It's a fairly subdued home crowd at Edgbaston. They know it is not a brilliant T20 score, but it is a total that has won games before.

  2. END OF INNINGSpublished at 20 overs

    Birmingham Bears 131-6 (Javid 51)

Laurie Evans is run out for 18 off the final ball, but he's given his side a chance with those two sixes and a four off David Willey's last over.

He looks a bit disgruntled as he walks off. Probably thinking what could have been if he'd batted for another five or six overs.

Where was Laurie Evans for the majority of this innings?!

He strikes David Willey down the ground for four before smashing him over mid-off for another maximum.

Clean striking of the highest order.

  4. 6 runs

Laurie Evans smashes sixpublished at 18.3 overs

    Birmingham Bears 120-5 (Javid 51, Evans 7)

That's a tremendous strike from Laurie Evans.

He clears his front leg and smashes David Willey over mid-wicket for a maximum.

  5. 50 runs

FIFTY FOR ATEEQ JAVID (49 balls, 3 fours, 1 six)published at 18.5 overs

    Birmingham Bears 109-5 (Evans 1)

    That's a first T20 half-century for Ateeq Javid.

It's been an important one too, helping the Bears recover from 14-4.

He'll be looking for a big final over though, just to give something for his side to defend.

  6. wicket

WICKET Clarke (b Kleinveldt 41)published at 18.2 overs

    Birmingham Bears 107-5 (Javid 49)

You'd have to say Rikki Clarke has been put out his misery there.

The experienced all-rounder simply could not find the middle throughout his innings and it comes to an end when he plays an ugly swipe across the line and the ball takes out his off stump.

Rory Kleinveldt now has two wickets.

  7. Birmingham Bears 106-4 (Clarke 41, Javid 48)published at 18 overs

Ateeq Javid is beginning to motor now.

He clears his front leg and swats Olly Stone's second ball of the over back over his head for four.

Rikki Clarke then smashes the ball back at the young paceman who can't cling onto a difficult chance.

10 came from that over. A couple of big ones needed now.

  8. 6 runs

Ateeq Javid hits a six!published at 17 overs

This is what we've been waiting for!

Ateeq Javid smashes Azharullah over the square leg boundary for a maximum.

Birmingham Bears will need plenty more of those in the final three overs.

I count there's only been five boundaries in the innings so far and no sixes. It's been hard work.

16 overs gone, just five boundaries scored. This isn't what T20 cricket's about, but Northants won't care!

Rikki Clarke tries to smash Olly Stone over square leg but gets a huge top edge which falls just short of David Willey.

    It's pretty quiet at Edgbaston.

  11. Birmingham Bears 75-4 (Clarke 29, Javid 29)published at 15 overs

Just as it looks like Birmingham Bears are beginning to open their shoulders, it's another tight over from the Steelbacks.

It's a super over from spinner Graeme White at this stage as just six come from it.

He gave them nothing to hit.

If Birmingham could get to 140 that might be competitive as the pitch looks a little tricky to me.

  13. Birmingham Bears 69-4 (Clarke 28, Javid 25)published at 14 overs

Is this the start of the batting onslaught from Birmingham Bears?

Ateeq Javid smashes Shahid Afridi over mid-wicket for a one bounce four.

Rikki Clarke then ramps the Pakistan bowler over the wicketkeeper's head for another boundary.

    11 from the over.

  14. Birmingham Bears 58-4 (Clarke 22, Javid 20)published at 13 overs

Batting finally appears to be getting a little easier with Rikki Clarke and Ateeq Javid both getting their eyes in.

Graeme White comes into the attack and concedes seven runs - but again no boundaries.

    Something has to give now.

  15. Birmingham Bears 51-4 (Clarke 17, Javid 18)published at 12 overs

Shahid Afridi doesn't really turn the ball, but that doesn't matter.

It's his pace and mystery which make him such a fine bowler.

He goes for just four runs from the 12th.

If you're just joining us, you've missed a simply staggering start to the Birmingham Bears' innings.

Varun Chopra's men lost four wickets in their first four overs and slumped to 14-4.

The carnage was led by David Willey who took three wickets in his first eight balls.

That's the sort of innovation Birmingham are going to have to show if they're going to set some kind of target.

There's simply no respite here for the Bears.

Azharullah comes into the attack and finds his line and length straight away.

But Rikki Clarke relieves some of the tension with a ramp shot for four off his final ball. Finally a boundary!

  19. Birmingham Bears 41-4 (Clarke 11, Javid 14)published at 10 overs

Erm, still no boundaries for the Bears from Shahid Afridi's second over.

But don't forget, they still have two big hitters in Laurie Evans and Chris Woakes waiting in the wings.

Surely they'd be delighted with 140 from here?

  20. Birmingham Bears 38-4 (Clarke 8, Javid 14)published at 9 overs

It's not quite panic stations for Birmingham Bears yet, but they'll have to start hitting some boundaries soon.

It's another tight over from 21-year-old paceman Olly Stone, as he concedes just two runs from it.
