"Any captain would say there 'I don't mind if it goes for four, go for the catch'. A great effort from Alex Hales."

  2. SA 22-1 (de Kock 7, du Plessis 11)published at 7 overs

There's balls squirting everywhere as first Faf du Plessis and then Quinton de Kock mis-time the ball and it balloons short of the waiting fielders either side of the wicket.

Du Plessis, in particular, is keen to get a handle on the scoring and chips the ball over mid-wicket and Alex Hales, running in from the boundary, can't get there for the catch and it runs for four. A good over for the hosts ends with a tickle to the fine leg boundary.

  4. SA 12-1 (Willey 3-2-2-0)published at 6 overs

David Willey is bowling very, very well here. He's bowling a tight line and length which, combined with his left-arm angle and deceptive pace, is troubling the batsmen. Just one from the over.

Anthony Davison: Topley of the morning to you. 10-1 off 5 overs ... 2 maidens... I thought the Test series had finished?

  6. SA 10-1published at 5 overs

Reece Topley strains every sinew of his 6ft 7ins frame to try and pick up a return catch from Quinton de Kock which falls just short of the mid-off fielder. He can't quite get there and after another edge drops short of second slip, the left-handed de Kock finally unfurls a cover drive for four. That's better.

Stuart MItchell: Ahh bliss, cricket then rugby for my viewing pleasure, not sure about anyone else but not moving from my TV for most of the day.

"South Africa's Chris Morris has just gone for a million dollars in the IPL auction, so someone's either made a mistake there, or they've made a mistake here by dropping him today. They should do some work with him, as they've not had a proper all-rounder since Kallis retired."

Richie O'Hara: Lovely start, I think Topley is a cracking bowler, brings variety, too. Next wicket, please!

  10. SA 4-1 (de Kock 0, du Plessis 0)published at 4 overs

David Willey is bowling fast, full and getting a hint of movement both ways. There's a snap to his action and a strut to his demeanour. England have got South Africa by the throat at the moment. The Proteas are barely getting the ball off the square. Another maiden. That's 18 dot balls and just one scoring shot from 24.

"In the last 10 ODI matches played here, the average score is 246."

  12. SA 4-1 (Topley 2-0-4-1)published at 3 overs

There's a touch of the Milk Tray Man about Reece Topley, who is tall, dark and handsome. He's delivered England a sweet start, that's for sure. Wicket maiden. Every ball lands on a sixpence.

"Watch the footwork, there's none at all. His left foot is still on the batting crease, it never moved an inch. He's sleepy, those feet aren't dancing."

Gotcha! Reece Topley bowls fast and full and Hashim Amla's off pole is removed from the ground, the ball striking via the pad. A perfect delivery.

"The wind gets up enormously here. It's a windy city. Several times I've been chasing my hat down the road, and the hat and I were both nearly run over."

  16. SA 4-0 (Amla 4, de Kock 0)published at 2 overs

David Willey shares the new ball, meaning England start with two tall left-arm quicks. How times change. Alan Mullally was born 20 years too soon. He'd be a franchise star now. Maybe.

Big appeal from Willey when he thinks de Kock has edged behind, but the sound came from the batsman hitting the pitch with his bat. Maiden over.

"Amla's feet were all over the place there. Come on son, you've got to dance, you've got to move your feet."

  18. SA 4-0 (Amla 4, de Kock 0)published at 1 over

Reece Topley ambles in to the background sound of a lively, little band. He spoils a very tidy opening over with a slider down leg which Hashim Amla helps on its way for four. Relief for Amla, who was the subject of a muted leg-before appeal a couple of balls earlier.

Here we go then. Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla will get us under way - facing the left arm pace of Reece Topley.
