Australia's Mike Shelley ran past stricken Scot Callum Hawkins, who collapsed at the 40km mark of the men's marathon, to take gold and defend his Commonwealth title.

The brutal nature of medal-winning sport encapsulated in one single moment. Afterwards Shelley said he did utter an expletive to himself as overtook Hawkins.

"I wasn't sure what was going on." he added. "I had a couple of mates around Main Beach who said Callum was in a bit of trouble. They told me to keep going and gave me encouragement."

    Adcocks win mixed doubles gold

While it was fantastic to see the emergence of an exciting new mixed doubles pairing for England - in silver medallists Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith - it was fascinating watching Chris Adcock and Ellis playing in that final.

Many in the sport have suggested they could be a phenomenal men’s doubles pairing, but as it stands Ellis is still with Chris Langridge - with whom he won Olympic bronze at Rio 2016.

The pair are also in the men’s doubles final later which means any changes are unlikely in the near future, while Chris Adcock also remains focused on the mixed doubles event.

It would be great to see the two tried out at some stage though - although that may not be until after Tokyo 2020.
