"Ahmadi has played some great shots, and some unorthodox ones. He's given himself room to lash the ball through the off side a couple of times and inbetween times he's watched the ball well."

  2. Afg 85-2 (126 required for victory)published at 03:34 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Oh, so close! Ahmadi steers a short ball from the returning Wardlaw just a few inches over the outstretched hand of Haq at slip. That would have been a key wicket for Scotland. Instead, the batsman remains at the crease to take a single next ball and reach his 50 from 48 balls. It is his fifth ODI half-century from 22 matches and if he sticks around much longer he will take this game away from Scotland.

"A few things I've learned on a lap of the ground:

    • It's very warm in the sunshine, but freezing in the shade

    • A grass bank should be mandatory at every cricket ground, so civilised, so many options - sit/lie/snooze/stand at the back/have your own game of cricket

    • Wherever you are in the world, there's a group of drunken idiots

    • There are some Notts County fans here."

  4. Champagne moment - England winpublished at 03:28 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

England Women have beaten New Zealand to level their five-match ODI series at 2-2. Charlotte Edwards (89 not out) and Sarah Taylor (64 not out) put on more than 150 together to help England to a nine-wicket victory in pursuit of New Zealand's 168 all out.

Haq grimaces as a well-timed sweep from Shenwari brings him a boundary. The spinner responds well, though, to keep the Afghanistan number four at the striker's end, despite his best attempts at another suicidal single that again sees Ahmadi send him scampering back to the crease.

Lots of empty seats at the MCG, which is understandable given it does seat nigh on 100,000. There are a few pockets of blue and green supporters helping belt out the national anthems. As for the teams, Dinesh Chandimal comes in for the injured Jeevan Mendis in the Sri Lankan middle order. Bangladesh are unchanged.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"Ahmadi is racing along. He naturally hits the ball really hard. Shenwari is trying to provide the glue and is doing a good job. Scotland captain Preston Mommsen has now been forced to turn to his fifth-choice bowler Richie Berrington who is more a batsman who bowls a bit. This is the weakness in the Scottish team."

  8. Afg 74-2 (Shenwari 13, Ahmadi 45)published at 03:24 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

This is where Scotland struggle; they simply don't have the strength in depth in their bowling to maintain a consistent threat. They turn to Berrington, who with the best will in the world is gentle medium pace at best. It is a decent first over, but one that Ahmadi sees through with ease and plunders for four runs to take him closer to 50.

  9. Bangladesh boosted by Brisbane rainpublished at 03:22 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Bangladesh meet Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground knowing that the weather gods have already smiled kindly upon them during this World Cup.

Having picked up an unexpected point when their match against Australia at the Gabba was called off as a no result after heavy rain in Brisbane, Bangladesh lie in third place in Pool A with three points following their impressive 105-run win over Afghanistan.

Victory over Sri Lanka would mean that one further win from the Pool A games against New Zealand, England or Scotland would see them progress to the quarter-finals.

  10. Afg 70-2 (Ahmadi 42, Shenwari 12)published at 03:20 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

You can see the temptation to Ahmadi, as he considers taking a stride to Haq and planting him down the ground. He resists, though, and the off-spinner goes for a trio of singles.

  11. England women updatepublished at 03:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Charlotte Edwards and Sarah Taylor look to be steering England to a commanding victory over hosts New Zealand in the fourth one-day international in Lincoln.

Captain Edwards, leading England for the 201st time, has 49 and Taylor 47 in England's 107-1, chasing 168 for victory. Heather Knight is the only wicket to fall - she was dismissed for five with the score on 11.

  12. Afg 67-2 (Evans 2-20 off 5)published at 03:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Evans remains in the Scotland attack and ruins his otherwise efficient over with a short one which Shenwari cuts away from four to the off-side boundary. He then chucks his last down leg for a wide before beating the outside edge with an excellent extra delivery.

It is delicately poised now. A wicket will bring Scotland firmly into the game, but they don't have the kind of total to allow this pair to settle.

  13. Mathews wary of Bangladesh threatpublished at 03:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Sri Lanka were well beaten by New Zealand in their first Pool A match and were indebted to Mahela Jayawardene's century in the second as they laboured to a four-wicket win over Afghanistan.

"This will be a pressure match for all of us," Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews said.

"Bangladesh have a good set of players and we have to take all their batsmen and bowlers seriously."

  14. Postpublished at 03:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

    Warren Lees
Ex-New Zealand wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special

"Scotland can't continue giving away singles so they don't have to bowl at Ahmadi. Sooner or later they have to get him out, especially with such an average score to defend."

  15. Afg 62-2 (Ahmadi 40, Shenwari 7)published at 03:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2015

Spinner Majid Haq is into the attack and the change almost produces a wicket as Shenwari flicks one to square leg ands sets off only to have to scamper back and just make his ground before the bails are whipped off from a throw. Scotland will be encouraged that there are still some nerves on show from Afghanistan.

David in Spain: Re 6 overs... Excuse the high horse, but Len Hutton had no reputation for swinging away at anything (the opposition) had to offer. Rather he drove you and drove you, classically through the covers.

Very true David. Classy as he was, Sir Len was probably not built for this modern swashbuckling form of cricket. Saying that, he could probably still do a job in the current England side!

Evans drops his length too short and is punished by Shenwari, who flashes a solid back-foot drive through cover for four. After the two-wicket salvo from Scotland, Afganistan are slowly steadying the ship.
