  1. Pak 84-3 (Hafeez 45, Malik 16)published at 19 overs

Hafeez looks in good touch here. He's driven straight off front and back foot and punished the spinners when they have erred in length. Malik, on the other hand, is agricultural, dancing and swiping Moeen to cow corner for four. One batsman a power mover, the other a piano player.

I enjoyed Strauss' comments re English spinners going to Sri Lanka & India to play, it's not enough to expect them to learn their trade here in Blighty on unhelpful pitches, send them abroad and let them learn from specialist coaches & fellow spinners in helpful conditions, which would also help them prepare for tours such as this one. Counties & the ECB need to be more proactive in this area.

Oh, Moeen. What's going on out at the point boundary? Diving to stop a Malik cut shot, he goes down in installments, tipping the ball around the post and over the boundary for four. To get out of trouble, he lies on the ground with a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, Rashid asks for lbw, but Hafeez has just got some bat on it.

"The pitches at Northampton used to turn, which is why the spinners at Northants weren't fazed when they moved up to international cricket. Their names? Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar."

Moeen on, so spin from both ends. No catchers, no hint of turn just yet. England had a decent start with the ball, but one decent Pakistan partnership could win this for the hosts. Are they likely to fold in the same way England did. Tidy start from Moeen, only one from it.

Dominic Bate: Any pressure being built up by the seamers is released immediately by Adil "Pieman" Rashid.

  7. Pak 69-3 (Hafeez 35, Malik 11)published at 16 overs

Rashid does get another go after drinks, giving it some loop to land the ball in the right half. There's a slip waiting for the edge, but Rashid has now gone from too short to too full. Three singles. No danger, but better from Rashid.

Still Woakes, urging the ball to move off the straight. Nothing doing, this experienced pair of Pakistan batsmen able to gather the singles that are on offer. Maybe time for Moeen? England's issue is they are without a sixth frontline option. There's a bit of Joe Root, but not a great deal of slack if one of the main five doesn't do the business.

    Pak 63-3

Hmmm, not a great start by Adil Rashid, who serves up a pie of a long hop that Hafeez is only too happy to belt to the boundary. When a man goes to cow corner, Rashid drags another down, with Hafeez almost holing out. The fielder, who I think is Alex Hales, leaps, but can't get a hand on it. A chance? Not really. It would have been a gift. Too short from Rashid.

  14. Pak 52-3 (target 217)published at 13 overs

Woakes hasn't found the movement that Topley has, so the ball is simply angled in from the right-armer, almost on to the middle of the bat. Steady accumulation for Pakistan, five from it. Time for some spin...

  16. Pak 47-3published at 12 overs

Ooofff, almost another for England. Hafeez gives Shoaib a "yes-no" calling for a single, then changing his mind. Shoaib turns and looks to be a goner if Rashid's can hit the stumps from mid-on. Missed, but not by much. Pakistan jittery in pursuit of this modest target.

On the subject of my bad call on Topley-Plunkett, I couldn't believe it when Graeme Swann got a go in the England Test side. I also wasn't so sure that Joe Root was going to be any good, either. Maybe I'm in the wrong job. Woakes to Hafeez, serving up a long hop that is pulled for four.

One old-timer replaced by another, Shoaib Malik coming to the crease. Topley, by the way, has 2-15 from five overs. Those wondering why he was in side the ahead of Plunkett (me), well and truly put in their box.
