"England are in a massive pickle. They have five batsmen and a lot of all-rounders and they have already lost three big wickets. There was a flicker of movement. You bat on these surfaces as if there's no movement and the slightest bit has you in trouble."

You know when it's not going your way on a computer game and you pull the plug to reset and start again? Can you do that in cricket?

Pakistan have pulled the plug on England's top three - Alex Hales the latest to get an early shower when he edges to a juggling Younus Khan at first slip.

  6. Eng 14-2 (England won toss)published at 3 overs

Mohammad Irfan, standing at 7ft 1in, is a frightening prospect as he thunders in from over the wicket bowling left-arm quick. There's not much in the way of a run-up, more of a giant-like amble, but he's certainly a different challenge for England.

Alex Hales gets away with an edge behind which doesn't carry, then capitalises on his let-off by driving three through the covers. Good shot.

The overs end with England getting lucky again as Eoin Morgan goes on the hook and the ball runs off his forearm and for four runs.

The umpires are a couple of new ones for me - Ahsan Raza of Pakistan, who's a bit of an Aleem Dar lookalike, and he's a bit taller than Johan Cloete of South Africa.

Eoin Morgan is out to bat before we've had two overs bowled in the match. The skipper won't have expected that when he won the toss half an hour ago.

It looked very out. It looked out-er than the technology gave it. There's not anything misbehaving out there, but England are 7-2.

The third umpire sees that the ball is just about hitting leg stump (umpire's call) and a clearly disappointed Joe Root trudges off. An awful start for England.

There's no Snicko and no Hotspot here, so you've got to be pretty creative [to overturn a decision] here. There's nothing that we can see in terms of an inside edge, but there's no way of detecting it.

This match is rattling along at some pace - England have lost another, with Anwar Ali hitting Joe Root in front. Could be sliding down? The batsman reviews after the umpire raises his finger.

  14. Eng 7-1 (Hales 7, Root 0)published at 1.2 overs

They say you're in good form when you're playing the on-drive and that's the shot Alex Hales plays first up - and the ball whistles to the boundary. Three more follow when he right-hander clips Anwar Ali into the leg side.

I was talking to a Pakistani taxi driver here yesterday who said he'd love to come to the game but he had to sleep before working a 14-15-hour day. That's the raw fact of people who come here to work.

It must be difficult to pick the ball up from a seven-foot bowler, the ball must be coming down from nearly 10 feet high.

We're under way in the UAE, where England have lost a wicket to the second ball of the day. Jason Roy played down the wrong line to a straight one from giant fast bowler Mohammad Irfan and has his stumps rearranged.

A wicket maiden to begin with and Joe Root has joined Alex Hales at the crease.

My memory of the Test here last time here was Monty Panesar leading England off, high-fiving everyone and the team seemed convinced he had bowled them to victory. It was followed, two-and-a-half hours later, by Monty walking off, bat in hand, after England had been bowled out chasing a low total.
