11:35Alex Hales, if he had carried his bat, would have been only the third Englishman to do so in an ODI. He would have followed Nick Knight, who made 125 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 1996, and Alec Stewart who cracked 100 versus West Indies at the same venue four years later. England lost both games.

11:32South Africa's Kyle Abbott, who took 1-28: "There was a bit there this morning. It was a touch slow, but we stuck to our guns and restricted them well. It was a tactic to bowl short and it worked - it got us a few dots and then wickets in the end. We didn't want to give them any width at all. We're confident and hopefully we can knock them off."

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special"236 may be enough for England to win if everything goes well. But, if you have seen it, this is one of the most brainless and stupid batting display you've ever seen. Alex Hales apart."

Fittingly, England's innings ends in tame fashion. Stuart Broad looks to heave Imran Tahir but can only find AB de Villiers at cover. Apart from the effort of Alex Hales, England have been disappointing. South Africa will need 237 to win the series.

Jay: If England make their batsmen spend 10 minutes with Mr Boycott after getting out to a bad shot, they'll soon rule world cricket.
Rob Meech: Well played, Alex Hales. Amid the madness, he remained calm and assured.

44 oversHales dropped to his haunches as soon as that catch was taken. There are some very glum faces on the England dressing room. Reece Topley, from the Courtney Walsh School of Number 11 batting, survives a lbw appeal from Rabada.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special"Start up the roller... Reece Topley's coming in. He can't bat.
"Alex Hales played very well but England's pulling and hooking has been poor. They don't seem to take into consideration that there's fielders out there. It's not enough just to hit it, it needs to be hit over the boundary.
"England need to think more about the game, rather than just playing the game and being instinctive."

You feel that England's chance of winning this series is over. It's the end of a brilliant knock from Alex Hales as he falls to a Kagiso Rabada short ball. Hales pulls, but straight to Rilee Rossouw at deep square leg. A number of South Africa players shake hands with Hales as he drags himself off. He's been let down by his team-mates today.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special"Just use all of your overs. If England bat them out, they'll get 270. That is a winnable total - it would have been the other night in Jo'bourg."

43 oversAlex Hales' 378 runs (and counting) is the most by an England batsman in a five-match series. He's trending on Twitter too. He continues playing a different game to the rest of his team-mates by sweeping Tahir for four. Just quietly, this stand has become worth 31.
