    New Zealand 34-40 England

This is far from over for the Kiwis, with just two consolidated turnovers in it.

But they need some inspiration from somewhere to do that, with Folau most likely to provide it.

England continue to play their game, as Harten shoots her way through her dip in form and effortlessly sinks a couple of long-shots.

Guthrie is playing out of her skin at centre and produces yet another tip on the edge of the Silver Ferns shooting circle.

New Zealand will need to play their quarter of the tournament to overhaul the Roses now.

It's 26 degrees on the Gold Coast and this is an open air pool. There are worse ways to spend your morning than taking part or watching this. In fact there's a family in the stands catching some rays and applying the sun cream. Nice.

England's defending champion Jack Laugher is the first to dive in this preliminary round. Onto the board he goes...

The England bench are right into this. Their warm-ups seem to consist of lunging towards the court and hollering their support.

Maria Folau's dead-eyed distance shooting is keeping the Kiwis afloat.

    New Zealand 30-36 England

England, who have been poor on pouncing on the rebound in defence so far tonight, get it right with New Zealand threatening to claw back the lead.

The Roses are starting to dominate the centre court, with the ball finding the shooters just fine, but Harten's shooting form has suddenly deserted her, giving the Kiwis a boost.

This one is swinging back and forth, but it's England making the most of possession as New Zealand struggle to get the ball to their shooters.

Those Silver Ferns changes in the shooting circle do not appear to have worked out.

    No Daley

World champion diver Tom Daley will not defend his Commonwealth individual 10m title at Gold Coast 2018 because of a hip injury.

Daley, 23, who was looking to win the event for the third Games in a row, has been struggling with "on-going medical issues alongside a further injury in the pool last week".

He was the strong favourite, but will still compete with fellow Olympic bronze medallist Dan Goodfellow in the synchronised 10m platform on Friday as the dives are less "dangerous".

Daley said he is "truly devastated" he will not be able to take part in the individual event on Saturday.

    Volunteer

There are some sharp movers on court, but I'm not sure any have been as slick as the volunteer who shimmied their way across the big screen at half time.

They even did that Pulp-Fiction-style hold-yer-nose deep-sea-diver move. Haven't seen that in a while.

England force handy leadpublished at 00:53 British Summer Time 11 April 2018

    New Zealand 26-30 England

This is a massive half of netball for both sides. The Roses have the chance to beat New Zealand for the fourth time in nine months, while New Zealand need the win to qualify for the semi-finals.

Any kind of error is pounced on at this point and a consolidated turnover is vital for the outcome of the game, and it's the Roses who have come out firing after the break.

Bailey Mes and Folau, who have swapped shooting positions, are not as fluid and England have forced a handy four-goal lead at the start of the third quarter.

The sides traded intercepts in defence, but England are keeping their noses in front.

Today sees the first of four days of the diving competition. First up is the preliminary round of the men's 1m springboard event (01:07 BST) which features England's Olympic champion Jack Laugher who is defending his Commonwealth title in the event.

Laugher is first to dive and is joined by brothers Jack and Ross Haslam. Scottish 20-year-old James Heatly is also competing, seeking to emulate his late grandfather Sir Peter Heatly - the winner of five Commonwealth diving gold medals in the 1950s - and Lucas Thomson also competes for Scotland.

Each diver will dive six times with the top 12 progressing to the final. You'll be able to watch here.

You can telll how much this match means to those back in New Zealand.

The press seats are ram-jammed with TVNZ staff. Most of whom are here through patriotic duty rather than professional obligation.

The view seems to be that current team are a slow-motion car-crash in progress.

The Silver Ferns have won two of the last three Commonwealth Games titles, but after defeat to Malawi on Sunday and a recent upset against Jamaica, "we are sinking lower and lower" one of their staff tells me.

I imagine the on-air TVNZ crew are a little more upbeat after a tight first half.

England were forced into a change with Beth Cobden - who had been playing solidly at wing defence - as she was replaced by Jade Clarke.

And Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby had seen enough of a disappointing Te Paea Selby-Rickit, and replaced her with young shooter Bailey Mes.

The Kiwis continued to rely heavily on Folau as their scorer, while Housby and Harten, who both play domestic netball in Australia, traded shots in the Roses shooting circle.

England capitalised on the momentum at the end of the half, as they sneaked into a slender two-goal lead.
