  1. Pak 122-4 (Hafeez 69, Babar 3)published at 27 overs

Big appeal from England for a leg-before against new batsman Babar Azam. Not out, but England are desperate for another breakthrough. They feel one more and they're in the game.

They won't win while Mohammad Hafeez is batting though. He again punches Moeen Ali through the covers for four. Superb timing, use of the feet and placement.

Lancashire spun their way to the T20 title this year with Stephen Parry, who finished as top wicket-taker in the tournament, and Arron Lilley showing great control to strangle teams in the middle overs. It's exactly what this England ODI side could do with, if only they were willing to pick specialists.

The massive, curved roof on the main stand at this ground in Abu Dhabi is lit up with dozens of spotlights - the type of which you'd have in your kitchen. It's quite fetching in the night sky, but also has the look of a dodgy nightclub ceiling. I can't make up my mind if I like it. Just one from Adil Rashid's latest, much better, set of six.

Keanooooo: Irfan bowled like a dream. Maybe England need some height. What's Boyd Rankin up to? #ironictweet, external

If you didn't hear the news last week, Rankin is believed to be considering a return to Ireland, for whom he would be eligible to play from 17 January.

  5. Pak 116-4 (Hafeez 65, Azam 1)published at 25 overs

The new Pakistan batsman is Babar Azam, a man with two first-class centuries before his 21st birthday. He admires from the non-striker's end when Mohmmad Hafeez leans into a beautiful cover drive. Got all the skills, has Hafeez.

"That was really odd. Moeen Ali couldn't believe his luck there. England really needed that wicket, but Pakistan are still comfortable."

Jonathan Agnew adds: "England have an absolute bonus there. Shoaib Malik has given his wicket away."

    Malik c Roy b Moeen 26 (Pak 111-4)

That came from nowhere. Pakistan were bobbing along rather nicely and then Shoaib Malik chips an innocuous delivery into the leg side where Jason Roy takes a diving catch at wide mid-on.

Considering the way Stuart Broad bowled in the Test series, I think it's too early to rule him out of the ODI side as England appear to have done. Why waste all that experience if it can help? There's nobody in England better at bowling cutters. Granted, he wasn't brilliant in the World Cup.

Rashid continues and bowls five good balls. The final one of the over is a half-tracker and gets the treatment. Malik pulls to the boundary.

Why would a Sri Lankan or Indian team want an English spinner? Their club spinners will be higher quality and they're probably not interested in the development of English cricket. When English counties and clubs take an overseas player it's because they increase the quality of their team. An English spinner in the subcontinent wouldn't do that.

  13. Pak 104-3 (partnership 63 off 80 balls)published at 23 overs

    Has Moeen Ali gone backwards?

In 2015 he has 32 wickets at an average of 45, while his ODI return is 17 wickets at 37.

Pakistan are easily knocking him around the park here. Another two chipped form the target.

Josh Arbon: Our spinners really aren't up to much. Good to see Topley fulfilling some potential though!

Harru O'haye: No matter what the conditions are in the second ODI, Five seamers- no spinners. Don't even bowl Moeen if picked as batsman.

No answers from me, Stephan. More questions.

Like, will England lose this series 4-0 and fall below Bangladesh in the world rankings?

There's not been much to shout about today. Reece Topley excepted, the bowling attack has looked pretty toothless. A mixed bag of an over from Adil Rashid, just one coming from it.

Pete Roberts: Couldn't Joe Root just have a square on his back rather than a number... square root!

  17. Pak 101-3published at 21 overs

Joe Root previously wore number five in ODI cricket, but I'm getting reports that he's now sporting 66. I haven't seen the back of his shirt, so can't confirm. Cue the 'Root 66' jokes. 66 was the number of Graeme Swann. How long does a player have to be gone from the side before you can pinch his number? Maybe Marc Higginson has the answer...

50 for Mohammad Hafeezpublished at 20 overs

    Pak 92-3

Like James Taylor earlier today, Mohammad Hafeez goes to 50 with a maximum. Whereas Taylor was on the dance, Hafeez is tucking into the Adil Rashid buffet. A long hop, pulled miles for six. You can't help but feel that Pakistan will win this at a canter if Hafeez remains at the crease.
