaphone and he would be too focused to flinch.

He pulls himself up onto the parallel bars and delivers a near-faultless performance. 14.966 say the judges and that all but guarantees gold for the Englishman.

"Daniel Purvis did a great vault, he had a slight step to the side but has been scoring highly and parallel bars, up next, is a really strong piece for him. Daniel Keatings has gone superbly well in this competition and the crowd will be giving him even more support.

"Max Whitlock has been taking a few risks, he wants to practice his most difficult moves ahead of the World Championships. He has all the expectation on him and I have seen him pacing around down there."

"To have three Scots, two English and a Welsh guy all in the top seven at this point of the competition, that is great for British Gymnastics."

Frank Baines is the third Scot. The 21-year-old is seventh on 55.324.

Scotland's Daniel Purvis is just outside the medal spots, trailing Nile Wilson of England in third by a mere 0.567.

Wales' Clinton Purnell is fifth on 56.065.

Leader Max Whitlock strolls across to the parallel bars, head bowed, ignoring the cameras that are trying to catch a flicker of doubt or nerves as he closes in on gold.

Talking about Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt denying he made disparaging remarks about Glasgow 2014: "It is selfie city for him. It must be tough getting mobbed everywhere he goes for autographs and photos. I know he is only doing the 100m relay, but he has still got to compete."

Do you reckon as a superstar sportsman you now have to pose for selfies more than you sign autographs nowadays? Do the grin muscles wear out quicker than the scribbling ones? Do some fans push their luck and want both?

"You can definitely tell these guys are on their third day of competition. Scotland's Daniel Purvis, performing a vault that would have been easy for him on day one, takes a big step back here. They are still performing very well though."

Scotland's Daniel Keatings, second overall after three apparatus, is the last man to go on the vault and he plays it relatively safe with a double twist, rather than go for something worth more points but more risky.

He lands it for a score of 14.333, the fifth best of his group of gymnasts, and he has a strong parallel bars routine to come.

It will have to be very strong indeed to overhaul Max Whitlock though.

    Standings after four apparatus:

    1. M Whitlock (Eng) 60.565

    2. D Keatings (Sco) 58.766

    3. N Wilson (Eng) 57.766

Next up for the leading men in the all around final is the vault.

Nile Wilson of England is the first man to take the stage.

This is the piece of apparatus this will forever be associated in American minds with Kerry Strug, who vaulted with an injured ankle to apparently secure team gold for the hosts ahead of the Russians at Atlanta 1996.

That was the legend. As Barry Davies explains, the truth was a little less Hollywood.
