  1. WI 35-1 (Gayle 20*, Samuels 13*)published at 04:08 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Chatara, all right-arm in his action, is beavering away here but Samuels is taking no chances, showing the full face of the bat with a couple of back-foot defensive strokes. Just two more from the over - I wonder when the Jamaican pair will look to step up into third gear or above.

"The opening bowlers for Zimbabwe have bowled well to Gayle, he is starting to move his feet well. This attack probably suits him - they pitch the ball up and don't have the pace of some of the other teams."

  3. WI 33-1published at 04:04 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Still plenty of seats available at the Manyuka Oval - the good folk of the Australian Capital Territory are doing their best, but the atmosphere doesn't seem to be quite at the level it was for the last game in Canberra, the Afghanistan-Bangladesh showdown. Right-arm seamer Panyangara falls over in his delivery stride - shades of Steven Finn when he first broke into the England side. Let's hope he doesn't start clipping the stumps. Two singles from the over.

Former England batsman Mark Butcher:, external Gayle dodges a bullet on review. Ridiculous that you lose a review when the ball is clipping the stumps.

  5. WI 31-1 (Gayle 18*, Samuels 12*)published at 04:00 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Gayle moves his score up to 11 with a firm cover-driven four, but if you've woken up hoping for some Windies fireworks, they're not quite cranking it up to 11 in Spinal Tap terms just yet. But Gayle has the Windies fans on their feet as he seemingly effortlessly lofts a four over square leg, before lofting one high over Elton Chigumbura at mid-off - the fielder can't quite get there - and they run a couple more. A single takes him to 18 from 16 balls - that's West Indies' best over so far.

  6. WI 20-1published at 03:56 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Panyangara has his head in his hands as he swings one between Samuels' back-foot drive and his back pad. When Samuels does connect, it's a firm drive past the diving bowler's left hand for four. He has 12 from 18 balls, Gayle has seven from 10. The anthem may be "Rally round the West Indies", but it's "Rebuild round the West Indies" for now.

  8. WI 16-1 (Gayle 7*, Samuels 8*)published at 03:51 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

That's more like the Chris Gayle we've come to know - he takes a large stride down the pitch and lofts Chatara over mid-on for four. Not quite out of the middle of his enormous bat, but it'll do for now.

  9. WI 10-1published at 03:47 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Panyangara, buoyed by his wicket in the opening over, continues to bowl a teasing line on a good length just outside off stump. Samuels is watchful, waiting for the ball to hit - and it comes when Panyangara strays with his line and Samuels smashes one from outside off stump back past the bowler for four.

  11. WI 6-1 (Gayle 2*, Samuels 3*)published at 03:43 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Tendai Chatara - Zimbabwe's fastest bowler, according to Neil Manthorp on TMS - takes the second over, and he has an interesting bowling action - barely using his left arm at all, as he goes through his delivery stride. Still, it's a style which has brought him 31 ODI wickets in 23 games. Samuels helps himself to a couple of singles, while Gayle looks all at sea, struggling to time the ball at all.

  12. WI 3-1published at 03:39 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

So Zimbabwe have used up their one review, but Gayle nearly goes next ball as he comes close to edging to the keeper - while the over ends with another false shot as Gayle miscues it into the air, safely, wide of mid-on. They run two. A first over to remember for Panyangara.

  13. Not outpublished at 03:38 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

It hits the tall Jamaican left-hander's right pad on the knee-roll - is that a clue it's going over? In fact it's "umpire's call" for height - umpire Steve Davis's "not out" call is upheld. Gayle survives.

  14. Umpire reviewpublished at 03:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Marlon Samuels is the new batsman, and he nearly plays his first ball onto his stumps - a streaky inside edge brings him a single. Chris Gayle faces for the first time, and is hit on the pad as he attempts a languid force to leg - Zimbabwe call for a review!

"Panyangara bowls a very, very consistent off-stump line and Dwayne Smith just missed a straight one; there might be a little bit of swing. It's been a hundred games as an opening batsman and Smith averages just under 20."

Dwayne Smith goes second ball - missing a straight delivery from right-arm seamer Tinyashe Panyangara which sails between bat and pad - a gap so wide it will have the Windies' coaching staff tearing their hair out.

Smith's oft-quoted ODI average of 18.85 will drop even more...

Looks like we're starting a minute or two late... which isn't helped by the compulsory "countdown" from various players on the scoreboard. Dwayne Smith and Chris Gayle opening for the Windies.

We're ready to go. Zimbabwe are in the field, looking to end a run in which they have lost all five World Cup meetings with the Caribbean side.

It's been a colourful World Cup so far, but one particular head-to-head duel today could catch the eye. West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell and Zimbabwe leg-spinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi sport two of the most noticeable haircuts in the tournament - both mohicans. I pity the fool who would mess with either of them...
