    New Zealand 18-18 England

There's plenty of body-on-body action as a real competitive tussle is shaking up between Helen Housby and Silver Ferns captain Katrina Grant.

Some costly errors have crept into the Roses' attacking play, but Chelsea Pitman makes up for a wayward pass with a timely intercept to keep the score on centre pass.

We're level with eight minutes to play before half time.

    Men's 1m springboard (01:07 BST)

Scotland’s James Heatly says he would “love” to honour the memory of his late grandfather by emulating some of his Commonwealth Games success. Qualifying starts in just over half an hour's time.

Sir Peter Heatly won five Commonwealth diving medals in the 1950s – three of them gold – and still ranks fourth on Scotland’s all-time honours list in the competition. The two-time Olympian passed away in 2015, a year after watching his grandson compete at a home Commonwealth Games. The younger Heatly was only 17 at the time and was content to have reached the final in the 1m and 3m springboard events. The Edinburgh diver has set his sights higher this time around, and was the top Commonwealth performer in this event when finishing ninth at last summer’s World Championships.

    Score

Helen Housby sinks a long-range shot to level things up at the end of the first quarter.

It has been nip and tuck all the way. England on top early on with Serena Guthrie and Chelsea Pitman in charge of the centre third, before things slipped a little towards the end.

England coach Tracey Neville is down on her haunches issuing individual instructions to each of her seated squad as a pounding dance remix of Rihanna's Diamonds plays over the tannoy.

This is a tense one already!

England are having significant success in defence, with New Zealand only shooting at 67% and Geva Mentor is focusing most of her efforts in keeping out Maria Folau, who is in imperious form tonight..

Meanwhile, Tracey Neville will be happy with her shooters, as the Roses stand at an impressive 92%.

    Malaysia v Wales (00:30 BST)

Wales will finish third in the pool if they win, but bottom if they lose.

Overall, Australia’s women have won gold at four of the five Commonwealth hockey tournaments and although they are ranked below England and New Zealand, the Hockeyroos will be quietly confident of another title. They have already sealed progression.

    New Zealand 9-8 England

England's early defensive pressure has worked well as New Zealand started tentatively.

At the other end of the court, England's shooters Jo Harten and Helen Housby are continuing their excellent partnership.

But the Silver Ferns have found their rhythm and consolidated a turnover to lead for the first time in the game, midway through the first quarter.

Two interesting things from the teams' introductions onto court.

Firstly, England's goal attack and goal shooter - Helen Housby and Joanne Harten - did not seem to shake hands, as customary, with their markers as they jogged on court. Their Kiwi counterparts didn't seem to bother trying to initiate any pleasantries either.

Secondly, New Zealand goal attack Maria Folau is back to being introduced as such. At least once earlier in the tournament, she was shouted out by her maiden name. Husband and Wallabies star Israel Folau has been courting controversy with his views on homosexuality over here.

First up is qualification, starting now, with the top six progressing to the final at 06:45 BST. Ian and Rex have come up from Christchurch to catch the Silver Ferns games.

Although they admit their team could have done with their support a couple of days back when they suffered a shock defeat to Malawi.

"We've come up for this one, the semis and the final," says Ian. "The others weren't supposed to be as important..."

They are banking on an old-fashioned England bottle job to help keep their girls out of a semi-final against the hot favourites Australian.

"Ah, you know England are going to throw it," Rex concludes confidently.

I believe the kids call this 'relationship goals'.

Roses' wing attack Chelsea Pitman - who was born in Sydney, played for Australia and switched to England in 2015 - has a big support crew in the house.

Boyfriend Shane - an Aussie down to his thongs - has an England flag draped over his shoulder.

Left to right in the photo below are cousin Angie, best friend Kim, Dorset-born dad Derek, Shane and mum Denise.

And back in the UK brother Cameron - who has played rugby league for Barrow and Leigh - has been told to stay up for the match,
