Chris Woakes brings his golden arm to the party as his first ball after replacing Anderson is driven straight to Morgan at cover by Coleman. England would have preferred it to be Coetzer, but they won't grumble. From England's point of view, the quicker Scotland are played out of this game the better.

Ian:, external The boundaries are coming thick and fast. Looks like my hope of an early night has gone.

Kishin Mahtani:, external Scotland surely cannot be thinking of winning this. For the good of ICC, who want to limit the Associates, please lose this game.

Broad is proving the more economical of the England bowlers as he concedes three runs. His second ball draws a pull from Coetzer and a half-hearted appeal from Buttler, which the umpire stares down without response. That is the end of the first powerplay. England were 58-0 at this stage in their innings.

"Once they got to 170-odd for none I would have thought England could have done a bit better. We had a drop in runs when you might expect, with no loss of wickets, that to be raised."

  6. Sco 44-1 (Coleman 5, Coetzer 35)published at 02:52 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

Steady away from Scotland who add three to the total from Anderson's fifth over. The Lancashire bowler has taken the innings' only wicket but gone for 29 from his 30 deliveries.

  7. Sco 41-1 (run-rate 5.12)published at 02:48 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

It is pretty much boundaries or dot-balls for Coetzer, who flicks Broad's first ball down through third-man for his seventh four. He has 35 from 32 balls. You can't fault him or his team - they have nothing to lose here. They might as well swing hard on anything in the slot.

  8. Sco 37-1 (Coetzer 31, Coleman 2)published at 02:44 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

Coetzer is on fire at the moment. He moves to 26 with a lovely back-foot drive through cover and then follows that up with another boundary, through the same area, this time off the front foot. The longer this goes on, the more memories of a certain Kevin O'Brien might start to creep in.

"There's not much margin for error, its a good pitch. Coetzer is middling the ball nicely. If you get through the first overs with the new ball it looks a good pitch to bat on."

Coetzer continues his one-man assault on the England openers with another standing slash that brings him four through backward-point. He may not be moving his feet but he must be seeing it like a football.

Anthony Shaw:, external We scored 303 and that still might not be enough... against Scotland. What a terrible tournament for the Barmy Army.

George Hayward:, external Now time for England to show us what they can pull out of the bag! No silly drops in the field!

  12. Sco 22-1 (Coleman 0, Coetzer 18)published at 02:36 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

There isn't a lot of footwork going on from Coetzer. He is standing and waiting for Anderson to deliver. It keeps him in the game for five balls before the sixth is flicked to deep midwicket for four.

  13. Sco 18-1 (Coetzer 14, Coleman 0)published at 02:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

That wicket has checked Scotland, who are tied up by some tidy stuff from Stuart Broad, who goes for just one run. The Notts man hits the treble 20 with regularity and Coleman has no answer other than a flat bat.

Ian:, external The longer Scotland can keep the run rate up the more confident they will become and more nervous England will be.

Josh Payne:, external I just don't see the logic behind Broad bowling with the new ball.

"MacLeod went for a big shot, quite an ambitious one to play early on. McCullum has ruined everyone's batting technique. Down he came, trying to swat it over mid-off or somewhere having watched McCullum do it, and a bit of early relief for England."

  16. Sco 17-1 (Coetzer 13, Coleman 0)published at 02:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

Freddie Coleman is the new man. He fails to score from his first ball and Scotland's early momentum hits its first hurdle.

Scotland had made a good start but after Coetzer had hammered Anderson through cover for three, the bowler hits back to dismiss his opening partner. MacLeod dances down the track trying to smash the ball away to off a la McCullum but succeeds only in edging the ball to Jos Buttler. That will settle England's nerves somewhat.

Paddy Emmerson:, external The way England have bowled in this World Cup so far, I'm not sure 303 is enough. Fear I'll be waking up to another defeat.

Bernard Whittaker:, external Is Balance really an ODI player ? Stokes has to come into ODI asap. Paul Collingwood has changed Scotland.

Ryan Stokes:, external If England can take a bit of confidence and a win it's a start. Major tournaments in any sport are all about momentum.

  19. Sco 14-0 (Coetzer 9, MacLeod 4)published at 02:23 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

Stuart Broad charges in and Coetzer hammers his first ball back past him for four. Broad rallies and concedes just one more run, whilst also drawing a few false strokes from the Scotland opener. One way or another, you sense this innings is going to be all action.

    Vic Marks
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"I think I've seen enough to say you can't take victory for granted if you're English. England will be extremely disappointed if they can't defend 303. Their bowlers are certainly quicker than the Scots, whether that proves to be an advantage we'll see."
