  2. Pak 12-1 (Topley 1-0-4-1)published at 2 overs

Azhar talked with Bilal about reviewing, but was right not to. It pitched around middle and would have hit middle halfway up. Some all sorts from Topley, but I guess he'd have swapped the three wides for a wicket. Mohammad Hafeez is the new man.

"I think he got correct advice from his partner there. It swung a fraction, he played around his front pad and it hit him on the front pad on the half-volley and it's not going to go over the top when Topley's 6ft 7ins tall. A glimmer of hope after a frustrating over, and a little bit of movement for the left-armers."

Azhar lbw Topley 8 (Pak 12-1)

Gone! The early wicket England needed. Whereas Reece Topley was struggling with the ball swinging down the leg side, this is perfect, pitching on and swinging back towards the stumps. Azhar Ali is trapped on the front pad, plumb in front. A first ODI wicket for Topley.

  5. Pak 12-0published at 1.4 overs

Two left-armers to open for England, Reece Topley getting the edge of Bilal Asif's bat, only for the ball to fall short of the the two men in the slips. Other than that, the radar is woefully off for Topley with no fewer than three wides. And then...

OneMoreWicket: What's baffling is the exciting cricket vs NZ early summer team has four players omitted from it & only one via injury.

  7. Pak 8-0 (target 217)published at 1 over

Yep, as Victor observes, the second slip is immediately removed, leaving a sole grabber and a shortish mid-wicket. Willey is looking for swing back into the right-handed Azhar, but gets too wide and is driven through the covers for another boundary. Ideal start for Pakistan.

"It's a good start for Pakistan, not a great ball on leg stump and it's away for four. Second slip is removed after one ball, which is never a good start."

Erm.... First ball, leg stump, four through mid-wicket.

So Andrew Strauss says England have some ground to make up in one-day cricket. They definitely have ground to make up in this particular one-day game. If they manage to defend 216, it will be some effort.

"The T20 competitions like the IPL and Big Bash, especially as an overseas player, put you under pressure. You are expected to stand up, deliver and win the game for your team. That's a great experience for a player."

"It's important we are honest with ourselves about our one-day cricket. Often the one-day series at the back of a tour, when I was playing, we weren't as focused as we might have been and were tired too. Maybe it should be more separated. We've got some ground to make up, but that's exciting."

What's going to happen between now and next winter's tour of Bangladesh and India?

"The Lions' performance programme will be doing a lot of work in the UAE over the next week or so. It's mainly a spin camp, skills based, and our spinners will work with Daniel Vettori. I think we have to get people to give our spinners advice, more about the game and how you develop in your thinking as much as your technique. It can be a game of cat and mouse between batsman and bowler. It's my job to look 12 months into the future and make sure we are not having this conversation when we're in Bangladesh."

"We need to focus on how we can encourage counties to produce pitches that aren't just good for seamers. Pitches that encourage X-factor bowlers - not just spinners, but bowlers who bowl at 95mph. They are the type of bowlers we need if we are to be successful away from home."
