All that, though, is for tomorrow.

Australia also come to the party in the women's competition, with the three-time defending champions taking on a tricky South African side. Before that, Ireland face a very tough New Zealand outfit.

Australia make their bow in the men's tournament, taking on Tasman rivals New Zealand in a repeat of last year's World Cup final. After that, England must get it right against South Africa.

I'm not sure agree with you there, Jed. Afghanistan did just fine. If they hadn't run into a determined Dilshan, they could well have pulled off a result.

Jed Court: Disappointing performance from Afghanistan that, a big opportunity missed. Should be doing much better.

Afghanistan skipper Asghar Stanikzai: "We felt we were 10-15 short but Dilshan took the responsibility and played very well.

"We also missed a few in the field and made some big mistakes, we need to improve that.

"We thank our president and ministers for coming here to support us today."

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews: "It was a much-needed victory, we haven't played that well in the recent past. The bowlers bowled pretty well but credit should go to the Afghan batters.

"We played really good cricket in the practice games and we just had to be positive from the word go.

"We're not looking too far ahead, if we click we can do wonders as a team, but we're just taking one game at a time."

Matthew Vernon: Three times Afg misfields have turned singles into fours. Add nine runs to what SL need. A whole different ball game.

Don't forget that you can catch up with all the highlights from this match at the top of the page. I recommend the hitting of Asghar Stanikzai during the Afghanistan innings. Some meaty blows in there.

All that heaps quite a bit of pressure on to England tomorrow. West Indies and Sri Lanka have won one. If Eoin Morgan's men are beaten by the Proteas, qualification is starting to look very unlikely.

Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan: "I needed runs because I got two ducks in the warm-ups. I'm really happy with how I batted today.

"150 was a good total. It wasn't easy to hit the spinners, they got grip and turn. The dew was a factor later on. We still had to bat smart because they have quality bowlers.

"When you come to these tournaments, I always think the first match is important. Our senior guys have to stand up and do it for the team."

Sri Lanka could have wobbled at a couple of moments in this chase. First when Asghar Stanikzai led a blitz that bought 106 runs in the second half of the Afghan innings, then at 58-2 in the ninth over of the Sri Lanka chase. Dilshan, though, had his head in the fridge and his heart in the over. A masterclass in timing a chase.

Won with a four. A quite brilliant knock by Tillkaratne Dilshan, who fittingly finishes it by belting a full toss through square leg. 83 not out for the veteran, the sort of knock his team needed when faced with a tricky chase against dangerous opponents. Sri Lanka avoid a slip-up.

Almost there now. Dilshan takes Hamid Hassan through cover for four. Seven to win.
