  1. Sco 9-0 (Coetzer 5, Macleod)published at 02:19 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

Kyle Coetzer and Calum MacLeod are the openers for Scotland. The former (who scored 96 in that warm-up game against West Indies) flicks Jimmy Anderson's third ball (over-pitched on leg-stump through midwicket for four. He then nicks the next ball to second slip, where he is dropped by the diving Ian Bell. MacLeod compounds England's woes by hammering the final ball through cover to the boundary. Not the ideal start for Morgan's men.

Allen Cooper:, external Surely Hales has to come in for Bell or Ballance in the next game? Or maybe Bopara in too and both those out.

Alex Sim:, external Eoin Morgan is always welcome back to Ireland if England lose tonight. He can captain the reserves.

Play is about to resume in Christchurch. The England players are poised to take their place in the field. If you're still awake, you might want to hang in to see how this innings starts. It could well be an uncomfortable one for England unless they get a grip early on.

  5. How's stat?!published at 01:57 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

"From England's point of view a very satisfying situation, After getting beaten up by Australia and savaged by New Zealand a number of players got in. Moeen Ali played particularly well and Bell and Morgan made runs.

"It's a good total, a winning total, you can say they should have got 350 but that's different, if they'd been on a winning run they probably would have. But the jitters have gone, the banana skin gone, Scotland will have to play out of their skin and England would have to bowl terrible."

Rich:, external Yes, it's 300+, but difficult to imagine any of the other Test nations scoring fewer against this bowling attack today.

Rowland P:, external Part of Bell's job is to support Mo's attacking stylings. Could have scored quicker himself but a good partnership is valuable.

"On the face of it, 303 is perfectly acceptable from England, but the devil is in the detail. With all 10 wickets in hand, they managed only 131 from the final 20 overs of the innings (imagine posting 131 in a T20 game) and, from 172-0, they are about 40 runs short of what they should have achieved. Still, you suspect it's too many for Scotland."

Josh Davey ended the pick of Scotland's bowlers, with 4-68 from his 10 overs, helped by those two wickets in two balls in his final over. There was a wicket apiece for Iain Wardlaw, Alasdair Evans, Majid Haq and Richie Berrington. Scotland will be happy with the way they were able to hole England back after Morgan's men had set up what looked like a huge score in the first half of their innings. Scotland's batting is stronger than their bowling and they fell just three runs short of West Indies' 313 in a warm-up game 11 days ago. Can they pull this off? We will find out soon...

    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Scotland's Matthew Cross now has 28 dismissals in 13 ODIs as wicketkeeper. His dismissals per match rate of 2.16 is the highest of anyone with 25 or more dismissals. Second is South Africa's Quinton de Kock with 1.72 (64 in 37 ODIs)."

Chris Kent:, external England can't win on this game, even if they smashed 500 it would be due to an inferior bowling line up from Scotland!

Rob Porter:, external Bar Cook, this is pretty much England's Test line-up. Selectors need to realise there is an important difference between formats.

  15. Eng 303-8 (Broad 0, Finn 1)published at 01:45 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2015

Davey fails in his hat-trick attempt as he concedes a leg bye. The new batsmen Stuart Broad and Steven Finn are unable to add much more to the total, despite a couple of hefty swings. England have a 300+ total, but it is way short of what they could (and should) have scored.

Woakes follows next ball and it is another skier for Mommsen (an even higher one this time) but he makes no mistake by running round from extra-cover to get under and claim it. I should add that a wide from the first ball gave England their 300th run. For now, though, Davey is on a hat-trick...

"Morgan played quite nicely. He has good hands, can slog it and improvise, but he's had a run of low scores and confidence with him is bound to be down. That will do him the world of good."

The England skipper's innings comes to an end as he skies one off Davey and is caught by Mommsen. It has been a useful innings, both for the team and himself. It might not be 50, but it is a handy 46.
