That early noughties dance music chat has thrown up some interesting revelations - my colleague Chris Bevan says he was a 'technical adviser' for the video to Fragma's Toca's Miracle. Basically, he worked at the leisure centre where it was filmed, if we dig a little deeper.

England advance their score by six runs, a mixture of neat ones and twos.

Harry Cunningham: So this is the Hales so many have been calling for? Just as bad as I remember him being, strangely.

Reid Warren: It only takes three good partnerships to put on 300 runs. We need batsmen in the top order to anchor the innings not sloggers.

Anwar Ali sticks out his bum when he sets off to deliver the ball, but his good figures are starting to be damaged by a rampant Eoin Morgan who whacks four down the ground and then, three balls later, belts four through the off side. The guy in charge of the PA system greets the boundaries with some early noughties dance music - Better Off Alone by Alice Deejay if you were wondering.

It is an oddity that yesterday they were all talking at the press conference about Younus Khan being back in the squad, and now he's retiring. But he's a popular figure from here to Barnsley.

Shoaib Malik got his career-best Test score (245) in the recent series and also recorded his best Test bowling figures. So what did he do? Retire.

Younus Khan make his ODI return in this match after making a lot of noise about his lack of recent 50-over action. So what did he do? Retire.

Some peculiar timed retirements there. Can you name any more? I suspect there's plenty of boxers we can include in this chatter.

Five from the over, Malik sweeping for four.

"That was dangerous. He timed it well but wasn't quite balanced as he hit the shot, so it went in the air. It was a fantastic effort."

You know what, James (see tweet below)... Alex Hales played an Ian Bell-like innings today. He was almost out before he got out but inbetween he played some really nice shots - the best being an on-drive for four.

Eoin Morgan continues to try and take every scoring opportunity, clipping four past a diving mid-wicket fielder and to the boundary.

Jonathan France: If Hales has a bad series - which will count towards him opening in Tests, where do we go then in terms on an opener?

James Millerchip: Anybody picking up the telephone to Ian Bell yet?

  11. Eng 27-3 (Morgan 12, Taylor 5)published at 7 overs

James Taylor is playing an interesting game against Mohammad Irfan - a man who is almost two whole feet taller than him. Rather than playing in an orthodox manner, he shuffles across his stumps and gets fully behind and over the ball. Cuts down on the risk of an edge behind.

  14. Eng 24-3 (Anwar 3-0-17-2)published at 6 overs

It took Pakistan 19 balls to take three England wickets this morning. At the same ground in the Test series, it took them 646 balls. Remind me why Alastair Cook doesn't play ODI cricket again...

Cook, by the way, scored 323 runs in four ODIs in the UAE - hitting two centuries at the top of the order.

Back to action out in the middle, James Taylor looks in good touch as he leans into a leggy delivery from Anwar Ali and clips four through mid-wicket.

Matt Chahuan: The Ashes win for England was a huge false dawn and seriously flattered to deceive.

Eoin Morgan was talking quite graphically the other day about when he was hit on the head, so I think he'll get some short stuff here.

The pitch for today's game looks like concrete which was laid yesterday. The dark, wet-like colour to it makes it seems as though there should be a few signs around it asking people to refrain from walking on it. Speaking of which, Mohammad Irfan is given a warning from the umpire when he follows through on to the danger zone (a straight strip from wicket to wicket). Maiden over.

  20. Eng 19-3 (Morgan 8, Taylor 1)published at 4 overs

James Taylor is the next man to make his way to the middle. Behind him is an out of form Jos Buttler, the dashing but unreliable Moeen Ali and then we're into the bowlers. These two need to still be there in 30 overs' time if England are to have any chance today.

Eoin Morgan cuts Anwar Ali for four. He's not a man to take a backward step.
